Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/22/17
Lots of fun comics this week! Marvel kicks off Secret Empire, which I won’t be reviewing. And DC kicks off their next big Watchmen event in Batman, which I’ve decided to get back into reviewing. In fact, we’ve mostly got DC comics this week! A reversal of the norm!
Unfortunately for DC, the one Marvel comic I reviewed — Ms. Marvel #17 — wins Comic Book of the Week for some really fun bits! Like a day-saving video game session in the middle of a convenience store!
Meanwhile, the opening salvo of Secret Empire came out this week, and while I don’t really review Big Events anymore, I’m digging it so far! I absolutely love the set-up and premise behind this event. Captain America has been brainwashed into being a secret bad guy, and he’s using his clout and heroism to build up a secret army to take over the world! And the rest of the heroes are going to need to band together against impossible odds to defeat and save their greatest champion.
That’s just good crossover storytelling! I liked all the issues that kicked off the event, I love the evil knife twists that Captain America pulls off, and I hope for an exciting ride.
Comic Reviews: Batman #21, Batwoman #2, Harley Quinn #18, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #14, Ms. Marvel #17 and The Wild Storm #3.
Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/18/17
It’s Iron Fist weekend! Unfortunately, I don’t think Marvel released their new Iron Fist comic yet, so I don’t get that special sort of synergy. But while you’re reading these reviews, you best believe I’m binging some quality Netflix Defenders.
Fortunately, this week had some spectacular comics regardless, with new issues of Ms. Marvel, Harley Quinn, Hellcat and The Wild Storm! I also tried out the first issue of the new Batwoman series, and I’m considering getting back into Amazing Spider-Man!
Comic Book of the Week goes to the latest issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, which is telling some pretty stellar stories! Let us hope that next week’s movie can live up to the quality of the comic.
Meanwhile, I’ve been catching up on Tom King’s Batman, and it seems like I gave up on that series too soon. After the opening story, which I just didn’t like, King has been doing some amazing work with Bane, Catwoman, the Ventriloquist and more! I might have to add that back to my review pile.
Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #25, Batwoman #1, Harley Quinn #16, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #13, Ms. Marvel #16, Patsy Walker a.k.a. Hellcat #16 and The Wild Storm #2.
Batwoman is Getting an Ongoing Series Again!
I’m a big Batwoman fan, and I’m excited to hear she’s going to get a new ongoing series again! It’s due to be announced today at New York Comic-Con! My friend and co-creator Kristi is a huge Batwoman fan, and I hope she hears the news while she’s at NYCC (I’ll be there tomorrow!)
The new series will be written by Marguerite Bennett, who is doing great work on DC Bombshells, with art by Steve Epting. It’s going to spin out of Batwoman’s role in Detective Comics.
So yeah, this is pretty awesome news. I’d love a new, well-written Batwoman comic.
“There has never been a heroine I have loved more than Batwoman,” said Bennett in a statement. “Her flaws, her ferocity, her struggle to rise above her own history and find a way to serve the greater good and those she loves—she’s always cut me straight to the bone. To be a queer woman and to see a queer woman as not just a part but a pillar of the Bat-family was life changing, inspiring and gave me the courage to pursue this career in comics. The opportunity to add to Kate Kane’s story and legacy is both an honor and a sincere dream come true.”
But we have to wait until February! Oh well.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/13/16
Hooray for Comic-Con! When you read this review list, I’ll already be on my way to Boston Comic-Con to promote my own self-published comic, Gamer Girl & Vixen! We have issues to hand out and hands to shake, so it should be a great trip! And a great culmination of my week’s vacation. I’ll see some good friends, hopefully make some new fans, and basically have a good, enjoyable time. That’s what vacation is all about.
Though vacation may have also made me a little lazy. I read a couple comics this week, but none of them really wowed me. I don’t know if the comics just weren’t very good this week, or if I’m in some kind of special lazy zone. But even the likes of the Lumberjanes, Gotham Academy, Amazing Spider-Man, Wonder Woman and the all new All-Star Batman didn’t get me very excited. Fortunately, this week saw the debut of Superwoman, and it’s really good!
Though it was also nice to see Tim Drake kicking butt again in Detective Comics! DC is really hitting it out of the park lately.
Comic Reviews: All-Star Batman #1, Amazing Spider-man #16, Detective Comics #938, Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #3, Superwoman #1 and Wonder Woman #4.
