Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/9/16

Welp, I don’t know what happened, but it seems I only read Marvel comics this week. I readily admit that they’re my favorite publisher, and have been since childhood, but I’m not actively trying to favor them. DC, Image and all the rest all have good books, I swear. But hey, Marvel does rule!

We’ve got new issues of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Iron Man and more, and they’re all pretty darn good. I even tried out the new Uncanny X-Men. But Comic Book of the Week has to go to Spider-Woman #2 for its humor, its quality and the way writer Dennis Hopeless is fully incorporating the character’s pregnancy.

Baby knows best

That’s some real dedication to a story.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #6, Doctor Strange #4, Invincible Iron Man #5, Spider-Woman #2, Totally Awesome Hulk #2 and Uncanny X-men #1.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/2/16

Speaking of dropping the ball…turns out I was too busy partying and playing video games to read too many comics in the new year. I had some vague plans about getting caught up on Black Canary or Batman and Robin Eternal so that this week’s reviews would pack a little bit of a punch, at least. But I’m apparently going to start 2016 with a whimper! Woot! I did manage to read and review the newest issue of All-New Wolverine, though, so I think that wins Comic Book of the Week by default!

Just Wolverine stuff

It’s OK, though. There weren’t many comics out this week anyway. Don’t worry, starting next week, the world goes back to normal.

Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #3.

Deadpool Has a New Trailer!

On Christmas Day, when most of the world was off doing non-Deadpool stuff, the new Deadpool movie dropped a new NSFW trailer. Sorry for taking so long to share it, it’s actually pretty darn good.

Funny, witty, comical, action-packed, filled with mutant cameos; this Deadpool movie might actually be really good. But now we have to wait all the way until Feb. 12 to see it!

X-Men: Apocalypse Trailer Does Its Thing

Apparently, this is the week for movie trailers — possibly making sure all the big trailers get out and go ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That thing is apparently attracting movie trailers like a moth to flame.

Anyway, here is the first trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and, well…I dunno. I wasn’t impressed.

I enjoyed Days of Future Past just fine, but it was hardly a break out movie for me. I think the X-Men franchise has just been around for so long that they kind of just put out perfectly acceptable and enjoyable films now. There’s nothing really new they’re going to show us. And there isn’t anything particularly interesting about their Apocalypse, at least not in this trailer. He doesn’t sound very menacing, and how many times have we seen that same trope of a new, ancient villain revealing themselves to have been Jesus, Buddha and the rest?

The Four Horsemen mostly came off as silly, like the movie had to make a point to acknowledge them. They’re all mutants we’ve seen before. Mystique seems to be stuck in Jennifer Lawrence mode, because of course.

Plus, this might just be me, but I don’t particularly buy Sophie Turner as an actor. That’s probably on me.

So there we have it, folks. This week, I liked the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer more than I liked the new X-Men trailer. Glob help me.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/5/15

For some reason, this is a super heavy Marvel week for me. I read a bunch of DC Comics, but this week I pointed my review cannon squarely at what Marvel had to offer — though I was sure not to miss the first issue of Robin War. Gotta represent the ‘R’!

As for Marvel, we’ve got a ton of good comics! New Angela, Iron Man and Avengers issues, as well as the debut of Totally Awesome Hulk, which I enjoyed. I’ve also finally reviewed an X-Men comic in this new All-New, All-Different world.

But Comic Book of the Week goes to Doctor Strange #3, a delightfully weird comic that lets Jason Aaron stretch his insane muscles!

I know a lot of people who would be dying for Cumberbatch to do this scene

It’s got the focus of his Thor and the madcap zaniness of his Wolverine and the X-Men.

And remember, now is your chance to buy the first two issues of my own comic, Gamer Girl & Vixen! Stop by our store and check us out!

Comic Reviews: All-New, All-Different Avengers #2, All-New X-Men #1, Angela: Queen of Hel #2, Doctor Strange #3, Invincible Iron Man #4, Robin War #1 and Totally Awesome Hulk #1.
