6 Even More Comic Book Captains

What’s the deal with putting the term “Captain” in front of superhero names to make them sound more important? I know Captain America and Captain Marvel started the trend, but what does it even signify? In almost all cases, it’s not a military rank or an honorary title. It might as well be an adjective the way some superheroes use it!

Captains Again List 01

Yarr! Again!

Once upon a time, I wrote a List of Six of a bunch of other famous comic book captains. There were more than enough to fill the list and beyond. And like all good lists, it deserves a second glance, because I’ve found even more comic book characters who randomly added the word ‘Captain’ to their name for no good reason! Perhaps it’s some sort of madness?

Either way, join me after the jump for another smattering of comic book characters with an inflated sense of self importance!

The Valiant Cinematic Universe Begins with Bloodshot!

I’m no fan of Valiant Comics. I’ve read a couple of titles here and there, but none have been able to stick with me. So I’m at least vaguely aware of some of their characters. I for sure know about Bloodshot, and he’s getting a movie!

Two trailers were released today.

The movie looks pretty good. Looks tough, looks like it has some charm. Though you’ll notice that Bloodshot’s iconic look — seen here — doesn’t show up at all in either trailer. I’m all for Vin Diesel, but you’re not even going to show us comic book Bloodshot in the trailers for the Bloodshot movie? Surely we’ve reached a point where studios aren’t afraid to actually show the superhero in the trailer. Granted, they didn’t show Venom in the first Venom trailer…but c’mon! People know Venom. Nobody knows Bloodshot.

But who am I to talk? The Bloodshot movie comes out on Feb. 21. Normally February is a dumping ground for bad movies, but studios have been seeking to reclaim February for years now.

And perhaps Valiant hits this one out of the park! Maybe this will be the start of the Valiant Cinematic Universe! Then we can get movies about X-O Manowar, Harbinger and perhaps even Faith! I would think Faith would be a solid option for a film. Valiant could score some points with a light-hearted flick about a plus-sized superhero. That hasn’t been done before, and Valiant is the one comic company poised to make it work.

We’ll see how all of this shakes out in February!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/19/19

It’s gonna be a short list of reviews this week, henchies, because your buddy is on vacation! And I dunno, I didn’t feel like reading a whole stack of comics, like usual. But I did read a couple, and they were some real dingers.

Look at this list: three comics that pretty much define the entire comic book industry. Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men. No fancy adjectives. No major crossovers. Just simple comics. One is OK, one is terrible and the third, X-Men #1, is pretty darn good. I am still excited for Dawn of X! It gets Comic Book of the Week.

Apes with PhDs 01

The state of X-Men comics at the tail end of 2019

Meanwhile, when I didn’t read the stack of newly released comics, I have been spending my time catching up on larger collections. I read the latest volume of Empowered, and it was a real barn burner! Is anybody else reading Empowered? I want to do a feature post on it someday. And I read through all of Paper Girls now that it’s complete. Really fun story. Also highly recommended.

Comic Reviews: Batman #81, Spider-Man #2 and X-Men #1.

Top 6 Comic Book Grandchildren

We all have grandparents! And hopefully they’re great! My last living grandparent, my maternal grandmother, just turned 100 this past year, and she’s always been great! All of my grandparents were awesome people and loving family.

So how about  list of comic book grandchildren?

Grandchildren List 01

Just imagine all the super-powers they have

I know what you’re thinking: why not a List of Six about comic book grandparents? Because more often than not, those characters who are grandparents have a lot more going on. Being a grandparent is often just an ancillary thing for them. Whereas it’s far more rare to have comic book characters who are notably the grandchildren of already famous comic book characters. Because major characters never age in regular comics, so it’s just not often we get grandchildren.

I’ve managed to track down six comic book characters who are notably the grandchildren of already famous characters! Join me after the jump to see them all!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/12/19

What a great week for comics! I love a week where my favorites all come out at the same time, like Squirrel Girl, Wonder Twins and Go Go Power Rangers! To say nothing of more Gwenpool and the start of a nifty new Doctor Doom comic!

Comic Book of the Week goes, once again, to the big Powers of X/House of X series. The issue itself is really enjoyable, and the way it caps everything off and creates even more promise for the future is phenomenal. This has been a weird relaunch, but an exciting one!

Xavier Lose 01

Don’t look so sad about it

Meanwhile, Event Leviathan is still really good. I’m rather excited about the potential going forward…but I don’t know if this whole event will get wrapped up in the next issue, or if this is indeed the start of a whole new status quo for DC Comics. I suppose we’ll find out! And I’ll probably be fine with either.

Comic Reviews: Doctor Doom #1, Go Go Power Rangers #24, Gwenpool Strikes Back #3, Powers of X #6, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #49 and Wonder Twins #8.
