Next Generation Pokemon Games Announced!

The next generation of Pokemon games were unveiled today for the 3DS. That means I have until they’re released in October to buy a 3DS if I want to play. They’re going to be called Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, and it looks like the gameplay is getting a complete overhaul. Check it out!

That looks really cool. The battles look more like the 3D Pokemon Stadium. And the gameplay appears to be doing away with the traditional bird’s eye view role-playing style, replacing it with a closer, possibly more involved look. I have to say that I definitely approve of this new look. The animation looks rather blocky, akin to early Playstation graphics, but it might actually work for a Pokemon game. Just think of what it could do for environments. Rather than just walking around on a green background to denote grass or a white background to denote snow, this new game may actually look like we’re hunting pokemon in a deep forest or on an Arctic glacier. That would be pretty awesome.

Sadly, I don’t have a 3DS. I’d steal my brother’s, but apparently he’s big into pokemon as well. So if I want to play Pokmeon X and Y, I’m gonna have to shell out the big bucks for one of those things. I haven’t missed a new pokemon game yet. Heck, I even bought my DS just so that I could play Pokemon Pearl and Diamond. So I better start saving my pennies.

Check out those new starter pokemon.

Grass chipmunk, fire fox and water frog

We’ve got odd-looking grass chipmunk named Chespin, Vulpix-wannabe fire fox named Fennekin and old man-looking water frog named Froakie. None of them look particularly interesting to me so far, and I’ll probably wait until I see their evolutions before deciding which one I’d pick. But based on just their first stages…I’d pick Froakie. Having a frog starter would make me the Neville Longbottom of the pokemon world. And it’d be my first water starter since Totodile in Pokemon Silver. Should be fun!

What do you guys think? Which starter would you choose?

My 6 Favorite Video Game Characters

In honor of Wreck-It Ralph, this week’s blog list is all about my favorite video game characters! Though sadly, none of them appeared in the movie. Still, being the huge fan I am of fiction and storytelling, I actually pay a lot of attention to the stories and characters in video games. It’s not just all about mashing buttons for me. These are characters for whom I’ll go out of my way to play, or I’ll pick them all the time when it comes to gaming. Sometimes with annoying frequency.

None of these dinguses made the list

A lot of video games have a surprisingly deep mythology around them. Heck, even Angry Birds has the backstory of the pigs stealing the birds’ eggs – or something. And I often like to immerse myself in these stories. One of the biggest reasons I love World of Warcraft so much is because of the story and the lore. It helps that some of these games get cartoon shows, novels, comics or movies to help expand the story. Not that any of those things has particularly explained why King Koopa will kidnap Princess Peach in one game, and then race go-karts or play soccer with her in the next.

Mario even invites both of them to his frequent parties, as if that won’t make for an awkward evening. But questionable decisions by plumbers aside, here are my six favorite video game characters!

6 Improvements to Future Pokemon Games

I am a Pokemon video game fanatic. I can sing the theme song by heart. I can tell the difference between a Blitzle and a Basculin. I even bought my Nintendo DS on a whim simply because I’d heard that Pokemon Diamond/Pearl had come out and I no longer had a Game Boy to play it on. I wrote extensive Pokemon fan fiction in my youth. I am a 29-year-old male, and I do indeed plan to buy the new Pokemon Black/White 2 when it comes out this month. I absolutely love those games.

But man, oh man, Pokemon is in desperate need of a lot of improvements. Who knew such a powerful, long-lasting franchise was so broken?

No Bulbasaur or Charizard? Definitely broken

Join me after the jump for 6 improvements I want to see when the next generations of Pokemon games come out. This franchise shows no signs of slowing down, but it could use a lot of help along the way.

Zubatman: The Animated Series

That this exists is a testament to the power and majesty of the human spirit. I am speechless in its awesomeness.

A Zubat, of course, is a pokemon, in case you couldn’t tell. Brought to us by Terminal Montage, who deserves some kind of trophy for winning the Internet.

Geekapella is a Thing I Just Learned About

And now you know of them too!

Thanks to Topless Robot for the find. I love it when geeks do something geeky, seemingly for the sole purpose of showing off their geekitude on the Internet. That’s probably what I love most about the Internet. Even moreso than the oodles of pornography.
