Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/24/22
Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be well on the road in freezing temperatures to meet my family for Christmas. Should be a blast! Meanwhile, you’re hopefully all warm and tucked in at home, reading a couple of my comic book reviews. Not many this week because I got lazy.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103 for another exciting, character-driven issue of this new era.
Meanwhile, I’ve started watching the new Willow TV show on Disney+ and it’s pretty fun. Nothing too crazy good, but it’s nicely enjoyable. I’m still playing Pokemon Violet, but extremely slowly. I just haven’t found the time in what feels like weeks to just sit down and play for a few hours. It’s a bit of a shame. Also, tune into this next week’s List of Six on Wednesday to see my favorites list from 2022! Did Pokemon make the list? Maybe!
Comic Reviews: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103 and Nightwing #99.

The day has finally come, decades in the making. The X-Men have finally addressed the supervillain Whirlwind. I know what you’re thinking: why does that matter? Whirlwind is an Avengers villain. What does he have to do with the X-Men?
Nothing. Except…Whirlwind is a mutant!
It’s one of those weird little bits of comic book trivia that I enjoy. Whirlwind, a classic Avengers, Ant-Man and Wasp villain, who has been around since 1963, is a mutant. But he’s a mutant who has never, ever been involved in any X-Men comics. I’m pretty sure Whirlwind has never fought the X-Men, never duked it out with Wolverine, never had anything to do with Magneto or the Brotherhood of Mutants.
Until this week! Whirlwind was the villain in this week’s X-Men Annual comic, where he gets into a fight with Firestar and Cyclops. And after they kick his butt, they bring up the fact that Whirlwind chose not to move to Krakoa.
It’s neat! They even gave him a whole informational page, which laid out everything I just said, but in a more all-encompassing way.
I have really been enjoying the X-Men comic in the Krakoa era. It’s my favorite title of the lot. And I especially love it when the X-Writers get to explore some other characters in the wider universe, through these Annual or Unlimited issues. Writer Steve Foxe took the time to explore this nifty little corner of the Marvel Universe and now we can finally say for sure that Whirlwind wanted nothing to do with Krakoa.
Considering the nature of comics, he’ll probably be proven right in the long run…

6 Characters Henry Cavill Could Play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
The news came out last week that Henry Cavill will not return as Superman on the big screen after all. Despite being told by the studio he would. Despite being shoehorned into the post-credits scene in Black Adam. Cavill’s time as the Man of Steel is at an end. To that I say, good. Cavill was fine as Superman, but I am 110% in favor of putting an end to the DCEU and letting James Gunn take over completely.
With the Superman gig gone, and after dropping out of The Witcher, Henry Cavill is a free agent. He’s a pretty popular actor, and I’m sure he could be put to good use within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are plenty of superheroes who have yet to make their MCU debut, and there are plenty of those that Cavill could play. I’m not talking about Hyperion or Sentry, the obvious Superman knock-offs. Why are people pigeon-holing Cavill into those roles? The Marvel Universe is vast and exciting, and Cavill could be just about anyone.
Join me after the jump for six Marvel superhero roles that Henry Cavill could play in a future MCU project. And feel free to share your own suggestions in the comments below.

Christopher Nolan’s next big movie is Oppenheimer, an historical picture about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the guy who invented the atomic bomb. That’s some pretty heady material, but it can also be some pretty impressive material. This first trailer definitely looks like it wants to be super impressive.
This really counts as more of a teaser trailer, setting up the mood. I would like to see some story elements, get a taste of what this movie will actually be about. But then I suppose I could just wait for Oppenheimer to come to theaters on July 21!

I Don’t Know Fashion, But I Do Know Doctor Who
I am way behind on Doctor Who. I haven’t seen the last season and any of the specials that came after, so I haven’t even seen Jodie Whittaker’s regeneration yet! Ideally, I’ll be able to catch up when it’s all on Disney+ in a year or two. That being said, I still get Doctor Who news in my various feeds, and they revealed 15th Doctor Ncuti Gatwa’s official outfit last week.
I do not understand fashion. It looks fine. I guess it looks like a Doctor outfit. But fuzzy orange jumper underneath that brown checkered suit? I just don’t get fashion. But then I’ve been wearing the same cargo pants/button up look since high school. So by all means, I am really bad at this.
But Gatwa looks fine, as does his sidekick, Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. Here’s hoping for some quality Doctor Who again!
