The 6 Best and the 6 Worst Parts of DC’s New 52

The New 52 is over; long live DC Comics. After more than three years of sticking to their rigid, grim and gritty house style, the second biggest publisher in comics has decided to try something different — and I couldn’t be happier. I quickly soured to the New 52 and have barely hung on all these years later.

Get out of there Cyborg, you’re not Justice League

When DC rebooted their entire comics lineup in 2011 — including everyone from Superman and Batman to Green Lantern — they decided that the best way to reach fans was with dark, gritty comics aimed at teenage boys and young men. They published 52 comics a month and called the whole event the ‘New 52’. But comic book fans are prone to change, and nowadays we want a variety of different comics and styles, definitely not just grim and gritty. Marvel Comics, the biggest publisher, understands this and routinely beats DC in sales.

So starting in June, DC will abandon their New 52 way of thinking and will start offering new comics with new styles for new audiences. It’s a great plan! But before it’s gone, I wanted to take a look back at 6 things I liked and 6 things I loathed in the New 52. Hopefully DC can learn from this.

6 Ways The Walking Dead Could End

I’m a huge fan of The Walking Dead TV show, and I can’t wait for the show to return this Sunday. But something about the first half-season got me thinking: where the heck is this show going? We’re five seasons into The Walking Dead, and theoretically, this show can’t last forever. It’s got maybe two or three seasons left, according to the lives of most TV shows.

So how is The Walking Dead going to end?

With zombies, probably

It’s an interesting question when you consider that the comic book can go on for much longer. Comics aren’t bound in the same way as TV seasons, and writer Robert Kirkman can just keep writing that comic for as long as he wants, considering how popular it is. But TV audiences are eventually going to get bored of The Walking Dead, right? At some point, the showrunners are going to want to bring it to a close. Breaking Bad only had five seasons. Lost called it quits after six. The Walking Dead has to end sometime.

But how? Join me after the jump for some of my ideas! Be warned, because there will be SPOILERS from the latest episodes.

6 Superheroes With Football in Their Veins

The Big Game is this Sunday, and I’m not quite sure if an innocent little geek blogger like myself is allowed to use the words ‘Super Bowl’. Uh oh! I just said it! Ah well, hopefully this week’s List of Six can get the NFL on my side and there won’t be any lawsuits. Let’s talk about some football!

More fights should be decided by football

Specifically, let’s talk about superheroes with a penchant for football! That’s more my style anyway. But there’s one problem: there aren’t many sports-themed superheroes! When I tried to do a sports-themed list last year, I had to resort to skateboarders and a guy who throws javelins in order to reach six entries! But this year I went outside my wheelhouse and did some real digging!

So join me after the jump for six superheroes known for tossing around the pigskin!

6 Characters That Need Action Figures (So I Can Buy Them)

No, I don’t take my action figures down off their shelves and play with them when I’m home alone. That’s silly. But I do take them out of the packages and put them up on my book shelves and Geek Wall. They’re decoration, and cool ones at that. Some people collect porcelain figures or football memorabilia, I collect Spider-Man action figures. There’s nothing wrong with me!

Though it’s an addiction that is always in need of feeding.

I could hold the Justice League in the palm of my hands

I buy action figures because I like owning memorabilia of my favorite characters, be they superheroes, video game stars, cartoon characters or whatever floats my boat that day. Earlier this week, I splurged on Bebop and Rocksteady action figures from the current Ninja Turtles cartoons, because those are two characters I’ve really come to appreciate in the past few years, and I didn’t own any figures of them (plus I love that cartoon). This year my goals are to get action figures for Hobgoblin, movie Ant-Man and Clementine from The Walking Dead video games. All it takes is a little extra cash and a misguided interest in not paying my bills that week.

But of all the action figures in my collection, who am I missing? What characters do I love but lack any sort of decent action figure? Not every superhero gets a toy, especially some of the ones I like. Join me after the jump for six action figures I would love to own – if they ever bother to get made.

6 More Potential Shows for the Arrow-Verse

Word hit the Internet this week that not only will the superhero Vixen be joining the same TV universe as Arrow and The Flash, but that producers are considering the Atom for their next spin-off. Clearly the people at Warner Bros. can recognize success, and they want to bank as much as possible on their winning superhero formula. Marvel is building a shared superhero universe in the movies, so it looks like DC is going to do the same on TV.

I’m all for it! I love both Arrow and The Flash, and I would love to see more heroes jump to the small screen. I think I’m even more excited for the potential of a small screen Justice League than I am for whatever big screen version that Warner Bros. is trying to develop.

This is totally gonna be a thing!

Beyond Arrow, The Flash and the new Vixen cartoon, there’s also talk that upcoming shows about Supergirl and the Teen Titans will be part of the same universe (or at least there were, stupid CBS!). Clearly DC shows no sign of slowing down. But what other shows can they produce?

This is one of my favorite List of Six games, and I invite all of you to join me in coming up with some great ideas. What other superheroes could get shows to tie into the Arrow-Verse? The only rules are that they must fit the aesthetic of the Arrow-Verse, so super-powers are OK, but keep things grounded and gritty. And they can’t be Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman, because the universe is still partially a terrible place, and those characters are apparently only going to appear in the movies.

So join me after the jump to see my ideas. And join me in the comments to share some of your own!
