Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 9/30/17

Comic Convention Season is almost over! Tomorrow I will be selling Gamer Girl & Vixen at Uticon in lovely Utica, NY, so if you live in the area, stop on by! For now, though, I’m reading regular comics!

Plenty of fun entries this week, from the proper return of Tim Drake in Detective Comics to the return of Volstagg in The Mighty Thor. But Comic Book of the Week goes to the new issue of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for some great character moments, great monsters and a great twist ending!

Goth Sloth 01

Beware the Goth Sloth!

I also read the first issue of Marvel Legacy, and it was fine. It’s mostly just a big tease for all of Marvel’s upcoming storylines, and some of them look fine. None of them tickle my fancy, so I just hope we get some good stories out of them. I don’t particularly like this 1,000,000 BC Avengers, even if it’s slightly clever. And the less said about the real Wolverine’s “return” the better.

I can’t have missed you if you never went away, Old Man!

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #15, Detective Comics #965, Infamous Iron Man #12, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #17 and Mighty Thor #23.

The 6 Best Loser Teams in Comics

Want a little peek into the mind of creating weekly geeky listicles? So there I was putting together a list of comic book clowns based on the movie It, since I watched it and enjoyed it this month, and everybody loves comic book clowns. But as I was writing an intro — just like this one — I started talking up the awesomeness of The Losers Club. Those kids were the best part of the movie!

Loser Club List 01

Danger things

Granted, the kids themselves weren’t losers, they were pretty great. But it got me thinking about all the best loser clubs in comics! Not every super team can be the Justice League or even the Legion of Doom. Sometimes we get purposefully silly teams of losers who are too pathetic to amount to much! And I tend to love all those teams! They’re too pathetic and adorable not to love!

Join me after the jump for the best, most endearing teams of super losers in comics!

Hench-Sized Comic Reviews – 9/23/17

Big news, everybody! This week, we have an abundance of DC Comics! I’ve been trying to read more of them lately, despite being a confirmed Marvel Zombie. And this week, the stars aligned and more of my DC comics came out than Marvel! Huzzah and kudos!

So we’ve got new Harley Quinn, new Aquaman, new Batwoman, new Wild Storm and the Comic Book of the Week, the new Batman! This whole War of Jokes and Riddles has been worth it for what writer Tom King is doing with Kite Man.

Kite Man Rules 02

We’re talking kites

Hell yeah.

Comic Reviews: Aquaman #28, Batman #31, Batwoman #7, Harley Quinn #28, Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #4 and The Wild Storm #7.

First Full Punisher TV Show Trailer Violates First Basic Rule of Punisher

Sigh. I should have expected this. They couldn’t get it right in the Punisher movies, they didn’t get it right in the second season of Daredevil; why should they get it right in the Punisher’s actual TV show?

Let’s see if you can spot it in this first full trailer! The show will arrive sometime this year.

The one thing that separates the Punisher from every other revenge thriller out there is that the Punisher isn’t out for revenge. The Punisher is out to punish!

Frank Castle is an ordinary man with an exceptional set of skills whose family just happens to get caught in the crossfire of a mob shooting, and who, in response, sets out to punish all criminals everywhere. Yes, at some point he deals with the mobsters who killed his family, but the Punisher is largely about attacking criminals who had nothing to do with his family’s deaths. That’s what makes him so dangerous! So compelling! That’s what makes him work so well!

But nope, apparently the show is is about some deep-seeded military conspiracy focused on Frank Castle himself, and he’s got to get revenge against those people. Sigh.

Call me if season 2 adapts The Slavers.

Thor: Ragnarok Hype Is Real!

Thor: Ragnarok is only, like, two months away! And the hype is very real! So real, in fact, that the people at the Nerdist made this awesome, 80’s-style movie trailer to go along with the movie’s already spectacular 80’s style!

The internet does good work, people. The Nerdist does good work. I’m just glad I get to be here to reap the rewards!
