Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/9/18

Happy Comic-Con season everybody! If you’re reading this, I am likely at Flower City Comic-Con in Rochester, NY, promoting Gamer Girl & Vixen! It’s the biggest convention I’ve tabled at solo, so hopefully I’m having fun and selling comics! Next month I’ll be in Syracuse.

We had some really solid comics out this week, which is always a hoot. For the first time in a long time, I find myself reviewing both the main Batman and main Superman comics in the same week. That’s pretty neat! We’ve also got new Power Rangers, Hulk and that Dazzler one-shot we were all excited about.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Justice League #1 for a far out and freaky debut issue!

Martian Dragon 01

Even as a dragon, he wears his suspenders

Meanwhile, DC is also putting out some one-shots of Bat-Family characters reacting to the upcoming wedding. I flipped through the Nightwing vs. Hush issue and was disappointed to discover that Batman chose Superman to be his best man over Dick. Batman and Robin is legend, man! How is that not the most obvious thing?

Also, they explain that Batman and Catwoman are getting married, but not Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle. That’s weird as hell.

Comic Reviews: Batman #48, Dazzler X-Song #1, Go Go Power Rangers #10, Justice League #1, Immortal Hulk #1 and Man of Steel #2.

Holy Guacamole! Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Trailer Astounds!

At this point in the superhero movie landscape, I think it’s safe to be completely skeptical of anything SONY might be doing on their own for Spider-Man. But the teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looked amazing, and now the full-length trailer looks just as spectacular!

The hype is real. Here’s hoping SONY can pull it off! They even make the alternate reality Miles Morales stuff make some sense!

The animation also looks superb! And the comedy quite funny. This movie looks damn good!

The film debuts in December.

The Top 6 Big Animal People in Comics

Animals are a popular, reoccurring theme in superhero comics. Batman and Spider-Man are two of the most popular fictional characters ever. And they’re just at the tippy top! We’ve also got Ant-Man, Blue Beetle, the Porcupine, Robin, and a host of many, many others.

Then there’s the special class of animal-themed characters who are basically just a giant, humanoid version of an animal! This list is about them!

Big Animal List 01

Honorable Mention

Sometimes it’s a normal person in a big, themed costume. And sometimes it’s a normal person transformed into a beastly monster animal. Either way, giant humanoid animal characters are all over comics! Most of the times they’re villains. As if big humanoid animal people can’t be heroes! Either way, I’ve ranked them and put together a list of the best ones! For fun and profit!

Oh For the Love Of…Another Movie Trailer! Mortal Engines!

I didn’t think Ocean’s 8 was that big of a release this weekend, but we’re getting a bajillion movie trailers this week! Or maybe they’re all preparing to go in front of The Incredibles 2 next week? Or Jurassic World in a few weeks? I dunno!

But here’s the first full trailer for Mortal Engines!

Man, that sucked!

Way to kill all the excitement engineered from the first teaser trailer.

I don’t know anything about Mortal Engines. I don’t know if it’s from a book, a comic or the fevered brain of Peter Jackson directly. All I know is that the teaser trailer was insanely cool! Giant motorized cities cruising around the apocalypse having mobile war? It looked amazing! I’d never seen anything like it!

But you know what I have seen before? About 95% of this dumb new trailer.

Are you kidding me with this? You have this crazy original visual to play with and show off, but your trailer is standard stock sequences of Hugo Weaving and vaguely attractive young people standing around in metal  hallways debating blah blah blah?!

I realize the movie doesn’t come out until December, and therefore a lot of the CGI probably isn’t finished, but show us something! This movie will live or die on its awesome visuals, and after this trailer, it looks pretty dead to me!

Mortal Engines, show us what you got!

The first LEGO Movie 2 Trailer Has Landed!

Here is the real trailer I wanted to share today! The first trailer/look at The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part! And it looks great!

The first The LEGO Movie was a true masterpiece, as far as I’m concerned. That movie reached me in ways most movies and entertainment don’t anymore. The LEGO Movie touched me.

So I am very, very excited for the sequel! The movie looks nifty. The Mad Max-style stuff looks great, and it appears we’re going into outer space to meet another sub-brand of LEGO! Should be fun.

It’ll hit theaters in February 2019!
