Darkseid’s Daughter is Everything Wrong with Comics Today

Since the very beginning of the New 52 at DC Comics, writer Geoff Johns has been teasing the Darkseid War, an epic battle between the villainous Darkseid and the equally villainous Anti-Monitor. They are two of DC’s biggest bad guys, the sorts of villains who could threaten the entire universe, and Johns is going to send them to war against each other — with the Earth and the Justice League likely caught in the middle. As a comic book fan, that sounds incredibly awesome.

But I cannot abide by the utter garbage that is a key player in this war: Darkseid’s daughter. Introduced this past week in Justice League #40 and DC’s Free Comic Book Day prologue, Darkseid’s daughter is everything that’s wrong with comic books today.

Yes, steal all the Justice League weapons, that’s kewl

Prepare yourself, this is definitely going to be an angry geek ranting about comics on the Internet.

Look at her, just look at her! The very sight of this character makes my skin crawl due to annoyance. Has DC learned nothing from their own success? Does the massive fan support of the new Batgirl comic mean nothing to them? I see this new character and I roll my eyes at how much of a colossal step backwards she is for comic books. It’s not 2011 anymore, DC! And it’s definitely not the 1990s!

If their upcoming summer rebranding is a sign that DC actually has learned a few lessons and is going to change for the better, Darkseid’s daughter is their one last hurrah for idiocy.

And if you need further proof that this character is ridiculous, her name is Grail. Yeah, exactly. She is a work of zero creativity.

Join me after the jump so I can actually explain why I’m ranting at you today.

Gamer Girl & Vixen Kickstarter Launches on May 16!

Save the date! Now that the first issue of Gamer Girl & Vixen is complete, we’re taking this party to Kickstarter on Saturday, May 16! We’re going to raise money to make a second issue of our comic, and then get some print copies into everybody’s hands!

This is exciting! We’ve been working on this comic all year so far, and I’ve been reading everything I can about how to run a successful Kickstarter campaign. We’ve got a great page ready to go, some great art to show off to everybody, and some even cooler rewards to hand out to all our backers.

Hopefully I’ll be able to convince some of you fine Henchies to pledge some money towards my comic. Don’t worry, it’s not a requirement to keep reading this old blog! Just keep in mind that I’m probably going to be talking my head off about my comic once the Kickstarter launches!

As if I’m not doing that already!

Remember to mark your calendars! May 16 is the big day!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/2/15

This is a great weekend for comics! Not only is Avengers: Age of Ultron tearing up the box office (expect my review tomorrow), but it’s also Free Comic Book Day! And my own comic, Gamer Girl & Vixen, is only two weeks away from launching on Kickstarter! What a time to be alive, I tell ya!

Due to my seeing Age of Ultron twice in as many days, my review pile is a little light this week. Well, light in terms of number of issues reviewed. For some reason, I went on a real nitpicky exploration of Batman #40. You might want to skip that one if you don’t want to hear me drone on endlessly about why I don’t care for Scott Snyder’s Joker.

And skip right down to Bitch Planet #4, the Comic Book of the Week! That series is starting to pick up steam!

And watch out when she gets going!

Over at Word of the Nerd, you can check out my review of Fantastic Four #645. It’s being hailed as the final Fantastic Four comic ever, but trust me, it’s not. The comic isn’t even written as a finale. The Fantastic Four will be back as soon as Marvel is done having a beef with FOX Studios.

Comic Reviews: Batman #40, Bitch Planet #4, Princess Leia #3 and Silk #3.

Gamer Girl & Vixen: The First Issue is Complete!

Today is an exciting day, everybody! The first issue of Gamer Girl & Vixen is done! The colors, the lettering, the putting everything together in the right order; it’s all done! I have a comic book! It’s taken a few months of hard work, but it will all be worth it when you and all of our other potential fans of the comic in your hands.

ThatFeeling

Next comes the road to Kickstarter in a little more than two weeks! We’ve got to put a few finishing touches on our Kickstarter campaign, and thanks to the help of some of you wonderful Henchie volunteers — Karen Lin, bblast616, buns134 and Maus Merryjest — we’re going to have a kickass campaign with fair prices and awesome rewards!

In fact, double thanks to Maus for giving my comic a write-up on his Tumblr!

I cannot thank you Henchies enough for following along with this dream project and lending a hand where you can! It’s why I love the Internet.

As always, if you’d like to follow along with further Gamer Girl & Vixen production, just head on over to our website GamerGirlandVixen.com. And I’ll have more information on the Kickstarter as we get close!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/25/15

By this time next week, I will have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron. I can’t wait! The anticipation is nearly overwhelming! What am I supposed to do until then? Read comics?! Are you mad? Well, there were some pretty great comics this week.

Not only do we have the headline-making issue of All-New X-Men where Iceman comes out as gay, but we’ve also got the unlikely buddy comedy of Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt in the latest issue of Star Wars! This week also brings us, hands down, the funniest comic book I may have ever read in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4.

This comic is pure spun gold.

I have no way to explain why I find Squirrel Girl hilarious but Deadpool flat. I guess that’s just the way my brain is wired. But from the cover to the final page, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a laugh riot! And it’s Comic Book of the Week!

This week also brings us a double dip of Valiant Comics! That’s always a hoot.

Comic Reviews: All-New X-Men #40, Divinity #3, Ninjak #2, Star Wars #4 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #4.
