Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 2/8/20

It’s Birds of Prey weekend! I was trapped in a snowstorm yesterday, so I haven’t seen the film yet, but it’s definitely on my docket for this weekend! And I’ll have my review/thoughts at the usual place on Wednesday! Too bad I didn’t read any Birds of Prey-related comics…

But I did enjoy new issues of Marauders, Lois Lane and Batman! So at least that’s something. Comic Book of the Week goes to the stellar debut of Zeb Wells’ new Ant-Man mini-series! Hilarious and fun all in one!

AntMan Apology 01

Ant-Man is friends to everyone!

Meanwhile, the big X-Men/Fantastic Four Dawn of X crossover kicked off this week and it was fine. The X-Men really come off as jerks…and then the Fantastic Four kind of comic off as jerks. It’s not a good showing for anybody. I feel like the X-Men could handle superhero diplomacy a little better if they really want to solidify their new status quo.

Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #1, Batman #88, Doctor Doom #5, Lois Lane #8, Magnificent Ms. Marvel #12 and Marauders #7.

6 Other Badass Lady Heroes for a Birds of Prey Sequel

The Birds of Prey movie is here! DC Comics has fully abandoned their plans to try and repeat the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and they are instead just knocking out random character movies for the fun of it! We’re getting a legit, live action movie about the Birds of Prey. How cool is that? Granted, it’s built around Harley Quinn, but she was the best part of Suicide Squad so I am 100% OK with this.

Birds of Prey Sequel List 01

It’s movie time!

Margot Robbie said in a recent interview with Nerdist that she decided to make Birds of Prey instead of Gotham City Sirens because she read the comics and realized that Birds of Prey focused on a lot more obscure characters. Gotham City Sirens is Harley teamed up with Catwoman and Poison Ivy, who are both very popular and well-known characters. Whereas Birds of Prey is going to feature Huntress, Black Canary, Cassandra Cain and Rene Montoya! Being a fan of obscure comic book characters, this is an idea I can absolutely get behind! Let’s show off more lesser known badass lady superheroes!

So join me after the jump for six character suggestions I have for a potential Birds of Prey sequel film!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/25/20

Oh man, what a great week for comics! Some of my current favorites came out this week, including phenomenal new issues of Far Sector and Wonder Twins! Those are probably my two favorite DC comics right now.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Moprhin Power Rangers #47 for a great issue that features a moment of real poignancy.

Goldar Suffers 01

Poor Goldar

Meanwhile, BOOM! Studios has decided to cancel Go Go Power Rangers. This is a damn shame, because it’s a great comic. But after the shakeup a couple issues ago, both Go Go and Mighty Morphin are a bit redundant, so this move makes sense.

Comic Reviews: Batman #87, Far Sector #3, Marauders #6, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #47 and Wonder Twins #11.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 1/11/20

Short week for me this week in terms of comic reviews. I was blind-sided by stuff both at work and at home, so I didn’t have much time to read too many comics. Such is life! But we’ve got a new era of Batman to look into and my return to Magnificent Ms. Marvel, as requested by you henchies!

Comic Book of the Week goes to New Mutants #5 for a charming and fun space story. Charming and fun are two of my favorite things in comics.

Hot Lady Bird 01

There have been worse X-Men plots

Meanwhile, I’ve fallen behind on Excalibur and X-Force. I considered getting caught up this week, but like I said, I was pretty busy, and I just couldn’t muster much interest in these comics anymore. I think that’s an overall sign of my thoughts on Dawn of X as a whole…

Comic Reviews: Batman #86, Magnificent Ms. Marvel #11 and New Mutants #5.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/21/19

Holy moly, people! Because Christmas falls on a Wednesday next week, every single comic company is dumping ALL OF THEIR COMICS this week! We’ve got nearly half a dozen Dawn of X comics, along with the likes of Powers Rangers, Runaways, Legion of Super-Heroes and, to top it all off, the finale to Tom King’s Batman saga and the mid-season finale to Dan Slott’s Iron Man! There’s so many comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the final issue of King Thor! Jason Aaron finishes his legendary run with a truly masterful goodbye that’s both exciting and heartfelt. And Thor: God Cop.

Cop of Thunder 01

You know you’d read it

Meanwhile, in non-comic book but otherwise important news, I enjoyed Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. I’ll have my full review and thoughts on Wednesday, but for right now, I liked the movie. Or more precisely, I liked the grand finale with all its crazy big action and solid character moments. It seems I’m a sucker for good, quality Star Wars fan service.

Comic Reviews: Batman #85, Gwenpool Strikes Back #5, King Thor #4, Legion of Superh-Heroes #2, Marauders #4, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #46, New Mutants #4, Runaways #28, Scream: Curse of Carnage #2, Spider-Man #3, and Tony Stark – Iron Man #19.
