Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/16/23

It’s a week for new or relatively new comics! And that’s always fun. Astonishing Iceman attempts to win our hearts with a second issue, while DC tries to win me over with a Batman and Robin focused team book.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Avengers Inc. #1 for absolutely nailing the tone and premise its going for in its first issue.

The Great Wasp Detective

Meanwhile, still playing Baldur’s Gate 3, because I’m a slave to that game. I’ll beat it one of these days! Other than that, I really enjoyed the latest issues of Ahsoka, so that’s a quality show. And Star Trek: Lower Decks has started up again, so I’m happy with that. Lots of good content to devour these days, and even more to come in the near future.

Comic Reviews: Astonishing Iceman #2, Avengers Inc. #1 and Batman and Robin #1.

Aquaman and Kite-Man, Hell Yeah!

A pair of trailers for some really fun DC projects dropped yesterday and both were pretty cool. We got the first trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and it looks pretty insane. I’m not sure if it looks like a great film, or if it looks like the slapdash movie we all fear it’s going to be.

This trailer is a lot. There’s so much going on, and a bunch of it seems like an odd choice. I know it’s a classic trope to have the villain of the first film come back as a pal in the second, but are Arthur and Orm really going to be that key of a buddy pair? Was their relationship really that powerful in the first film that we want to see them team up? At least Jason Momoa looks like he’s having fun. And Black Manta looks cool as heck.

My only nitpick is that, while the trailer does reference the seven kingdoms, I didn’t catch any specific mention or tease of this titular lost kingdom. Shouldn’t that be a bigger plot point?

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom comes to theaters on Dec. 20.

Meanwhile, on the little screen, we’ve got the first trailer for Kite-Man, Hell Yeah!, the spin-off from the excellent Harley Quinn cartoon. This looks like a ton of fun.

I really love the Harley Quinn cartoon, even if I’m many episodes behind on its new fourth season. Kite-Man has been a super fun character, and I am very much looking forward to this show. It should be a hoot and a half.

Kite-Man, Hell Yeah! comes to Max sometime next year.

Mortal Kombat 1 is Here!

The latest in the Mortal Kombat series has arrived on all our video game consoles and it looks to be a fun one. All of these games are usually super fun to play. And as a guy who’s really into the story and lore of Mortal Kombat, this one looks especially cool with its universe reset and reshaping.

We’ve got one final launch trailer to share, introducing a couple of the less interesting playable characters.

Reiko and Nitara. Neat. Anyway, this all looks great. I probably won’t play the game for a while. I’m still deep into Baldur’s Gate 3 and so I’m not about to buy a $60 game just for kicks. I’ll wait for a sale, and maybe scoop up all the DLC at once. We’ll see. I’m most interested in Smoke’s new storyline, so hopefully that won’t be spoiled anywhere along the way.

6 Things I Want to See in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

I loved the first Aquaman movie. I loved Jason Momoa in the lead role. I loved how it built to an insane ending, where Aquaman and Orm are in comics accurate costumes fighting in the middle of a giant undersea war. It was a crazy movie, and it earned that billion dollars. So I’m mildly excited for the upcoming sequel: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

His trident has three prongs now!

Granted, there are a lot of bad signs about this film. I don’t think DC necessarily makes bad movies now. I really enjoyed Blue Beetle and mostly enjoyed The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. So I have high hopes at at least enjoying Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It comes out at the end of December, just ahead of Christmas. And we’re supposed to get the first trailer tomorrow. So I’m in the mood to talk some Aquaman movies!

Join me after the jump for what I’d like to see in this upcoming Aquaman sequel. And feel free to share your own hopes and fears in the comments below!

Buncha Godzilla Stuff Incoming

Godzilla is great. I’ve been loving Godzilla since I was a little kid, so who doesn’t love new Godzilla movies? We’ve got a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel on its way to the big screen, but this post is not about that movie. Instead, we’ve got a trailer for Godzilla: Minus One, made by Toho in Japan!

Damn, that looks cool. I need to watch those modern Toho Godzilla movies. They have given the big guy a great design and this movie looks like so much fun! I love the parts where we get up-close scenes of Godzilla’s feet walking among and upon the people. It’s funny and terrifying.

Godzilla: Minus One is coming to Japan on Dec. 1!

Meanwhile, coming to the rest of the world is a Monarch TV show. Based on the SHIELD-esque agency that monitors giant monsters, Monarch looks like it’s going to be to monster movies what The Walking Dead is to zombie movies: a show about the people living and surviving in the classic movie genre. And they seem to be putting a lot of money into using movie Godzilla to his full effect.

A TV show with movie-quality Godzilla stomping around? Heck yeah! Sounds like fun. What will the actual episodes be about? I don’t know. Will Godzilla feature in every episode? Probably not. Will we finally get Anguirus, my favorite monster? I sure hope so!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is coming to AppleTV+ on Nov. 17.
