Overdoing It: 6 Surprise Villain Reveals in Recent Disney Movies

Disney Villains are nearly as iconic as Disney Princesses, and way more notable and memorable than Disney Heroes. Disney Villains are an institution unto themselves, with their own brands of clothing, TV shows and even Disney Channel movies. And why not? Ursula, Captain Hook, Judge Frollo, Hades, Maleficent; these are legendary characters who have earned their place in pop culture.

But I’ve noticed something kind of weird in recent Disney movies…they don’t really have major, iconic villains anymore. Instead, Disney keeps trying to surprise us with a villain twist.

Villain Twist List 01

Lulling you into a false sense of security

Obviously this isn’t a trait of Disney movies alone. Lots of films have surprise villains. But looking back at some recent films, almost every major Disney animated feature film from the 2010s has featured a surprise villain twist. Where a character we thought was a good guy is later revealed to be the villain. That’s weird, right? Like, do they not realize that they’re all doing it? Maybe if they were more spread out, it wouldn’t be as weird. But, with the exception of one of the earliest examples back in the late 90s, most Disney animated films in the past five years have featured a surprise villain twist.

I really think this is a weird trend and I hope they stop soon. SPOILERS for a bunch of recent Disney/Pixar movies.

Luke Cage Fights Snakes!

Today, seemingly at random, we got a new trailer for the second season of Luke Cage! We get a full look at the new villain and the possible story, with plenty of style. Can the second season make up for the horrible second half of the first season?

We’ll find out on June 22!

Honestly, I’m a little worried. I haven’t loved a Netflix Defenders show since the first half of Luke Cage‘s first season. Everything else has been…bad to lackluster to merely OK. But I will probably never lose hope that they’ll turn things around.

Making Fun of Those Chevy Commercials is Never Not Funny

I see a lot of movies thanks to MoviePass. But do you know the worst part of seeing so many movies? Seeing the same boring trailers over and over again. I’ve seen the Mission Impossible: Fallout trailer so many times that it’s painful to watch again.

My local theater also plays one of those really annoying Chevy car commercials before every movie. You know the commercials. Thankfully, we’ve got the fine folks at Zebra Corner to mock t he hell out of them!

I was waiting for them to parody that family commercial and Mahk and the gang did a great job! Hooray Internet comedy!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/5/18

A new age of comics is upon us! The Avengers is getting a more back-to-basics relaunch this week, and it ain’t half bad. And Justice League is do for a crazy wild relaunch in a couple weeks. That should also be fun.

Honestly, I think The Avengers #1 is Comic Book of the Week. It’s a pretty momentous issue, finally re-uniting Captain America, Iron Man and Thor at the core of the team. That’s pretty neat. And, like I said, Jason Aaron does a solid, exciting job.

Meanwhile, the Rogue & Gambit mini-series came to an end and it was delightful! I want Kelly Thompson on more X-Men stuff! Any fan of the two characters, especially as a couple, need to read that comic!

Comic Reviews: The Avengers #1, Batman #46 and Go Go Power Rangers #9.

If You’ve Got Ron Howard, Use Him

Ron Howard was brought in to re-direct Solo: A Star Wars Story. So somebody at Star Wars decided to put him to good use with a nifty Arrested Development parody.

That’s good stuff. Easily my favorite trailer for Solo yet!
