Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/19/14
I have a feeling that the closer we get to the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, the more prevalent the GotG cameos will be in Marvel comics. We’ve got at least two this week – that I read – and both are painfully obvious. It’s like Marvel is working overtime to erase all of the goodwill built up by all those amazing movie trailers.
I am going to be seeing Guardians of the Galaxy on opening night. But you better believe I’m not about to pay for one of their comics.
Fortunately, we’ve got a pretty good pile of books this week. New issues of Uncanny X-Men and She-Hulk were pretty darn great. If you’re a supporter of Cyclops, like me, things are going to get pretty awesome pretty fast. We also kick off the return of Robin at DC Comics, but for some reason, I’m pretty much subdued as far as that goes. And we’ve still got comics like Original Sin and Batwoman to stink up the joint. But we rebound with another (inter)stellar issue of Silver Surfer, which wins Comic Book of the Week for an adorable trip to Cape Cod.
But if I’m being completely honest, and more than a little shocked, Batman Eternal wins moment of the week for this hilarious bit. Batwing and the Spectre have just entered the haunted, overrun Arkham Asylum.
That is the smartest thing Batman Eternal has written so far.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/8/14
The new Marvel #1 issues keep pouring in! This week we’ve got Magneto, Moon Knight and the new relaunch of Wolverine and the X-Men. Personally, I have been super satisfied with the All-New Marvel NOW! campaign. It has produced some wonderful books – and some real stinkers. Fortunately, the releases this week are all mostly good.
I was very tempted to give Uncanny X-Men the gold star this week. I’ve ranted and raved before about how much I’m loving Cyclops these days, and the new issue is all about Cyclops! But then I got to thinking…we’re 18 issues into Uncanny X-Men, but has Brian Michael Bendis even gotten around to starting this ‘Mutant Revolution’ of his? The Uncanny X-Men have mostly just swirled around themselves this whole time, accomplishing little. And that kind of bummed me out. Fortunately, a new issue of She-Hulk came along to warm my heart and win Comic Book of the Week!
I hope there are some Patsy Walker fans in the audience!
Not only is Charles Soule going to be writing about legal logic, but he’s a master of drunk logic as well!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/15/14
Where is all the love? Valentine’s Day was only yesterday, yet none of this week’s comics were lovey dovey in the very least! Where was the pink? Or the hearts? Maybe Cupid has gone crazy and starts attacking Gotham City? Not even a Star Sapphire one-shot special? I feel very disappointed.
Heck, not even Superman/Wonder Woman was all that romantic, unless you count fighting super-villains to be date material…which I do. But love aside, we’ve got a smattering of good comics this week, including the future of Harper Row over in Batman, and the future of Toad in Wolverine and the X-Men. I was very tempted to celebrate all things Toad this week, but the new She-Hulk series files the proper motions to become Comic Book of the Week.
Not that Toad wasn’t awesome…and a little romantic.

New She-Hulk Comic To Fill Our Need of Superhero Lawyering
Marvel announced today a new She-Hulk comic to debut in February, and to once again focus on her legal career. Writer Charles Soule, one of comics’ up and comers, spoke with USA Today about the project. He’ll be teamed with artist Javier Pulido. I’m pleased to hear about this series. I like She-Hulk well enough, and I love the idea of another comic focusing on her misadventures in the legal profession.

As many of you may know, the last time She-Hulk had a series, it was written by Dan Slott, and it was all about She-Hulk working for a wacky law firm. I really enjoyed that comic, though I stopped reading towards the end. I enjoyed Slott’s humor and some of the artists. I don’t have enough experience with Soule’s work to know how he’ll do. Apparently he’s also a lawyer, like She-Hulk, so maybe his expertise will really up the quality of the stories. And Pulido was the fill-in artist for Hawkeye, so we know he’s got the chops to bring a realistic series like this to the page.
Says Soule in the interview:
“She-Hulk has always been a title where weird, cool things can happen. She is a strong — very strong — female character, and comics absolutely cannot have too many of those. That hypothetically means I get to do interesting things myself. Plus, she’s brainy, which always appeals to me, but she doesn’t always make the best decisions — and that’s a combination that’s ripe for drama.”
So it basically sounds like a run-of-the-mill She-Hulk series, which I’m all for. We’ll see how it goes!
