Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/15/14

You know what I love on vacation? A big stack of great comics! And this week delivered with flying colors! The Internet loves the new issue of Batman, though I’m not as big of a fan. But who needs Batman when we’ve got She-Hulk, Thor and Captain Marvel? All three deliver solidly fun comics starring women, and that’s as much fun as it sounds. But what am I getting at, you ask? Where am I going with this?

Well, what happens when you mix Batman, flying colors and female protagonists?

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batgirl #36. It’s only the second issue of this new relaunch, and already I’m beyond loving this series. It’s just so, so good!

Also, feel free to check out my review of All-New Captain America #1 over at Word of the Nerd. I think Falcon is going to make a pretty good Cap.

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #36, Batman #36, Batman Eternal #32, Captain Marvel #9, She-Hulk #10, Superior Iron Man #1 and Thor #2.

6 Reasons Why I Think ‘Civil War’ is Perfect for the Marvel Movieverse

I liked Mark Millar’s Civil War. It wasn’t perfect, there were parts I didn’t like, and it left a bad taste in a lot of fandoms’ mouths, but overall, and especially in hindsight, I liked Civil War. I’m not ashamed to admit it, nor am I embarrassed to have read it. Civil War was a pretty insane comic book endeavor, but it’s also probably the best Marvel Big Event of the past decade.

So when Marvel Studios announced that Captain America 3 was going to be Captain America: Civil War, I was absolutely thrilled!

Captain America probably wasn’t too thrilled

I hope I’m not the only one. But reading around the web, I see a lot of people freaking out over the choice of Civil War. I understand that a lot of comic book fans apparently hated the story. By all means, everybody’s entitled to their opinions. But hating a comic book that came out nearly a decade ago and worrying that Marvel Studios is making a mistake are two very different things. I think Civil War is the perfect storyline going forward, and if you’ll join me after the jump, I’ll tell you why.

The Quieter Moments of Marvel

I mostly just love this video for the song – ‘Stay Alive’ by Jose Gonzalez. Someday I’ll have to share with you fine people how I mostly get my music from TV shows, movie trailers or commercials. There are so many songs on my playlist that came from the TV shows Scrubs and Chuck…At any rate, let’s give Gen Kim a hand for making this brilliant bit of fan love.

Do You Love the Marvel Movieverse? I Know I Do!

Marvel Studios, being generally awesome, has put together a massive, 5-minute-long trailer for all of their movies to date. I’m not sure why – other than synergy with Guardians of the Galaxy – but who doesn’t love a reminder that the Marvel movies have all been awesome? Did you hear that Guardians of the Galaxy had a $94 million opening weekend? That’s way above predictions! The film is a hit! Go Marvel!

Good times! Now go see Guardians of the Galaxy again!

Change. Change Never Changes. The Next Marvel NOW!

Guess what! Marvel Comics has a bunch of awesome plans in store for all of their most popular characters! And for a few of their upcoming movie stars! They’re setting up their third Marvel NOW! wave, and personally, I think it all looks pretty neat. Check out this lineup!

The Amazing Avengers? Invincible Avengers? Irredeemable Avengers?

If you haven’t heard yet, we’ve got female Thor and the fact that Sam Wilson, the Falcon, is taking over at Captain America. I’m a big fan of that idea. Cap with wings? Bring it on! The Winter Soldier is getting a new series, where he becomes the protector of Earth. Deathlok is getting a reboot to bring him closer to his TV counterpart. And Marvel is still trying desperately to make Inhuman happen. See that flaming guy in the picture there? That’s Inferno, the new Inhuman. He and Medusa are the stars of the comic Inhuman, which has published all of 2 issues so far. If Marvel is really serious about making the Inhumans a force to be reckoned with, they are failing terribly.

Seriously, Inhuman is terrible. Inferno should be ashamed to be in that group picture.

Also in that picture, you can see Ant-Man and Doctor Strange, both of whom have upcoming movies on the Marvel slate. I’m excited for both, and if Marvel can get both heroes their own comics, that would be a blast. Marvel is doing great things with comics these days. I’m dying for a quality Ant-Man comic.

Entertainment Weekly has some of the details.

Iron Man is getting a big change too. See his fancy new white/silver armor? That’s the Superior Iron Man!

Iron Man is suddenly big into testing

Tony Stark will be moving to San Francisco, where he plans to implement some darker, tougher technology upgrades. Tony’s going a little dark. Good for him.

I don’t know about you, but all of this looks great to me. Maybe I’m just really into Marvel these days. I know that’s the truth. They can do little wrong in my book. I have always been a Marvel man, and the various Marvel NOW! campaigns have been comic book gold. So you better believe I’m excited to get my hands on some of these new books.

This is going to be the year of the Ant-Man!
