LEGO Batman Movie Doesn’t Look Too Bad After All

Look, as a Robin fan, I’ve got to make my peace with the short shorts and the pixie boots. There’s just no other way around it. I hate them with a passion, and I hate that society as a whole has so maligned Robin because of them. So yeah, it bugs me that they’re the first go-to joke in the full trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie.

But other than that, I don’t think Robin’s portrayal is all that bad! And Michael Cera does a pretty great voice! I’ve just got to keep faith in the franchise. The LEGO Movie is one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, with a completely unexpected depth. If this movie can pull off that same trick with Batman and Robin, then wholly heck! That would be amazing.

Plus, it doesn’t look like we’re going to get Robin in the DC Cinematic Universe, so I suppose I should take what I can get.

The First Look at LEGO Movie Robin is Not Encouraging

Your favorite sidekick and mine will debut and star in the upcoming LEGO Batman Movie next February. Seeing as how I’m a huge Robin fan, I’m very excited. But knowing how Robin is typically treated in pop culture, I’m also very worried. These first pictures, revealed by USA Today, have me more worried than excited.

What’s with the eyes?

Sparkly cape? Big googly eyes? Probably pixie boots? Eh.

And the cape?

Robin will be voiced by Michael Cera, which is fine, I suppose. According to director Chris McKay, Robin starts out as an annoyance to Batman’s lone vigilante style. Batman accidentally adopts him during a charity auction. He describes the character thusly:

“Robin is a super-positive kid who always sees the glass as half full. Really, at the end of the day, he just wants a hug. Michael brings the sweetness and honesty.”

So I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. There should be a new trailer debuting at some point during Comic-Con!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/16/16

It is a dark day in comics, my friends. But not in the way Marvel probably wants me to think. But I’m not sure I have any idea what Marvel is thinking anymore. I don’t know what drives them. Is it sales? Is it controversy? Is it headlines? Because it’s definitely not storytelling, not anymore.

Civil War II #3 kind of breaks me. But not due to the story or the art. Not even due to the power behind the twist. It breaks me in that I just don’t know why I should care anymore…

Fortunately, this wee also brings us an excellent new issue of Power Man and Iron Fist, and I’m reminded why I care again. Hooray Comic Book of the Week!

Don’t forget Wolverine!

Somebody at Marvel is doing something good. I’m gonna stick with that part of Marvel.

Comic Reviews: Civil War II #3, Detective Comics #936, Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy #2, Nightwing Rebirth #1, Power Man and Iron Fist #6, and Wonder Woman #2.

Comic Review: Teen Titans Annual #2

I am a huge fan of hyperbole. It makes everything better. So believe me when I say this is probably Scott Lobdell’s finest Teen Titans comic in the entire New 52 era. I’m not entirely sure why Teen Titans gets an Annual issue on this Fifth Wednesday with a total status quo change right around the corner, but whatever. I can go with the flow. I don’t mind reading new comics, especially when they’re this solid. I daresay, Teen Titans should have been like this all along.

Comic Rating: 7/10 – Good.

Teen Titans Annual #2 gets to be Lobdell’s finest Titans issue for a few simple reasons: there’s an extended sequence of the Titans hanging out as civilians, the super-villain actually ties into an earlier comic that I liked, and there was some legitimate characterization and development. This issue isn’t about to break the mold or convince DC to not Rebirth Teen Titans, nor is it going to make me forget the past few years of crumminess. But considering we’re just killing time until Rebirth, it’s nice that Lobdell gets another chance to go out on a high note.

Honestly, I had completely forgotten about the unresolved plot thread in this issue. The Annual picks up from the encounter with Professor Pyg way back in December in Teen Titans #15. I liked that issue, and I like this one. That’s probably the best we can hope for with the Teen Titans, for now.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/25/16

How did I get so lucky that all of my favorite comics come out in the same week? As a comic book fan, that’s great! As a comic book reviewer who is having a pretty busy week at work, that stinks! I managed to read a few of my favorites for sure this week, but I’ll be missing out reviews for the likes of Doctor Strange and Totally Awesome Hulk! I’ve also already blown my promise to try out some of the Rebirth titles, since I didn’t get around to reading Aquaman or Wonder Woman.

Guess I’ll just have to make due with the likes of Harley Quinn, Mighty Thor, Ms. Marvel, Power Rangers, and instant Comic Book of the Week, Power Man and Iron Fist! I should be so lucky as to have comics this good all in one week!

I’m sure Aquaman and Wonder Woman were fine too.

Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #935, Harley Quinn #29, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers #4, Mighty Thor #8, Ms. Marvel #8 and Power Man and Iron Fist #5.
