The Honest Truth about Captain America: Civil War

Oh Captain America: Civil War, you were the only great thing we had this summer. Honestly.

I watched the movie again just the other day, and it still holds up. Great Spider-Man, great Ant-Man, great everybody. Bring on even more! And lets get Honest Trailers for all of them!

Comic Review: Teen Titans #24

And so we arrive at the end of the Teen Titans in the New 52. It has been an incredible journey, from the heights of potential, to horrendous mediocrity, to these past few limped along months. For reasons that are unknown to me, DC Comics decided to stick with the core team and concept for the New 52 Titans for the entire five year span of the imprint, despite shaking things up pretty much everywhere else at the company. Heck, this comic has even survived past the New 52 itself, with Rebirth all anyone is talking about. Yet we come not to bury Teen Titans, but to honor it.

Because Teen Titans goes out with an issue I always wanted from this series, but never got. In fact, Teen Titans #24 proves there was a good comic hiding in these pages all along.

Comic Review: 7/10 – Good.

But even as we try to say goodbye to Teen Titans, I still get to hang my head and sigh one last time. Because this isn’t really the finale of Teen Titans, it’s an epilogue/tie-in to this week’s Detective Comics #940. So despite everything this comic has done for itself after all these years, despite keeping the core team and concept together all this time, Teen Titans doesn’t actually get to end on its own merits. The finale is just a follow up to another, much better comic. How embarrassing.

I will be spoiling the big news in Detective Comics #940, so don’t read ahead if you don’t want to be spoiled — though I’m not sure why someone would read my review of Teen Titans before reading that phenomenal Detective Comics issue.

Suffice to say, Teen Titans #24 is a series of vignettes as the remaining Titans recall some of their favorite moments with one of their favorite team members. The scenes have real character to them, the sort of character that was almost entirely missing from Teen Titans as a series. If we had anything in the comic even approaching the scenes mentioned in this final issue, Teen Titans could have been pretty good.

Instead, we bid everybody goodbye and will likely speak no more about this version of the Teen Titans. Let’s hope the next people do a better job.

My 6 Favorite Cartoons of All Time (This Week)

I have watched cartoons for my entire life. As a child in the 1980s, I was the perfect target for the glut of toy commercial cartoons that filled the airwaves (and now our movie screens). The ’90s saw not only the rise of Fox Kids and after school cartoons, but also the coming of The Simpsons and prime time animated entertainment. I sat through Nicktoons, Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, and now I’m basking in a golden age of smart, intelligent and often amazing cartoons like BoJack Horseman and Steven Universe.

So through all these long years, which ones are my all-time favorites?

Oh man, remember Dinosaucers?

Oh man, remember Dinosaucers?

By popular demand, I’ve finally sat down and figured out my six favorite cartoon shows of all time — at least for this week. This list is subject to change on a whim, but I think it’s pretty rooted in solid cartoon enjoyment. I had to dig deep on this one, and it pained me to cast some of my favorites into the ‘Honorable Mentions’ at the bottom. But these six are truly some of the greats.

For the sake of my sanity and memory, we’re sticking to television cartoon shows. There are plenty of animated movies and web cartoons that are genius, but we’ll save those for another day, perhaps. And please feel free to share your own favorites in the comments below!

Why Marvel Movies Don’t Have Any Catchy Theme Songs

Can you think of any memorable music from any of the Marvel movies? The fine people at Every Frame a Painting know why!

Personally, I’m a fan of the Avengers theme song, but I suppose that one hasn’t caught on yet. I can’t play it by ear, but I know it when I hear it. This is a pretty fascinating video. I can honestly say I don’t think about music very much, especially in movies. Though I’m also easily susceptible to being emotionally manipulated in a film with the right musical cue.

And it is kind of sad that none of the Marvel superheroes have their own little theme song. It could be played when they appear on screen!

Today is Just Gonna Be All About Ghost Rider, Apparently

I hadn’t planned it this way, but I guess today is all about showing off the upcoming Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Though this picture doesn’t look as cool as his flaming car.

He's giving us all the Penance Stare right now

He’s giving us all the Penance Stare right now

Hopefully the skull face looks a little better in action or when it’s not looking straight on directly at us. But hey, he looks like Ghost Rider, and it sounds like they’re gonna stay true to the character. What more could we ask for? Ghost Rider is gonna be in a TV show! And not his own show. A live action Ghost Rider is guest starring on a regular TV show, because that’s what gets to happen nowadays!
