And Just Like That, Here’s the Suicide Squad!
Sunday had a big surprise for everybody: the first cast pic of the Suicide Squad! Everybody’s in costume!
From left, we’ve got Slipknot, Captain Boomerang, Enchantress, Katana, Rick Flagg, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc and El Diablo. They’re also all played by cool actors, but I’ve only got so many fingers for typing.
My initial reaction was shock, because there’s a whole lot to take in when you first see this picture. Then once you start looking it over, there’s a lot to like. Katana, Killer Croc, Boomerang and especially Deadshot look great. Slipknot and Diablo are clearly just there as cannon fodder. And Harley Quinn looks…OK, she looks OK.
Speaking of Deadshot, played by Will Smith, here we have a solo shot with the mask and everything!
I am definitely down for Will Smith to kick all kinds of butt in this movie.
Though I’m disappointed that Joker isn’t in this picture. I’ve been hoping beyond hope that Joker was actually a member of Task Force X and not some Hannibal Lecter guy in a cell. But we’ll see!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/2/15
This is a great weekend for comics! Not only is Avengers: Age of Ultron tearing up the box office (expect my review tomorrow), but it’s also Free Comic Book Day! And my own comic, Gamer Girl & Vixen, is only two weeks away from launching on Kickstarter! What a time to be alive, I tell ya!
Due to my seeing Age of Ultron twice in as many days, my review pile is a little light this week. Well, light in terms of number of issues reviewed. For some reason, I went on a real nitpicky exploration of Batman #40. You might want to skip that one if you don’t want to hear me drone on endlessly about why I don’t care for Scott Snyder’s Joker.
And skip right down to Bitch Planet #4, the Comic Book of the Week! That series is starting to pick up steam!
Over at Word of the Nerd, you can check out my review of Fantastic Four #645. It’s being hailed as the final Fantastic Four comic ever, but trust me, it’s not. The comic isn’t even written as a finale. The Fantastic Four will be back as soon as Marvel is done having a beef with FOX Studios.
Comic Reviews: Batman #40, Bitch Planet #4, Princess Leia #3 and Silk #3.
Finally! Robin Confirmed for Batman: Arkham Knight!
I have been waiting patiently for this news, and it’s finally here! Robin is going to play a major role in Batman: Arkham Knight! He’ll be joined by both Nightwing and Catwoman, so that’s even more awesome! But Robin is the one I really care about, and his cool new costume! Check out the badass new game trailer to see him in action.
According to what I’m reading, there’s going to be something called ‘Dual Play’ that allows players to switch between all these heroes on the fly in the middle of the free-flow combat. The video offers some ways that this could work, but we’ll have to see it to believe it. All I really care about is that Robin is definitely going to be a part of this game! Awesome!
Of course, I can’t yet even play the game. I don’t own either of the consoles that can play it, and my computer isn’t nearly strong enough. So I guess I better start saving up if I hope to get that new graphics card by the end of June!

The Joker Is as the Joker Is
The first image of the new movie Joker has hit the Internet, and responses are mixed…though mostly mocking. The picture is pretty extreme, and I’m not sure how I really feel about it, but it’s clear they went in an entirely different direction than Heath Ledger’s Joker. That was probably the best idea.
On a surface level, I don’t like it, mostly because I’ve never understood the appeal of grills. Why do you want to put metal on your front teeth like that? It looks painful and stupid. But on the other hand, I’m willing to give this Joker a chance. The Joker is one of those characters who can be re-interpreted in any number of different ways. In fact, I’m pretty sure it’s an established part of the character that he’s constantly changing his image.
And in the dark and gritty DC Cinematic Universe, perhaps this is what the Joker looks like. I don’t really have much faith in the DCCU, but maybe they’re going somewhere where this. I’m willing to wait and see.
But I do find it kind of funny that this Joker was revealed at the same time as the Internet is collectively mocking a similarly proposed and rejected take on Spider-Man.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/25/15
By this time next week, I will have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron. I can’t wait! The anticipation is nearly overwhelming! What am I supposed to do until then? Read comics?! Are you mad? Well, there were some pretty great comics this week.
Not only do we have the headline-making issue of All-New X-Men where Iceman comes out as gay, but we’ve also got the unlikely buddy comedy of Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt in the latest issue of Star Wars! This week also brings us, hands down, the funniest comic book I may have ever read in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4.
This comic is pure spun gold.
I have no way to explain why I find Squirrel Girl hilarious but Deadpool flat. I guess that’s just the way my brain is wired. But from the cover to the final page, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a laugh riot! And it’s Comic Book of the Week!
This week also brings us a double dip of Valiant Comics! That’s always a hoot.
Comic Reviews: All-New X-Men #40, Divinity #3, Ninjak #2, Star Wars #4 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4.
