X-Statix is Coming Back!

Because true genius never dies, X-Statix are going to return for a special one-shot in July! Giant-Sized X-Statix #1 will reunite original creators Peter Milligan and Mike and Laura Allred! And some of the classic team members will be back too — even though most of them are dead!

XStatix Returns 02

There’s not too much information out just yet. Newsarama has an interview with Mike Allred, and they claim to have an interview with Milligan coming soon.

Bleeding Cool also revealed some sketch designs for potentially new characters.

XStatix Return 01

Those look pretty cool!

Whatever the case may be, I’m excited. I was a slow convert to X-Statix when they originally came out, but once I was in, I was really in and read through to the end. So I’m excited to see this revival, even if it’s short.

They’re back and more alive than ever for this special one-shot! But what new threat is so grave that only the most famous mutant celebrities can fight it? And who is the new U-Go-Girl? Only the original X-Statix creative team Peter Milligan, Michael Allred and Laura Allred know for sure!

I also hope we’ll finally see the return of long-lost character Lacuna, one of my favorite characters from X-Statix. She’s also one of the few to survive the end of the series, and I’ve been waiting forever to see if Marvel ever uses her again.

Of course, knowing my luck lately, she’ll probably come back and be killed immediately.

Forgotten Characters: Phantazia

Whatever happened to Phantazia?

There are a bajillion different mutants in the X-Men corner of comics, and I’m sure more than a few have been left by the wayside over the decades. But what about Phantazia? She looks cool and she was a female member of the Brotherhood of Mutants before it was cool!

Phantazia 01

Phantazia is one of those weird characters who pops up in a specific role, gets used in the background a couple of times and then disappears almost completely. But you can’t deny that she has a really cool look. Purple is a badass super-villain color.

So what became of that cool looking female member of the Brotherhood? Join me after the jump to find out!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/6/19

Like with most big superhero movie openings, I’m not usually reading the similar comics, so I can’t tell you how the latest Shazam comic is doing. But the Shazam! movie is great! So much fun! I’ll have a review up on Wednesday!

Comics were pretty OK this week, from Captain America to The Green Lantern. I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to the first issue of War of the Realms. It’s good, but not great, and the art is spectacular!

War of Wars 01

This army lacks discipline and leadership

Speaking of which, for the first time in a long time, I’m going to be reviewing a Marvel Big Event comic! They burned me out with Civil War II and I’ve been largely ignoring their crappy movie tie-ins since. But War of the Realms isn’t connected to any movies and is coming to us on the back of years’ worth of Jason Aaron-written Thor comics, which I have loved since the beginning. So I have high hopes!

Comic Reviews: Captain America #9, Champions #4, The Green Lantern #6, War of the Realms #1 and Young Justice #4.

The 6 Craziest Members of the Shazam! Family (the Shazamily!)

Shazam! comes out this weekend and I’m mildly excited. That’s a good enough reason to make a fun internet list, right? I’ve just never really cared about the Shazam character, I’m only mildly interested in all these DC superhero movies, and I still can’t buy Zachary Levi in the role. Hopefully all of that will change once I see the actual film!

Shazamily List 01

The box says “Cola”, so he didn’t even buy beer

And at least I can get a fun blog listicle about it. When Captain Marvel came out, I did a funny list of all the best Captain Marvels in comics. So how about a funny list of all the best Shazams in comics? Because Shazam is one of those characters with a big, weird comic book family. They were once known as the Marvel Family, but how has the phrase “Shazamily” not caught on?

The character very nearly predates World War II, and being around that long means there have been a lot of weird stories over the years. So let’s check out all of the craziest people who have been given Shazam powers over the decades! Or close to it!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/30/19

And so the slow march towards Avengers: Endgame reaches the home stretch. We’re less than a month away! Within the week, I’ll buy my ticket. And hopefully Shazam! will tide us over until the big show. Can’t wait!

Not much in the world of comics this week, at least not for me. But I got through some solid comics, like Mr. & Mrs. X and Fantastic Four. Comic Book of the Week goes to Action Comics for another corker of an issue. I’m finally really digging Bendis’ Superman.

Lois Waller 01

Lois Lane delivers the Amanda Waller smackdown I’ve waited years to see

Meanwhile, I read the second issue of the X-Tremists, the one Age of X-Man comic I’ve decided to follow. The issue is better than the first one thanks to the character work, but the overall premise of the alternate reality has already worn out its welcome for me. None of it holds together in any sort of meaningful way. At least Leah Williams is delivering some of the best Blob character development he’s ever received. It almost makes up for having all of my other favorite X-characters killed recently.

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1009, Fantastic Four #8, Heroes in Crisis #7 and Mr. & Mrs. X #9.
