Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/27/19

Avengers: Endgame was great! I’m not even going to beat around the bush. It was great, it was fantastic, it was everything I could have wanted. It’s the real deal, a true grand finale. Go watch it!

Comics this week almost pale in comparison. Action Comics and Runaways are pretty fun, while Fantastic Four and Heroes in Crisis disappoint. And Comic Book of the Week goes to Mr & Mrs X!

Meanwhile, X-Tremists is still the only comic I’m reading from Age of X-Man and it remains pretty darn good. At least when it comes to character development for the Blob, and now Psylocke, too! Honestly, I will consider Age of X-Man a win as a whole if this leads to a Blob renaissance.

Comic Reviews: Action Comics #1010, Fantastic Four #9, Heroes in Crisis #8, Mr. & Mrs. X #10 and Runaways #20.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/13/19

Comic release schedules have morphed into a weird track for me. How is it that all of my current favorite comics come out in the exact same week, forced to battle it out for Comic Book of the Week? Nearly any of the comics I read this week could have trounced some of the garbage I read other weeks.

As much as I’ve been loving Wonder Twins — and this week saw another stellar issue — an old champion has revealed it still has legs and comedy chops! Unbeatable Squirrel Girl wins Comic Book of the Week for a really fun and funny tie-in to War of the Realms!

Meanwhile, the new issue of Batman featured interior art by Amanda Conner, one of my favorite comic book artist of all time. I’m quite pleased with the issue, which sees the bachelor party of Catwoman, wherein she and Lois Lane party at the Fortress of Solitude. Unfortunately, I did not review the issue because Batman remains trapped in a weird dream prison thing, so I’m finding each individual issue difficult to grade. Fun stuff, though.

Comic Book Reviews: Go Go Power Rangers #19, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #43, Unstoppable Wasp #6, Wonder Twins #3 and X-23 #11.

6 Thoughts on Shazam!

The battle of the Captain Marvel movies is finally in full swing, with Shazam! showing up to deliver a nearly knockout blow to the Marvel counterpart. Which one is better? Hard to say. Both have their strengths. But I think I’m going to give the edge to Shazam! because it’s just so much fun!

Shazam Review List 01

Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great.

DC Comics has cast off the shackles of the grim and gritty Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice films and they have embraced the fun of their superheroes. They’ve also done away with the need to tie everything together, even though Shazam! has several references to the wider DCEU. I think that is a good choice for them. It frees up each movie to be focused on itself. And if they’re going to try to repair the damage they did to themselves, keeping things simple is the best choice.

It definitely worked for Shazam! Join me after the jump for my review of the movie! And be careful of FULL SPOILERS for Shazam!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/6/19

Like with most big superhero movie openings, I’m not usually reading the similar comics, so I can’t tell you how the latest Shazam comic is doing. But the Shazam! movie is great! So much fun! I’ll have a review up on Wednesday!

Comics were pretty OK this week, from Captain America to The Green Lantern. I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to the first issue of War of the Realms. It’s good, but not great, and the art is spectacular!

War of Wars 01

This army lacks discipline and leadership

Speaking of which, for the first time in a long time, I’m going to be reviewing a Marvel Big Event comic! They burned me out with Civil War II and I’ve been largely ignoring their crappy movie tie-ins since. But War of the Realms isn’t connected to any movies and is coming to us on the back of years’ worth of Jason Aaron-written Thor comics, which I have loved since the beginning. So I have high hopes!

Good Old DC Movies

I went and saw Shazam! last night and it was great! Very fun, very enjoyable; another quality movie out of DC. I’m excited to see them fully turning away from the horrors of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Likewise, honestly, I also enjoyed Aquaman when it came out!

The Honest Trailers people are a reliable source of enjoyable videos for me to post on a lazy Friday off from work. They need to get more credit for that contribution to society!
