6 Thoughts on Shazam! Fury of the Gods

If you haven’t seen the news yet, Shazam! Fury of the Gods has bombed at the box office. That’s a shame. I am not someone who heralds the death of superhero movies at the theaters. I want all of these movies to be successful, to turn into popular franchises. But I’m not heartbroken. The DCEU itself is broken, and it’s not a surprise that audiences don’t care anymore. The only real question is whether or not they will care when James Gunn reboots everything in a couple of years.

Movie Rating: 6/10 – Pretty Good

I really enjoyed the first Shazam! I thought it was funny, charming and full of entertaining energy. All the good things about fun superhero movies. I liked the Shazamily, which was something unique to this franchise. And now this sequel comes along with pretty much everybody coming back. Should have been another success! But something went wrong somewhere along the way. Was it a bad script? Were there some behind-the-scenes changes that screwed things over? I don’t know. All I know is that, while they made a fairly entertaining new movie, it’s ultimately going to be a flop.

6 Thoughts on Black Adam (Review)

The hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has never been more in flux. At long last, the Black Adam movie is upon us. We’ve been waiting for this film ever since Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was first cast in the role in 2007. We’ve been waiting for this film since the DCEU sorta fell apart after Justice League. Is Black Adam the savior that this cinematic universe has been waiting for?

Probably not, but it was an alright flick.

Movie Rating: 7/10 – Good

I’ll admit that I probably went into Black Adam a little biased. Not against the character or DC, because I’m a comic book fan who loves all this stuff. But The Rock’s constant hyping of this movie, coupled with DCEU fanboys desperate for a hit, really started rubbing me the wrong way. This isn’t the second coming of superhero movies, and I doubt it’s going to really change the shape of DC movies going forward. I think it was just an enjoyable superhero film.

Now Black Adam Looks Good

A new trailer for the Black Adam movie arrived on the internet yesterday and this one actually looks good. I haven’t been all that interested in Black Adam and all previous trailers have been pretty lackluster. It just looks like the Rock is going to embrace every available cliche to bring this largely uninteresting character to life.

But this new trailer looks pretty darn cool!

I’m definitely not the only person more excited to see the Justice Society in action. I’m not a Justice Society fan, but there appears to be a lot of care and detail put into bringing the likes of Hawkman and Dr. Fate to life. That’s cool as heck. And Black Adam…still looks and acts like a cliche-ridden Rock.

I guess we’ll find out! Black Adam comes to theaters on Oct. 21.

Into the Shazamiverse!

The Comic Con trailers are coming hard and fast today! I’ll share as many as I feel like over the next couple of days. I don’t care about every trailer, people! It’s my weekend! Anyway, I definitely wanted to share the new trailers for Shazam: Fury of the Gods and Black Adam. One looks good, the other looks as boring as it’s every been.

I really enjoyed the first Shazam movie and this sequel looks like fun. It also looks a little directionless. Like, why isn’t it a crossover with Black Adam? Is it just going to be another Shazam adventure? Also, how the hell are these two movies not some kind of crossover? Fans enjoy crossovers, and these two characters are from the same gorram series! Why is Warner Bros not going for full movie synergy with these two films?

Anyway, Shazam: Fury of the Gods looks fun. I especially hope to see a lot of attention paid to the family. This movie comes out at Christmastime.

Then we’ve got Black Adam, which comes out in late October. And this second trailer is just as useless as the first.

I’m just not buying what this movie is selling, and all it’s selling is the Rock. There don’t seem to be any really interesting twists or gimmicks to Black Adam. He’s just a generic superhero type, and they’re trying to play him off as some sort of uber badass or something. It feels forced and hokey. And the Rock isn’t selling it. His line about the “hierarchy of power” changing in the DC Universe was an instant meme of mockery, and nothing this movie has shown us since has changed that for me.

This one is gonna be a Morbius-level dud.

Black Adam Looks Bad

The first full trailer for the upcoming Black Adam movie came out yesterday and it looks bad. It looks Morbius levels of bad, in my opinion. It’s just the Rock doing a bunch of posing as the trailer checkmarks its way through superhero movie tropes.

They even recreate the Iron Man vs. jet fighters scene from the very first Iron Man trailer more than a decade ago! I mean, c’mon! The action looks rote and the Black Adam character looks boring as hell. The only interesting stuff in this trailer is the Justice Society.

Black Adam seems to be built purely on the Rock’s force of will to be a super strong superhero. It’s like some studio executive told the Rock he could never play Superman because he’s too brown, so the Rock found a brown superhero as strong as Superman and is going to try to make him even more popular — only to not have anybody actually try behind the scenes.

This does not look good. But I’m still gonna see it, of course. Black Adam comes to theaters on Oct. 21.
