More Arrow Casting, And More Arrow Goodness
Not only has R’as al Ghul been confirmed for Arrow Season 3, but just yesterday they announced the casting of actor Matt Nable. I have no idea who that is, but he’s no Liam Neeson.
I’m perfectly happy with this casting. Like everyone else, I’d probably have preferred that they actually cast someone of R’as’ actual comic book ethnicity, but what do I know? I’m not some big shot Hollywood executive. I’m sure this Nable guy will do a fine job with the role. Arrow is usually pretty awesome when it comes to casting. Plus, how cool is it going to be to have R’as al Ghul on Arrow? That should be all manner of awesome.
And if you needed a reminder of awesomeness, there’s a new trailer for Season 3!
Looks freakin’ fantastic! Cannot wait!

An Arrow Casting and Recasting, But Not the Character We Actually Want
Arrow has been so busy casting new characters for the show that I’ve fallen behind in announcing all of them! Not that I’m required too. It’s not like Arrow is slipping me any money to be the geek blog that announces these castings. And it’s not like I have a secret source in Hollywood that gives me any scoops. Sometimes I just like talking about casting choices. For example, actor Matt Ward has been cast as Komodo, a brand new villain that I think first showed up in GA comics earlier this year. That’s pretty cool. And I think Manhunter, another superhero, was also cast a few weeks ago. It’s getting out of control!
Just announced today is Amy Gumenick cast as Cupid, a character introduced a few years ago, and created by Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.
Should be fun. I don’t know anything about either of them, but awesome nonetheless.
Also announced this week was the recasting of Katana. No longer will she be Devon Aoki from Sin City. Instead, Katana will be played by Rila Fukushima from The Wolverine.
That should also be pretty fun! I liked Rila in The Wolverine.
Unfortunately, despite this flurry of casting, the people at Arrow have yet to cast the one character we’re all dying to see. I’m speaking, of course, about the best new character introduced in the New 52 so far.
Drum roll, please.
Make it happen, Kreisberg!

Holy Cow, Red Arrow Looks Awesome!
Roy Harper is probably going to be called Arsenal in Arrow, but I’ve been a fan of the ‘Red Arrow’ moniker since back when he joined the Justice League, before the bad, cat-related times. I was a huge fan of Roy’s storyline in Season 2, and it looks like it’s going to get even better in Season 3!
That’s an even more badass outfit than what Oliver Queen wears! And it’s much better than the silly red hoodie he wore in the first two seasons. According to Entertainment Weekly, Roy is going to start out Episode 1 in costume, a full member of Team Arrow. That’s badass news for this big time Arrow and Arsenal fan!
Arrow Keeps Piling Them On
At least two more comic book heroes will be joining the TV show Arrow next season: the Atom and Katana! I’m excited to see Arrow continue to give us quality DC cameos, though neither one of them is on my list of hopefuls. The Atom is a pretty big deal, being a solid member of the Justice League. In fact, beyond the Flash and Black Canary, this is our fourth Justice Leaguer in this TV universe. And Katana has a special connection to the Green Arrow in Jeff Lemire’s current comic storyline, The Others. Both represent different weapon clans, the Sword and Arrow clans, respectively. Maybe that will come up, though I kind of doubt it.
The Atom will be played by Brandon Routh.
Routh, of course, both started and stopped his career playing Superman in Superman Returns. Poor guy. He was darn good in the third season of Chuck, and in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. According to the news, Ray Palmer will be the new owner of Queen Consolidated, so he’s gonna be a businessman with a focus on the applied sciences division. Will he be shrinking? Who knows!
Maybe DC is trying to get their shrinking superhero onto screens before Ant-Man next July. You know what…that’s probably exactly it!
Katana will be played by Devon Aoki.
Aoki starred in Sin City as a badass sword-wielding warrior woman, a role she’ll hopefully fill in Arrow too! Apparently she’s going to be a contact of Oliver’s in the Hong Kong flashbacks, though like with Deathstroke, she’ll hopefully show up in the present day too.
I’m perfectly happy with these castings. Arrow is one of my favorite shows right now, and I look forward to more comic book characters popping up! Everyone except Nightwing, though.
6 Thoughts on the Second Season of Arrow
There are almost too many geeky shows on TV these days! It’s like a dream come true. And they’re all mostly good, and few are better than Arrow, which is probably my favorite drama on TV these days. Anybody who complains that it’s just Batman Lite, or too focused on CW-style drama, can just go be haters off in their own little corner. I’ll enjoy my live action Green Arrow TV show. Arrow is an exciting, action-packed superhero drama, which ratcheted up the acting, storytelling and, above all, tension, to make their second season into some truly great TV!
I was lukewarm about season one. I enjoyed it, sure, but it wasn’t the greatest show by any means. But then the team behind Arrow blew me away with the first season finale, and I was definitely coming back for more with season two. Imagine my delight when season two turned out to be amazing! Ollie the superhero, Black Canary, the League of Assassins, the Suicide Squad, the Flash, freakin’ Deathstroke the Terminator! It was all so good!
Join me after the jump for my thoughts/review of Arrow season 2! Be warned, there will be FULL SPOILERS for the whole season.
