The New Darkwing Duck is Free on YouTube!
I’ve really enjoyed the new DuckTales reboot. It’s still humming along nicely after the past few years, and they’ve included more and more cameos from other Disney afternoon cartoons from my childhood.
Well they just did a double-sized special episode about their version of Darkwing Duck! And you can watch the whole thing on YouTube! So why not?
I’m still a little disappointed in how they arrived at their version of Darkwing Duck, but I can live with what’s happened. Especially since they have such fun with it. It’s a quality episode and I look forward to the rest of season 3.

My Disney Dream is Alive and Flourishing!
I am a big fan of the DuckTales revival cartoon. I am an especially big fan of the Expanded Disney Cartoon Universe the showrunners seem to be building. I was worried when they made Darkwing Duck a TV show instead of a superhero…but the most recent episode reversed course, introducing Drake Mallard and making him a real superhero inspired by the show.
Well guess what, folks: all my dreams are coming true! Announced at Comic-Con, there’s going to be a whole party bus full of characters joining the fun!
A lot of them appear on my list of characters I wanted to see on DuckTales.
Let’s run them down:
We’ve got Daisy Duck!
Goofy!
Chip & Dale’s Rescue Rangers!
TaleSpin is confirmed there in the upper right corner. Only we’re getting Kit Cloudkicker and Molly Cunningham as older characters than their young selves from the original. That could be neat.
Darkwing Duck is coming back, and alongside him is a new Gosalyn!
Bubba the Caveduck!
Gene the Genie!
And it’s hard to make out in the upper right, but to the left of Bubba is a more realistic looking Butterbear the Wuzzle! The Wuzzles are coming!
So yeah, essentially everything I want from the DuckTales cartoon is coming true. Check out Entertainment Weekly for some close-up shots of some of the characters. And this Reddit thread for even more.
You can also check out this nifty trailer, though not all the characters are featured.
This is turning out to be a very fun Comic-Con for me and all my geeky hopes and dreams!

Those Maniacs! They Blew it Up! My Disney Animated Dream is Dead!
My dream of an Expanded Disney Cartoon Universe is dead. Probably.
I had such high hopes. And it made so much sense in my mind. The dream was a crystal clear vision of a bunch of interlocking Disney cartoon shows from my youth, a vast tapestry of fan favorite characters and shows intermingling in the new DuckTales to all our glorious benefit.
In today’s age of epic cartoon mythologies and reveals, I thought for sure the creative minds behind DuckTales were really going to do what they were teasing.
But no. They’re not. The Expanded Disney Cartoon Universe is dead before it even began.
They have squandered Darkwing Dark. And I’m sure that’s only the beginning.
That is a screenshot from last Friday’s new episode of DuckTales. Darkwing had been promised for the show and anticipation was high. Friday’s episode was the promised introduction of Gizmoduck, a personal favorite, and the episode was fine (not really, I didn’t care for it). But nobody expected the episode to kick-off with an extended sequence of Darkwing Duck taking on some of his classic foes, Crackerjack, Megavolt and Liquidator!
Join me after the jump for why the arrival of Darkwing Duck in the new DuckTales cartoon has killed the dream.
The World is Ready for an Expanded Disney Cartoon Universe
The new DuckTales reboot cartoon is all the rage. Woo-hoo! I was a huge fan as a kid, and I watched the first episode of the new reboot and quite enjoyed it. The show is fun all on its own, but it’s also clearly made with the sensibilities of a modern cartoon show. There are Easter Eggs galore and a real effort has clearly been made to create a larger, deeper mythology. All the good cartoons these days have a deep mythology.
If you haven’t seen the opening pair of episodes yet, you can check them out right now! Trust me, it’s a good show.
Now that we’re all on the same level, I hope you caught all the great Easter Eggs the first few episodes dropped. I won’t spoil them until after the jump, but I think this new series has the makings to launch a larger Disney Expanded Universe, and I’m all in favor of that!
Join me after the jump to see what I mean!
