Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/16/21

Welcome to DC Fandome Day! Before the end of today, we’ll have a new trailer for The Batman movie, along with who knows what else! I cannot wait to see some of the new video game trailers, maybe even get a release date for Gotham Knights. I’ll post the trailers tomorrow! Until then, how about some comics?

Comic Book of the Week goes to Superman and the Authority #4, a really fun issue that wraps up a sadly very short little comic. It’s a damn shame Grant Morrison couldn’t make this their next ongoing.

Always smash white supremacists

Meanwhile, have I recommended Squid Game yet? I gave that show a try this past week and loved it…right up until the ending. Squid Game sells itself on being this wild and gruesome show, but I did not expect such rich character drama. Highly recommended. This week also saw the season 2 finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks, which was another banger! I want a million seasons of this show.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #76, Power Rangers #12, Superman and the Authority #4 and X-Men #4.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/9/21

Interesting week for comics this week! My only Big Two comics are two of the biggest comics ever: Batman and Amazing Spider-Man. I mix that up with some Power Rangers greatness and a peek at a Comixology Original by Scott Snyder, with We Have Demons!

Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin #12 for another phenomenal issue! Heck, this issue is still just the set-up for the next big event, but it’s so much fun to read! Ryan Parrott is a master of weaving interesting character drama, and he butts a lot of really fun heads together in this issue.

Comfy is the throne

Meanwhile, I finally watched Invincible on Amazon Prime and that show was just perfect! I’ve only read the first chunk or so of the actual comic, and a lot of that was covered in this first season. So that was fun. But the show itself is a real stand out. Everything is so well-crafted, and the showrunners (and probably Robert Kirkman himself) did a great job condensing everything into a workable TV show. Highly recommended. I also enjoyed the season finale for What If…? Expect my full review and thoughts on Wednesday.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #75, Batman #114, Mighty Morphin #12 and We Have Demons #1.

6 Thoughts on Venom: Let There Be Carnage

We are now living in a world where the Venom sequel might just top most of the major Marvel Studios movie releases this year. Venom: Let There Be Carnage exploded at the opening weekend box office, earning more than $90 million, beating the three day opening weekend totals of both Black Widow and Shang-Chi. Granted, these are pandemic numbers, but still! Venom 2 is apparently a popular movie!

Movie Rating: 6/10 – Pretty Good

I saw Venom: Let There Be Carnage opening night, because that’s how I roll with most superhero movies. I was a lukewarm fan of the first film, finding it to be a rather dumb affair, held aloft solely by the insane fun of Tom Hardy’s dual lead performances. The sequel brings all of that back, while also finally bringing Carnage into a live action movie. Fans have been waiting for Carnage for a very long time. Did he live up to the hype?

Join me after the jump for my thoughts and review of Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Expect FULL SPOILERS for the movie. And feel free to share your own thoughts on the film in the comments!

Spider-Man 2, Wolverine and So Many More Video Games Coming!

Yesterday was apparently a big day for Sony and Playstation to announce a bunch of exciting new upcoming video games — to come out a couple years from now. So we’ve all got to survive this pandemic to play the likes of Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, God of War: Ragnarok and more! I’m going to do my best.

First up is Spider-Man 2, the sequel to that great Spider-Man game a couple years ago from Insomniac. The Miles Morales game was just as good, in my opinion, but a full-on sequel should be a lot of fun.

We’ve got Kraven and Venom as villains, and those guys are always a hoot. This game should be another instant success.

Next up, Insomniac is making a Wolverine video game! That one is a real surprise.

Wolverine games have a good track record. Say what you will about the movie, but the X-Men Origins: Wolverine game was a blast way back in the day. The fighting, the healing, the gameplay, it was all top notch. And with the Spider-Man games, it’s clear that Insomniac knows how to make a character move around a world. So Wolverine is in good hands.

God of War: Ragnarok got a nice, beefy trailer and it looks as good as expected.

The story seems to have moved forward in some great ways, and we’re actually going to party with the Norse god of war, so that’s neat. This should be another instant classic as well. Playstation really knocks them out of the park sometimes.

The upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game got a new story trailer and it still looks…iffy.

Fortunately, this game comes out in October, so we’ll actually get to see whether or not this one is any good in a short time. Which is good, because I need a new video game. I’ve been getting by on scraps and old games for like a month now. This game could be fun…or it could be a big, swirling mess.

Lastly, they announced a remake for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

This is going to be remade from the ground up, they say, completely from scratch. They’re gonna redo the entire game with modern graphics and play style. This is fantastic, considering I never played the original Knights of the Old Republic. I tried it once, years after it came out, but it had lost its luster by then and I didn’t get very far into the game. I did play the sequel a couple of times, and that was great! So I’m very excited to try the main game for reals with modern everything.

And that’s about it for game trailers. I think there were more, but these are the ones I’m most interested in. Most of them are years away, but thankfully, I can be pretty patient. Plus it gives me more time to buy that Playstation 5.

6 Things I Want to See in Spider-Man: No Way Home

The first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived this week and the internet is having a celebration! Not all of the rumors were confirmed in the trailer, but enough has been teased that everybody seems pretty happy. I’m very excited myself. And as with most upcoming superhero movies, I have a list of demands!

I want to see this scene for sure

Anything can happen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The multiverse has been broken open, Into the Spider-Verse was a huge success, a lot of actors are still around; this movie could have everything. The only way to know for sure is to see it when it comes out on Dec. 17. But until then, I’m going to speculate wildly about what exactly I hope to see in this new movie. Life is just fun that way.

And feel free to share your own hopes and dreams for Spider-Man: No Way Home in the comments!
