Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/25/17
We’ve got one of those weird, outlier, DC-only weeks again! I will gladly admit that I prefer Marvel Comics, but in an effort to be in any way impartial, I do keep trying to read more DC for these reviews! And this week is all DC Comics (with one non-Marvel exception).
We’ve got really fun issues of Detective Comics and Harley Quinn, but the real winner this week is the new issue of Batgirl. It had a lot of great moments, earning it Comic Book of the Week!
Normally this is where I would review the latest issue of the Big Event, but I’ve decided to shake things up and actually review the individual Doomsday Clock issues. It’s a sequel to Watchmen, so I figure I owe it to…I dunno, the comic book gods? Either way, look below for my review of Doomsday Clock!
Comic Reviews: Batgirl #17, Detective Comics #969, Doomsday Clock #1, Harley Quinn #32 and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #21.
6 Thoughts on Justice League
Just in time for DC to stop caring about a connected cinematic universe comes Justice League, the big screen gathering of some of DC Comics’ greatest superheroes! Coming after the great Wonder Woman solo film and the horrendous Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice team film, Justice League appears to be an attempt to course correct and just make a nice movie for once. I think they succeeded!

Movie Rating: 6/10 – Pretty Good
I liked Justice League better than I expected to. I went in with very low expectations, but had to remind myself in the theater to stop looking for things to dislike and to just sit back and enjoy the film. I’m glad I did.
I don’t know everything about the jumbled creation of this Justice League film, but it’s worth noting that director Zack Snyder had to back out during post-produciton due to a family crisis, and Joss Whedon stepped in to fix it up. I’m still a big Whedon fan, so that was solid news. But there’s also the fact that there were extensive reshoots, a lot of reports of recalibrating the film to be more likable, and the fact that it was originally pitched as a two-parter, but has since been pared down to just the one film. That’s a pretty rocky road to the cinema.
But I’m not one to hold any of that against a film! Join me after the jump for my list-based review of the Justice League movie! Expect FULL SPOILERS! And I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
6 Comics I Want to See Brian Michael Bendis Write for DC
The big comic book news of the month is that writer Brian Michael Bendis has finally made the jump from Marvel to DC! This is pretty huge news! Bendis is one of the most popular and noted comic book writers of the modern era, having had a big hand in shaping the Marvel Universe for the past decade and beyond. This is the guy who created Jessica Jones, turned the Avengers into a popular comic book franchise and recreated the wheel with Ultimate Spider-Man.

Also once considered my favorite comic book writer
It has always made sense for Bendis to eventually try out DC Comics for awhile. Lots of writers jump back and forth between the Big Two. Heck, Bendis was notable for having not done that. So it feels inevitable that some deal would be reached and his creative energy would be employed by the direct competition.
I, for one, am rather excited to see what Bendis writes at DC. I know I’ll be picking up his new comics, whatever they might be. And I just happened to have a couple suggestions.

We’re less than a week away from the Justice League movie! Will it be terrible? Can a third weekend of Thor: Ragnarok defeat it at the box office? I kind of hope so! To celebrate, lets read some Batman, Mister Miracle, Ms. Marvel and Runaways comics!
Comic Book of the Week goes to the latest issue of Harley Quinn! The creative team really delivers a stunning cliffhanger to take us into the final issues. It’s exactly what this comic needed!
I also highly recommend checking out this week’s issue of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! I didn’t review the issue because it’s a smattering of short vignettes, possibly done to raise money for a charity? It’s hard to tell, but the stories are delightful!
Comic Review: Detective Comics #968, Harley Quinn #31, Mister Miracle #4, Ms. Marvel #24 and Runaways #3.

Happy Halloween! The most spooktacular holiday of the year is right around the corner, and if you’re reading this on Saturday, I’m right in the middle of some solid celebrations! I have two costumes this year: Walmart is selling giant animal mascot heads for only $20, so I snagged me a rabbit head! And then I’m going to a zombie party tonight! Should be fun!
But I also had comics to read! And they were pretty much spectacular across the board this week, I was amazed! I wanted to give everything a super high score! From Amazing Spider-Man to Detective Comics to Power Rangers! But I would be remiss if the final issue of the Slott/Allred Silver Surfer didn’t blow me away. Comic Book of the Week for sure!
Perhaps even Comic Book of the Year! I was worried they wouldn’t stick the landing, but oh man, Slott and Co. were saving something really, really special for this final issue. Something that pretty much tied the entire damn story together. My hat is off to the creative team of Silver Surfer. This was a masterpiece from beginning to end.
