Review: Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #5

Curse you, transition issues, you are the bane of my comic book reviewing existence! Writer Brian Michael Bendis delivers another stellar chapter in Miles Morales’ current superhero woes, but it’s the sort of chapter that takes us from Point A to Point B instead of delivering any really great story moments of its own! And those it does deliver are obvious cliffhangers! It’s so frustrating, but only because the comic is still oh so good!

Ultimate Spider-Man #5

Ultimate Spider-Man #5 is a perfect example of why some comics should be read in the trade! I don’t know if I can wait for the next issue! Exclamation!

Comic Rating: 8/10 – Very Good.

But I’m going to have to wait. I’m a big boy, I can suck it up and deal. Bendis and superstar artist David Marquez are at the top of their game here, telling a tightly packed, vivid story. I would probably even go out on a limb and say their Spider-Man comic is better than the regular Spider-Man comic. Ultimate Spider-Man is just so much more involved, so much more epic. Dan Slott might be dealing with classic Peter Parker and his big supporting cast, but Bendis is telling such a grounded, long-lasting saga here. These characters all have history, they have agency, and that just makes for a stronger story.

I only wish I wasn’t reading it one issue at a time, but that’s no one’s fault or choice but my own.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/20/14

I don’t know what happened this week, henchies, but I’ve got a pretty light pile. It helps that I’m not reading Futures End, but more on that later. I had a pretty busy week. I’ve got some projects in the pipeline that I’ll tell you guys and gals about someday. But nothing stops me from reading comics! Nothing!

This week was…alright. Solid week. No real complaints from me. Actually, this seemed to be the week for alternate versions of characters. Both Multiversity and Edge of Spider-Verse told alternate reality stories, and the new Avengers event is set 8 months into a possible future. So neat! Way to create an unintentional theme, comic books!

Comic Book of the Week goes to…um…tough call. I think I’ll give it to Multiversity #2 for a pretty darn fun alternate reality comic. Though, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, Batman Eternal was close to winning!

Not always, I don’t

If Batman Eternal transitioned into Spoiler: The Comic, I would be so happy.

Over at Word of the Nerd, I took a gander at another Deadpool comic. Regular readers might know how much I dislike Deadpool’s sense of humor these days, but the cameo revival of no less than Brute Force brought me back!

Never heard of Brute Force? You should pay a visit to Linkara.

Comic Reviews: Avengers #35, Batman Eternal #24, Edge of Spider-Verse #2, Multiversity #2 and Uncanny X-Men #26.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/13/14

A week after my birthday and I get all my presents! How else do you explain new issues of Hawkeye, Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel all arriving in the same week? I would be hard-pressed to name three other comics I enjoy reading more these days. So thank you, Marvel, for the belated birthday present. I understand you need to stick to Wednesdays.

And lucky for us, they’re all pretty good!

Though having to choose between Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel for Comic Book of the Week is tough. I think I’m going to have to give the edge to Hawkeye for another Kate Bishop issue by Matt Fraction and Annie Wu. It was the battle of the adorable protagonists, and Kate Bishop won by a nose.

Kate Bishop knows a good blog when she sees one

Kate and Kamala are both cutie pies.

Speaking of cutie pies, I decided to pay a visit to New Warriors again before the end, because it’s an issue that serves as a would-be epilogue to Scarlet Spider. Does it live up to that previous series? No. Is it still fun? I suppose.

And anyone who is interested can read my review of Death of Wolverine #2 over at Word of the Nerd. I’ve decided to review all four issues of that weekly series, and it hasn’t been too bad so far.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #6, Batman Eternal #23, Captain Marvel #7, Hawkeye #20, Magneto #9, Ms. Marvel #8 and New Warriors #9.

6 X-Men Who Are Ready For Their Movie Close Up

There are probably going to be more X-Men movies from now until the end of time. Think about it. At what point does FOX stop making X-Men movies? What is the breaking point? We’re more than 10 years into the superhero movie extravaganza, with seven X-Men movies already on the big screen, and the latest one – Days of Future Past – being hailed as the best one of the entire series.

Not to mention the fact that if FOX stops making X-Men movies, then those lucrative licensing rights revert back to their sworn enemies, Disney and Marvel. So why would FOX ever stop making new X-Men movies?!

They’ve already doubled up on Magnetos and Xaviers

They wouldn’t. Heck, I’m surprised we haven’t seen more spin-offs. There’s that X-Force movie everybody’s always talking about. Next up in the main franchise is X-Men: Age of Apocalypse. And there’s another Wolverine movie coming at some point. There are a lot more movies coming out – which means FOX needs a lot more mutants to throw into the mix. Days of Future Past alone introduced Quicksilver, Blink, Warpath and Sunspot. Who’s left?

Each new movie seems to bring along new characters from the comics. And considering how deep the pool of X-Men and mutants is, I thought I’d give FOX a hand and name six comic book mutants ready to strut their stuff on the big screen!

Wanna Take a Peep at the Vision in Age of Ultron?

Movie spoilers are almost unavoidable in this day and age, especially with these big budget superhero movies. Marvel and DC can cast whoever they want, and impose whatever gag orders they want, but somehow, eventually, we’re going to find out ahead of time that Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman or that Cosmo is going to be in your Guardians of the Galaxy movie (though I am a little annoyed that we don’t have confirmation on Robin/Nightwing yet in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice). This is the case with the Vision in Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Marvel and the actor were doing their best to keep him under wraps, but he’s out there – in fact, he’s even appearing in promotional material.

Hopefully to a tailor

I’m going to save the actual image for after the jump, for those of you who still want to resist spoilers.

The Vision is a classic Avenger from the comic. He’s an android with a rather gaudy costume who eventually learns things like loyalty and love. Classic android stuff. Personally, I’ve never been a fan, but you better believe I’m super excited to see him in Age of Ultron.

Join me after the jump for the first real glimpse of the Vision!
