My 6 Favorite Things of 2018

It’s that time of year again! My annual roundup of the pop culture I enjoyed, just like every other website and blog worth its salt. But unlike those fancy pants websites with their paid writers and access to advanced screenings, I’m just a schlub typing away at his computer, enjoying what sweet little things come my way!

2018 List 01

Thank god it’s almost over

2018 has been an OK year, I guess. I don’t have any major accomplishments to brag about. I’m still working on making my own comics, with more Gamer Girl & Vixen news to come in the new year. I haven’t lost any weight, but I remain confident that maybe I will someday. And I’m not dead yet! That always counts for something.

The following list is just my favorite, most memorable shows, movies, toys and whatnot I encountered in 2018. Some things, like movies, were released on 2018. Other things, like TV shows and comics, are often ongoing and extend beyond just 2018, but they were my favorites in 2018. It’s not that complicated. And, as always, I am wholly out of touch with new music, so that’s not a category.

Feel free to share your own favorite things from the past year in the comments!

The 6 Most Wicked Snowmen in Pop Culture

Christmas is right around the corner. Hanukkah has already come and gone. The holidays are in full swing and, most importantly for today, winter weather is being a real bitch! So how about we talk about snowmen?

Snowman Evil List 01

Don’t trust him, kids!

Every winter season, I like to do a holiday-themed List of Six that celebrates some portion of this joyful time of year. And I’ve really stretched that idea from time to time. I’ve done elves, reindeer, Jesus, Christmas lights, and the abominable snowman, to name a few. I don’t know what I’m going to do next year, but this year I’ve cobbled together a pretty fun list of the most evil and wicked snowmen in pop culture! I probably could have done good snowmen, but where’s the fun in that?

Have You Seen The Outer Worlds?

A new game from the makers of Fallout: New Vegas was revealed at some video game awards last weeks. It’s called The Outer Worlds, and it looks amazing!

The Outer Worlds looks to be based around the Fallout: New Vegas system. There’s actually a pretty funny story behind this, if I recall correctly. Basically, the makers of the original Fallout games, with their irreverent wit, eventually got fired from the company they worked for and went on to regroup and form Obsidian Entertainment, while the rights to the Fallout games were sold to Bethesda.

Bethesda has made some good Fallout games (Fallout 3 and Fallout 4), but they’re right in the middle of a big stinker that is Fallout 76. I don’t know, because I haven’t played it yet, because of all the negative response.

But the true gem of the modern Fallout games was Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda hired Obsidian to make New Vegas, which is what sets it apart from Fallouts 3 and 4. I played New Vegas through completely at least three times. I loved that game! But then Bethesda didn’t bring Obsidian back to make Fallout 4 or Fallout 76.

So rather than rest on their laurels, it seems the fine folks at Obsidian have just made their own Fallout game, without Fallout! It’s got the same sense of humor, the same first-person style, the same dialogue choices, the same feel. The Outer Worlds looks great! Can’t wait to play it!

And the World Went Just a Little Bit More Mad With a Detective Pikachu Trailer

When I first heard they were making a movie called “Detective Pikachu”, I giggled at the Internet’s campaign to make Danny DeVito do the voice. That would have been hilarious.

Now that we have an actual first trailer, my mind is boggled for reasons I never expected.

A live action Pokemon movie?! With creepily realistically animated pokemon?! Like, the Pokemon universe created in live action? And the story they go with is Pikachu as some kind of snarky private investigator?! It’s madness!

Clearly we were always meant to take Detective Pikachu seriously.

6 Genres for Rockstar to Develop Next

Look, I’m going to level with you fine readers. I’ve spent the past week hip deep in Red Dead Redemption 2, gleefully shootin’ and hollerin’ my way across the old west. Or the new west, whatever the story might be. I haven’t done very much critical thinking beyond whether or not to rob that stage coach. So how about a list of other storytelling genres video game developer Rockstar could develop games for?

Rockstar Genre List 01

I’m still not entirely sure if that’s Arthur or John in the logo

The beauty of a Rockstar game is in the immersion. There are plenty of well-made sandbox games out there, but none reach the depth of world like a Rockstar game. From growing and styling your beard to polishing your guns to tracking animals to realistic mud physics, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a work of art. It’s a game where I like to just walk around, because it wouldn’t fit the story/world/character if he sprinted everywhere.

So Rockstar needs to abandon whatever money-making plans and start whole new franchise! They’ve got cops & robbers with Grand Theft Auto, they’ve got the wild west with Red Dead Redemption and they’ve got a boarding school setting with Bully. Join me after the jump for some loosely imagined other options!
