Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/24/12

Holy mackerel, it’s a big week in comic books for me! I know I buy a lot of comics each week, but for some reason, a veritable ton of books were waiting for me in the comic shop. I’m lucky I managed to get through them all! I may have to start bleeding over some titles into the week after if I get anymore weeks like this. I’m only one man, after all. So what do we have in store for us this week? A nice smattering of DC and Marvel, with a few new Marvel NOW! starts, including The Indestructible Hulk, the title I was most looking forward to. Did it live up to the hype? Maybe. How about the big Amazing Spider-Man surprise? That definitely lived up to the hype.

But surprise, surprise, the Comic Book of the Week turned out to be Captain Marvel #7! I’m glad to see that title finally carrying its weight.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/17/12

AvX: Consequences has been cleaning up as the best comic of the week in all the initial Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews, but DC Comics isn’t about to give up just yet. They launched an onslaught of Batman titles this week (at least 2), playing into their revitalized Joker. Was I impressed? Maybe. Has it changed my opinion at all about the Joker? Well you’ll just have to read on to see. Suffice to say, Batman #14 earns the title of Comic Book of the Week! But don’t count Marvel out completely. They launch new X-Men and Thor comics, possibly for the better. And believe you me, the new Thor may be the best Marvel NOW! has to offer so far!

Yes, yes, we all fondly remember The Dark Knight Returns

Comic Reviews: All-New X-Men #1, Amazing Spider-Man #697, Batman #14, Batman and Robin #14, Thor: God of Thunder #1 and Wolverine and the X-Men #20.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/3/12

It’s a new week, there are new comics, and here we have the second installment of Hench-Sized Reviews! I’m kind of excited that I was able to keep to my schedule. I do have video games to play, after all. Plenty of good issues this week, at least in the comics I buy. I think the stand-out best of the bunch was AvX: Consequences #4. Cyclops is the best he’s been since Joss Whedon was writing him.

Well you are

Other reviews this week are Aquaman #13, Captain Marvel #6 and Wolverine and the X-Men #19. Join me after the jump!

Long Lost Concept Art from Wolverine and the X-Men Season 2

Wolverine and the X-Men was a cartoon cancelled before it’s time. It was a straight forward, geektastic take on the X-Men, reveling in its comic book roots while sticking Wolverine front and center. It was the kind of cartoon that featured cameos by obscure characters like Blink, Fishboy and Marrow, while still telling a great X-Men story with the likes of Wolverine, Cyclops and Magneto. It ran for only one season on Nickelodeon in 2009 before getting the ax – likely due to the fact that Disney was buying Marvel Comics.

Deadpool, the Merc with the Mouth

What makes the cancellation even worse is that season 1 ended on a great Age of Apocalypse cliffhanger! And this uncovered production art from the planned season 2 reveals that they were actually going to do a huge Age of Apocalypse storyline. That would have been sweet! Season 2 also would have involved Deadpool, Cable, Archangel, Pyro and more, based on these pictures!

More after the jump!

What the Heck is Happening to Toad?

I don’t know if anybody else has noticed – or even cares, frankly – but the X-Men character Toad has been quietly turning into a goblin.

Despite this picture, this is not an article about World of Warcraft

What’s up with that?

Alright, the answer is probably very obvious. I just don’t happen to like it. I’m a big fan of Toad, and all of his Brotherhood of Mutants cohorts. They’re probably my favorite villain team in all of comics. And I’ve absolutely loved Toad’s storyline over the past few years. That he’s now the janitor at the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning is the perfect place for Toad in the current X-Men status quo. I’m loving him in Jason Aaron’s Wolverine and the X-Men.

But why, oh why, does he have to go back to looking like a little goblin, ogre, thingy?

You heard me, Devil Kermit

I much prefer his more human-looking movie makeover. At least then I can take him seriously. And Toad deserves to be taken seriously. Join me for more after the jump. Though I should warn you, this is basically a silly little rant about an entirely aesthetic problem. But it’s my personal opinion on a matter, and that’s what my blog is for: ranting my personal opinion on comic book matters. Plus it gives me a chance to talk about Toad. How many other people on the Internet would ever bother to talk about Toad? Exactly.
