Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/2/18
Despite being a Fifth Wednesday, this was actually a pretty big week in comics! The first full issue of Brian Michael Bendis’ Superman came out, and I enjoyed it! Granted, I’ve liked Superman comics in the past and dropped them, so who knows if I’ll stick with it — but I’m going to try!
Comic Book of the Week goes to another landmark issue: Amazing Spider-Man #800! It’s the grand finale of Dan Slott’s decade on Amazing Spider-Man, and the issue lives up to the pomp and circumstance…though it’s not without its flaws.
In potentially disappointing news, I’ve decided to give up on Doomsday Clock. I just don’t like the comic, and the new issue this week reinforced everything I don’t like. And I don’t want to use this comic review segment to trash on comics just because I don’t like them. I find Doomsday Clock to be boring, with an undeserved pretentiousness. I might keep reading, just to see where it goes. But starting now, no more active reviews.
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #800, Justice League: No Justice #4, Man of Steel #1 and Ms. Marvel #30.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/19/18
Anybody else see Deadpool 2 this weekend? That was a fun movie! Anybody want to take bets until Firefist shows up in comics? I’d say it’s about as inevitable as Negasonic Teenage Warhead getting the movie makeover after the last Deadpool movie…
Speaking of comics, we had some fine ones this week! Power Rangers continues their big Shattered Grid event. The final issue of All-New Wolverine drops a nice little finale. And the Avengers and Justice League face off to win my favor…and Comic Book of the Week goes to the second issue of Justice League: No Justice!
Meanwhile, I’ve decided to drop X-Men Red. It’s not what I thought it would be and, despite my being a big fan of writer Tom Taylor, I’m just not really digging it. I’d rather drop books I’m not enjoying than keep giving them crummy reviews. This week’s issue was fine, but just no what I’m looking for in an X-Men comic these days.
Also new this week, I’ve decided to start listing more creatives in the credits section of my reviews. A letterer friend of mine pointed out that reviewers should credit everybody, and he’s right. The only reason I wasn’t was because I’m lazy. So from now on, inkers, colorists and letterers!
Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #35, Avengers #2, Batman #47, Justice League: No Justice #2 and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #27.
There’s Gonna Be a New West Coast Avengers!
This is some great comic book news! Writer Kelly Thompson is going to write a new West Coast Avengers comic, starring Hawkeye, America Chavez, Gwenpool, Quentin Quire, Hawkeye, and that guy who was hurriedly revealed to have super-powers at the end of Thompson’s Hawkeye comic!
This has me really excited. Thompson is phenomenal on comics. I’ve loved both her Hawkeye and her Rogue & Gambit comics. So I think a team of awesome Thompson-esque characters trying to play at being the West Coast Avengers sounds like fun to me!
I definitely have to finish reading all the Gwenpool comics before this comes out.
Also, this may just be me, but I find it slightly silly that Johnny is part of the team. He’s a Thompson-created character, so she’s more than welcome to use him, but he was a little silly in the Hawkeye series. Basically, the comic got cancelled before Thompson really had a chance to play up the romance subplots she was working on. So in the last couple of issues, she not only quickly hooked up Kate and Johnny with, like, a single kiss. But she also introduced the idea that Johnny could turn into rocks or something. She was forced to rush through everything she wanted to do with Johnny in, like, the last issue. It was funny.
And now he’s back! So good for Thompson and Johnny!
The first issue comes out at the end of August!

The 6 Coolest Alternate Deadpools
Deadpool is a pretty darn popular character these days, what with a big movie sequel coming out at the end of the week. Me, being a finger-on-the-pulse kind of guy, I’ve decided to tie-in this week’s List of Six with the release of Deadpool 2! How about that?!
The problem is that I don’t actually read a lot of Deadpool comics. Or any Deadpool comics, honestly. I like the character just fine, but I don’t have a handful of favorite Deadpool moments or zingers out of which to make a list. Instead, I’ve decided to do a list of the best alternate Deadpools! There have been a bunch of alternate reality, alternate future, and replacement Deadpools throughout the years and it’s time they were bundled into one place! Or, at least, bundled into one place by me.
Join me after the jump for the best and wackiest alternate versions and parodies of Deadpool! And you should probably go see his movie this weekend, too. I know I’m going to! Get it? Because of Deadpool 2? Yeah, you get it.
