Hench-Sized Comic Reviews – 4/5/25

Oh boy, what a week. This year has really been kicking me down, and I’m not even just talking about the wide world of crumbling society. It’s just been…that kind of week. Anyway, new comics keep coming out, and they main fun enough, like the start of Absolute Green Lantern.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Absolute Superman #6 for the absolute best issue so far in this already stellar series! It just keeps getting better!

Is this Heaven? No, it’s Iowa

Meanwhile, I’m still very much enjoying Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, as I always knew I would. Just taking my time living in this game. I watched the first season of Paradise on Hulu and found it merely OK, other than a few standout moments or episodes. And I’m currently really enjoying the first season of The Residence on Netflix, which is a murder mystery set at the White House. Highly recommended.

Comic Reviews: Absolute Green Lantern #1, Absolute Superman #6 and X-Men #14.

Our First Look at TV’s Green Lanterns

Yesterday, James Gunn shared our first look at Hal Jordan and John Stewart from the upcoming Lanterns TV show. And I think they look great! Kyle Chandler looks awesome as Hal, and Aaron Pierre is a wild kind of intense.

I am fully on board with this being a more grounded show. We saw what a CGI heavy Green Lantern was like on the big screen. So I’m fine with making a grounded, Earth-based detective show in which the main characters also wield these power rings, and occasionally go into space. There’s definitely a way to balance it all, and my faith in James Gunn remains unwavering, even though I know he’s not making Lanterns.

I like this look! And we better get a crossover with Guy Gardner at some point during the first season, is all I gotta say.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/15/25

Readers, you would not believe the month I’m having. Jeez louise. I’m only one man! But at least we’ve got good comics still coming out, like Absolute Batman and the new One World Under Doom.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Green Lantern Corps #1 for a nice return to form for the GL stories I enjoy. Give me all the space cops!

That’s some good Green Lanterning

Meanwhile, I’ve got to buy a new car. And I did not save up for having to buy a new car, even though I knew I needed to. So I’m buying this thing based on what savings I do have at the moment, so it’s not great! Which means I’ve got to make Dragon Age: Veilguard and Stardew Valley last a bit longer in terms of entertainment. Avowed and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II are going to have to wait!

Comic Reviews: Absolute Batman #5, Green Lantern Corps #1, One World Under Doom #1 and X-Men #11.

Our First Superman Trailer is Here!

The hype has been building all week and the trailer is finally here! Our first look at James Gunn’s Superman movie!

I dig it! I like almost all of the elements in this trailer and I am fully on board with this vision of Superman. I’m fully on board with everything James Gunn wants to do or would like to do. I don’t think he has ever led me astray. So bring it on!

I loved Krypto. I loved the look of Superman and pretty much all of the characters. I dig the tone. And we don’t know much of anything yet, so it definitely counts as just a teaser. We see a ton of stuff in this trailer and all of it looks good to me.

The only thing I don’t like is the reliance on the original Superman movie theme and any of that imagery. I know that everybody loves those original Christopher Reeves movies…but I don’t really care about them. And I don’t want every single new Superman adaptation to be beholden to them. I know that musical score is fantastic…but c’mon. This was a great chance to be wholly original. Ah well. I’m never going to win that argument.

Superman comes to theaters on July 11.

We Have Our TV Green Lanterns!

Rumors have been swirling for weeks now, and yesterday we got final confirmation that Kyle Chandler will play Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre will play John Stewart in the upcoming HBO show Lanterns. Solid casting!

I have very high hopes for this TV show. The Penguin has been awesome so far, largely because it’s a gritty crime drama that just happens to be about the Penguin. So I’m hoping we get a gritty cop drama that just happens to be about the Green Lantern Corps. Granted, it’ll hopefully be more colorful and cosmic than a gritty crime drama, but I have faith that they will make it work. And this is a good cast to make it happen!

And don’t forget Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner in the Superman movie!

We’ve got a good Corps on our hands. Here’s hoping we get even more characters, and even more of the rainbow corps!
