Did…Did Tom Taylor Just Marry Himself to Gabby?

Tom Taylor is the writer of All-New Wolverine and X-Men Red, and I’m a really big fan. His biggest contribution so far to the world of the X-Men is the creation of Gabby, the joyful and adorable clone sidekick of X-23. Gabby, also known as Honey Badger, is just plain great. There’s no arguing that point.

But something really weird happened in this week’s issue of All-New Wolverine. I’m not trying to make any judgments here, I just want to run it by you all.

The story takes place in an alternate future, where Gabby is the new Wolverine and Laura is the queen of Madripoor. They’re still the best of sister friends and hang out together. And in doing so, Laura asks Gabby about her family…about Gabby’s husband and kids…

Gabby Taylor 01

You see it, right?

Like, there are no characters named “Taylor” with whom Gabby has had any sort of flirtation or anything of the like. Writer Tom Taylor simply decided that adult Gabby would have an unseen husband and kids, and that this unseen husband would be named “Taylor”.

That’s weird, right? That he named Gabby’s future husband after himself?

Yeah, that’s pretty weird…

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/10/18

I’ve decided to give Gwenpool a try. I had very little use for that weird Gwen Stacy fetish that popped up a couple years ago, but all of the clippings I’ve seen of the Gwenpool comic have seemed pretty amazing. So the first tpb is on order! I’ll let you all know how it goes.

Meanwhile, in regular comic land, it’s a pretty sad week. We must say goodbye to two of my favorites, Hawkeye and Iceman, the latter of which earns Comic Book of the Week! I’ll miss them both!

Iceman Everywhere 01

Ice solves everything

Marvel’s Countdown to Infinity kicked off this week and I couldn’t care even a single iota. I didn’t read the issue and I keep skipping all these single page “Where is Wolverine” bits that show up at the end of comics. Just like Civil War II, this reeks of being a slapped-together event to tie into the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie. I don’t care.

I do care about Kelly Thompson’s Rogue & Gambit mini-series, which remains awesome! I hope they keep her around the X-Men franchise!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/3/18

I’m still over the moon that we’re getting a new Multiple Man comic book. I don’t know much about this Matthew Rosenberg fella, and I’m slightly disappointed that it isn’t me writing the new Multiple Man comic, but you’re can be darn sure I’m going to read it all! And review it right here!

Some pretty solid comics this week, from Detective Comics to Batgirl to a couple more of DC’s new titles. I’d been waiting to check out The Terrifics and it did not disappoint. But Comic Book of the Week goes to All-New Wolverine for a delightfully funny done-in-one issue.

Honey Badger Deadpool 01

Comics are awesome

Speaking of new comics, Marvel has officially announced Nick Spencer as taking over Amazing Spider-Man. I don’t have anything to do with the guy’s Twitter feed or whatever brouhaha erupted during Secret Empire, but I really liked his Ant-Man and Superior Foes comics, so I’m definitely on board for his Amazing Spider-Man.

Comic Reviews: All-New Wolverine #31, Batgirl #20, Detective Comics #975, The Silencer #2 and The Terrifics #1.

Multiple Man Did Not Really Return…Yet…Again

A couple weeks ago, I got super hyped up because the dead Multiple Man made a cameo appearance in Phoenix Resurrection – The Return of Jean Grey. At the time, we didn’t know what these cameos meant and I got my hopes up that Jamie Madrox would finally come back to life!

Well the latest issue explains that all these dead X-Men cameos are just weird manifestations of the Phoenix. At least Multiple Man looks cool in red.

Madrox Maybe Returns 02

It’s at least a close visual proximation

Also, while we’re on the subject, why did they pick Colossus for the one-panel fight against Madrox? Strong Guy, Multiple Man’s best friend, is in that same group of X-Men fighting off these dead Phoenix manifestations. Not that this comic needs to address those characters in any way, but for a single throwaway panel, it would have been nice!

Looks like we go back to waiting for Multiple Man’s eventual return to comics.

In good news, Bleeding Cool ran an article a couple weeks ago about Marvel trademarking the name ‘Multiple Man’, so that’s got to be a good sign!

Also, while we’re on the subject of Phoenix Resurrection – The Return of Jean Grey, I really, really dislike Old Man Logan. He is just such a horrible character inserted into the regular Marvel Universe. It’s like everybody is just pretending he’s regular Logan!

On this page, Young Scott Summers has volunteered to go in and confront the Phoenix. But Old Man Logan talks him out of it for one specific reason:

Old Man Logan Sucks 01

He’s still not wearing a costume!

Are you kidding me?! She’s not your Jean Grey either, you stupid alternate reality character! I know this is being pedantic and nitpicky fanboyish of me, but the fact that everybody keeps treating Old Man Logan like he’s regular Wolverine really sticks in my craw. Did I miss some issue where he tricked everybody into thinking he was regular Wolverine, just really old? Do they not know he’s from an alternate reality?

Gabby Just Got the Best Codename Possible!

I really like All-New Wolverine by Tom Taylor, despite never having had much interest in X-23 as a character. It’s a fun book, with strong comedy and even stronger character writing. I’ve fallen a bit behind in my readings, but it’s still good comics.

The breakout character of the series is Gabby, a little kid clone of X-23. She’s a clone of a clone. But she’s absolutely delightful as a fun, energetic kid getting mixed up in superhero hijinks.

Honey Badger 03

Since debuting at the start of the series, Gabby has been known as simply “Gabby”. But this week’s new issue — All-New Wolverine #28 — finally gives Gabby her own superhero codename! And it’s pretty much perfect!

Join me after the jump for her new name!
