Somebody Thinks Rip Hunter is Better Than Booster Gold

In a case that can only be described as sheer madness, someone out there in TV land has decided that Rip Hunter is a better character than Booster Gold. It makes no sense. But they’ve gone and cast Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter in that upcoming Justice League-esque TV show. This comes soon on the heels of a casting announcement for Hawkgirl.

I wouldn’t mind being type-cast as a time traveller

Rip Hunter is a generic time traveller who debuted in comics in 1959 and had a short-lived comic book series in the early 60s. He’s a handsome, somewhat dashing action hero type who basically just travels around time having adventures. Darvill, of course, was Rory Williams on Doctor Who, so he is no stranger to time travel.

Now, we knew a time traveller was coming to the show because of casting announcements. But like any sane people, we all thought it was going to be Booster Gold, the far far more interesting comic book time traveller. Booster Gold is a washed up football player from the future who steals a time machine and some futuristic technology and comes back in time to be a modern day superhero, using the future tech to make it look like he has super powers. That is a damn good character premise, and Booster Gold has an awesome gold costume.

Rip Hunter is just a dude who maybe wears a jumpsuit from time to time. In no epoch is Rip Hunter a better, more interesting character than Booster Gold. Yet this is the epoch we live in, apparently.

Hawkgirl is Going to Be a Real Thing in that Justice League Show!

Holy wowzers, this is cool news! Remember that live action Justice League-esque show that’s going to spin off from The Flash and Arrow? Well apparently The CW has gone ahead and cast Hawkgirl, of all characters! Hawkgirl is going to exist in the Arrow-verse!

According to Deadline, she’s going to be played by up-and-coming actress Ciara Renee.

She looks like Hawkgirls oughta look

I’ve never heard of her, but Deadline has good things to say. Her character will be Kendra Saunders, and they’re going with the origin that she has been reincarnated several times, and now has wings! She’ll be joining the Atom and Firestorm on this new team show. I say she’s a solid addition. Hawkgirl has always had a lot of momentum behind her since the cartoon days, and seeing her in live action could be pretty cool. The world has definitely figured out how to make big, angel wings look awesome on TV. Just look at Constantine.

6 Things I Would Want in a Justice League TV Show

Rumors and news tidbits have been swirling for a few weeks now that Warner Bros’ next live action superhero show is going to be a team effort. We’ve already heard that Firestorm, Atom and Captain Cold have been tapped to appear (along with Sara Lance, for some reason), and casting notices have teased a few more characters.

Something is definitely in the works. Could it be a live action Justice League TV show?

It’s been done

Considering how much I love Arrow and The Flash, I can’t wait to see what else this DC brain trust can produce! I’m excited for Supergirl and Vixen, and the idea of putting together a ramshackle Justice League TV show sounds pretty amazing. That Flash/Arrow team-up last year was great television. If DC and The CW can turn that energy into a whole TV show, they’ll have another hit on their hands.

They’ll also have a hit if they follow my advice after the jump!

New Vixen Cartoon to Join the Arrow-Verse!

The Arrow-Verse just keeps getting bigger, it seems! Not only has The Flash debuted to strong ratings, and not only are both Supergirl and Teen Titans rumored to be joining, but a new cartoon series starring Vixen has been confirmed for the Fall! The show will air online only, it seems, but both Arrow and Flash will make guest appearances.

They all actually look pretty neat animated

Vixen was announced at the Television Critic’s Association press tour over the weekend, alongside renewals for new seasons of Arrow and The Flash. The cartoon will be about Mari McCabe, the hero with the power to copy the abilities of animals. Vixen can jump like a frog, run like a cheetah or swim like a fish.

Sounds like a solid idea for a new show to me!

So does having the abilities of a bird somehow turn her arms into wings capable of flight?

There are also rumors that The CW might add a new live action TV show starring The Atom. Brandon Routh has been a major guest-star on Arrow this season as Ray Palmer, and he’s going to don his shrinking superhero guise sometime in the latter half of Season 3. Would that make him spin-off worthy? You bet’cha!

My only concern is that the white male is in consideration for a live action TV show, while the black woman is getting relegated to an online cartoon show. What’s the matter, CW? Can only white men star in your live action superhero universe?

Hopefully, at the very least, they hire a real actress so Vixen can guest star on Arrow and The Flash at some point. They definitely need more female members of the off-kilter Justice League they’re building.

This Has Got to Be Some Kind of Trick…

I’m actually a little speechless about this casting news. Not only are we living in a world where both Green Arrow and the Flash have amazing live action TV shows, but we also live in a world that reaches back 20 years and recasts Mark Hamill as the Trickster!

For those who don’t know, Hamill played the supervillain Trickster in the original live action Flash TV show in the early 90s. Don’t believe me? Here’s Youtube!

Actual physical proof that this was a thing in the early 90s!

Well now the forces of the universe have come together to bring Hamill back to play the Trickster again on the new Flash live action TV show on The CW! This is all according to Hitflix.

This is probably the most insane casting news I’ve ever written about for this blog. It defies all expectations of how the universe is supposed to work. We’re not supposed to get nice things! The world isn’t supposed to make such perfect sense!

According to Hitflix, Hamill will play an older Trickster who was locked up in prison a long time ago as a terrorist. He’ll be a Hannibal Lecter-type villain, advising the Flash from inside a prison cell, while a new, younger Trickster tries to play copycat. This actually lines up with the comics, since there really is an older Trickster and a younger Trickster who tried to steal his identity.

Whatever happens, this casting is some amazing news. This is a good day.
