My Two Cents on the Disney/Star Wars Merger
I was literally speechless when I heard the news yesterday that Disney had bought Star Wars for $4 billion, and that they plan to launch Star Wars: Episode 7 in 2015. The very idea that there’s going to be a new Star Wars trilogy is mind-blowing to a sci-fi geek like me. Not to mention the fact that it will be at the hands of the Disney corporation, the largest and most maniacal company in the world. But now I’ve slept on this information, taken some time to think it over, and I think this is actually a really cool thing.
I’m more than a little worried for the Expanded Universe and other Star Wars tie-ins, but overall, this may be for the best.
You can read the full press release here. And I’m sure you can find all manner of different opinions and comments all over the Internets. This is huge geek news. Star Wars is one of those rare franchises that is embraced and beloved by the entire world. It’s an institution. And frankly, it’s kind of weird to realize that it’s only ever been in the hands of George Lucas and Lucasfilm all these years. It’s also weird to think that Disney could just buy Star Wars, but it’s happened, this is all happening. This isn’t a prank or a Halloween hoax. Disney now owns Star Wars. A new sequel trilogy is happening.
Wow.
Join me for more after the jump.
Disney Has Bought Star Wars for $4 Billion – Star Wars: Episode 7 Scheduled for 2015
This is all over the business-section of the Internet today, and I just…I’m speechless. I’m just going to throw up the full press release for anybody and everybody to read, and maybe in a day or two I’ll have something intelligent to say. I’m going to follow this story all night if I have to! Or if you don’t believe just me, check out The Hollywood Reporter or any number of other websites. I am fully prepared to accept eating crow if this is a hoax.
Here’s the full press release. I’ve highlighted George Lucas’ comments, because he’s a pretty cool guy:
Continuing its strategy of delivering exceptional creative content to audiences around the world, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. in a stock and cash transaction. Lucasfilm is 100% owned by Lucasfilm Chairman and Founder, George Lucas. Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney stock on October 26, 2012, the transaction value is $4.05 billion, with Disney paying approximately half of the consideration in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. The final consideration will be subject to customary post-closing balance sheet adjustments.
“Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”
“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said George Lucas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lucasfilm. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”
Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, including its massively popular and “evergreen” Star Wars franchise and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, animation, visual effects, and audio post production. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. Lucasfilm, headquartered in San Francisco, operates under the names Lucasfilm Ltd., LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, and the present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.
Kathleen Kennedy, current Co-Chairman of Lucasfilm, will become President of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Ms. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant. Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.
The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that already includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.
Driven by a tremendously talented creative team, Lucasfilm’s legendary Star Wars franchise has flourished for more than 35 years, and offers a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases and franchise growth over the long term. Star Wars resonates with consumers around the world and creates extensive opportunities for Disney to deliver the content across its diverse portfolio of businesses including movies, television, consumer products, games and theme parks. Star Wars feature films have earned a total of $4.4 billion in global box to date, and continued global demand has made Star Wars one of the world’s top product brands, and Lucasfilm a leading product licensor in the United States in 2011. The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms, putting the acquisition in strong alignment with Disney’s strategic priorities for continued long-term growth.
The Lucasfilm acquisition follows Disney’s very successful acquisitions of Pixar and Marvel, which demonstrated the company’s unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling through the application of innovative technology and multiplatform distribution on a truly global basis to create maximum value. Adding Lucasfilm to Disney’s portfolio of world class brands significantly enhances the company’s ability to serve consumers with a broad variety of the world’s highest-quality content and to create additional long-term value for our shareholders.
The Boards of Directors of Disney and Lucasfilm have approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, and other customary closing conditions. The agreement has been approved by the sole shareholder of Lucasfilm.
The Captain American Sequel Has Made a Good Choice for Its Villain
The man who killed Captain America has been cast as the villain in Captain America: Winter Soldier. The villainous mercenary Crossbones will be played by Frank Grillo, who I’ve never heard of.
I think this is an awesome choice of villain! If you’ve been reading Captain America over the past few years, especially around the time he was killed after Civil War, then you know just how badass and mencing Crossbones can be. He’s a big, tough, brickhouse of a man, with a truly sinister mask. And best of all, he doesn’t have some silly superhero costume. He dresses like a badass mercenary, a perfect fit in the more realistic-looking Marvel Movieverse. Crossbones could be a really gritty foe, able to get up close and personal in a fight with Cap, which is just what the next movie needs.
As for Frank Grillo, I have no idea. Apparently he’s appeared in stuff like The Grey and End of Watch, but I haven’t seen either. Does anybody have any idea whether or not Grillo would be good in the role?
For those of you who don’t know, the Winter Solder is actually Captain America’s sidekick, Bucky, who we all saw was killed in the first movie when he fell into that gorge. But as any comics fan will tell you: if there’s no body, he’s not dead. In the comics, Bucky’s body was recovered by the Soviets, and they turned him into a mind-controlled assassin. The name ‘Winter Soldier’ comes from the fact that they would put him in cryogenic freezing between missions, and unfreeze him every few years to kill somebody. This kept Bucky relatively young, and allows him to reappear in the modern day without being an 80-year-old geezer.
So if the new Captain America sequel follows the comic, we can bet that Bucky is going to be re-awakened in the modern day to face Captain America. In the comics, Bucky was woken up by the Red Skull, who was working with his henchman Crossbones and his daughter Sin. This was all part of a plot to destroy Cap, which included his assassination. Crossbones killed Cap with a sniper bullet on federal courthouse steps after Captain America was taken into custody following the superhero Civil War. Long story.
But with Crossbones now cast in the film, do you think we might see the death of Captain America? Or something similar?
And do you think Crossbones could carry a movie by himself? He’ll definitely be aided by the Winter Soldier, most likely. There’s been no word on whether or not the Red Skull would return, but actor Hugo Weaving has gone on record as saying he has no interest in returning to the role. I think that’s pretty much garbage, but then I have little patience for actors who consider themselves better than their roles.
Honestly though, I don’t even want the Red Skull to return for the sequel. He had his go, and definitely fit better when he could be surrounded by actual Nazis in World War II. Captain America is in the modern world now, and he should deal with modern problems. Leave the past in the past. He should face problems list terrorism and mercenary violence, so I think Crossbones is a great choice for the villain in Captain America: Winter Soldier.
What do you guys and girls think? Let me know in the comments!
Surprise, Surprise, I’m Posting More Hobbit Stuff
If you hate the idea of the new Hobbit film this December, this blog probably isn’t for you. Because it’s exactly what I want.
The excellent trailer and TV ads continue for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and I feel no shame in sharing them with you, my readers. I love’em, and I trust most of you are just as geeky as me. Plus, as I said earlier this week, this has just been a slow week for good geek news. So enjoy this for now, and later today I’m going to unveil a new comic reviewing style. Let’s see what you think of that!
A Hobbit Halloween is Spooktacular
I’m sorry, but there are no puns in the world that would do this video justice, so I went with the easiest one.
The above video was made by the Brotherhood Workshop, who also made the Cranky Cavetroll video. How do we make it so that this team only ever makes humorous LEGO videos from now on? I want a steady stream of these awesome videos for the rest of my life, and definitely to include more than just the Lord of the Rings LEGOs. OK, guys? Make it happen. This stuff is amazing.
