6 Thoughts on The Penguin (Review)
Hoo boy! We have been feasting good on television this year! I had high hopes for The Penguin after we saw the first trailer, and even I couldn’t imagine this show being so purely awesome. This is a Best Show of the Year contender, to be sure!
TV Show Rating: 10/10 – Fantastic
I very much enjoyed The Batman when it came out in 2022 and very much looked forward to expanding that universe. We knew about the Penguin show even back then, but surely none of us could have predicted how great it would be. Now that it’s over, we can bask in just what a good job everyone is doing in this universe and with these Batman characters. This is likely a very different beast than the Batman we’re going to get in the DCU, and that’s fine by me. I can handle a world with multiple different Batman at once.
Join me after the jump for my thoughts and review of the first season of The Penguin. Expect FULL SPOILERS for the entire season. And feel free to share your own thoughts in the comments below.

Today is the last day of San Diego Comic-Con, and I’m sure they’ve got some big news coming out. Will anything top what Marvel Studios revealed last night? Who knows! But DC put out a couple of really awesome trailers I wanted to share. There’s a whole bunch of trailers from the event, but I’m gonna sparse them out.
First up is a new trailer for The Penguin, which still looks like an awesome, gritty crime drama, which is exactly what I want this show to be.
I wish we had more references to Batman in this trailer, because he should be a presence in this movie, but I’ll take what I can get. Cristin Milioti looks awesome of Sophia Falcone, and it sounds like they’re doing a bit of The Hangman storyline. Should be a blast! And Colin Farrell looks crazy good!
The Penguin is coming to Max on Sept. 19.
Then we got the first trailer for Creature Commandos, the animated series that kicks off James Gunn’s new DC Universe! And it looks great, as far as I’m concerned.
Looks fun, looks wacky, looks like what I’d expect Creature Commandos to look like. So I’m jazzed for this show. and I’m jazzed to see some of these characters appear in live action afterwards, like Rick Flagg Sr. joining the second season of Peacemaker. So these are definitely some shows I’m looking forward to watching later this year!
Creature Commandos is coming to Max in December.

Here’s a New Look at that Penguin TV Show (No, the New One)
The Penguin is still coming to Max, now set for a September release. I’m excited. I very much enjoyed The Batman movie and I think it’s a great idea to actually see that spin off into a legitimate TV show. Plus, TV has been making successful and enjoyable crime shows for decades. Surely somebody can take that winning formula and apply it to Gotham City, right?!
I think it looks good. Colin Farrell is obviously going to great lengths to bring this character to life, and he was very entertaining in The Batman. So just apply that to a hopefully gripping, dangerous and exciting crime show and we could have magic happen! And then, hopefully, somebody will just turn Gotham Central into a TV show as well, in the same universe.
And hopefully they won’t be afraid to use Batman, at least a little.
The Penguin comes to Max in September.

TV Trailer Tuesday
This is the most stubborn cold I think I’ve ever had! It just won’t leave my head! I just want my brain back! Thankfully, I can take things a bit easier on this Tuesday, and just share some TV trailers that came around in the past week! I love trailers and I love easy Tuesdays.
First up is a big trailer for the new season of Doctor Who, with the new Doctor.
Looks alright to me! I liked the guy well enough in that Christmas special we saw, so I’m definitely down for watching the new season. I still haven’t watched Jodie Whittaker’s final season and specials. But this is supposed to be a fresh start, and I’m down with that, so we’ll see how it goes!
The new season is coming to Disney+ starting on May 10.
Next up is a great trailer for The Penguin TV show!
That was a great trailer! Granted, it’s basically just a trailer for a crime drama, then breaks that immersion when it reveals the title to be “The Penguin” at the end. Heh. Not very much, or anything at all, in this trailer makes one think Batman vs. Penguin. So I guess we’ll see. I’m all for a new, gritty crime drama, which maybe Batman hiding in the wings? We’ll see!
The Penguin comes to Max in the fall.

The Penguin TV Show At Least Looks Good
This in-production teaser trailer for The Penguin TV show arrived last week, when HBO Max announced the change to their subscription service. I don’t really know what to make of this show yet, but it looks good, at the very least.
Colin Farell obviously disappears into the makeup, as we all know. And the character seems really cool. But what’s this show gonna be? Just the Penguin being a dangerous gangster guy? He doesn’t have a family, and I doubt they’re going to put him in therapy like an obvious Sopranos rip-off. So what’s this show gonna feature? And didn’t we just get a show starring the Penguin? Wasn’t that what Gotham was about? It was half about the Penguin, surely, right?
Anyway, I still think they should have made a Gotham Central TV show. That would have been killer!
