Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/23/22
Guess what? We’re back with more comics! And in the middle of San Diego Comic Con no less! Lots of exciting news coming out of Comic Con, with hopefully even more today. I’m hoping for the announcement of the New/Dark Avengers and Marvel recreates that stage scene, only now we have all these off-shoots and bad guys taking the stage. That’ll be fun! As for comics, we’ve got some hits and some misses this week.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Dark Spaces: Wildfire #1 from IDW, the launch of a new and interesting heist comic by writer Scott Snyder. I’m branching out this week.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t bring myself to read the first issue of Judgement Day, nor am I getting into Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths. I just don’t think I have the energy to read Big Event comics anymore. At the very least, For All Mankind on AppleTV+ is another banger of a show! And let this be the first place I mention it: I finally got off my butt and scripted the first issue of a new, original comic series! Hopefully I’ll share more with you all in the future!
Comic Reviews: Dark Spaces: Wildfire #1, Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #4, Jurassic League #3, Nightwing #94 and She-Hulk #5.

Groot is awesome. We can all agree on that. Well he’s going to star in his own series of animated shorts this fall, called I Am Groot. We’re known about the show for a while, and no we’ve got the first trailer, courtesy of San Diego Comic Con.
And I think it looks great. I’m no elitist. I will gladly accept any and all content Marvel wishes to give me. It doesn’t take a lot to make me happy when it comes to this stuff. And this looks adorable and fun. My life can support watching a couple of neat little cartoon shorts about Groot. Bring them on!
Five original shorts are going to start up on Disney+ on Aug. 10.

Let’s Kick Off Comic Con with a Dungeons & Dragons Movie Trailer
San Diego Comic Con has arrived, and lots of new trailers and news is expected. First up is the announcement trailer for the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. This looks interesting, but also kinda not good?
The effects look good. The cast seems great. I like the whole feel of it. But this trailer also doesn’t look all that impressive. Bad movies can still look great in the trailers. But it’s definitely exciting, and seems to be having plenty of fun with the Dungeons & Dragons worlds and concepts. So yeah, bring it on!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is due in theaters in March 2023.

House of the Dragon is Also Trying Really Hard
We got a full trailer for the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off called House of Dragons. It’s a big, epic adventure trailer full of dragons and knights and all sorts of madness. And I think this trailer and this entire show is trying too hard.
Honestly, I consider House of the Dragon the same way I consider The Rings of Power: some TV studio is clinging to a popular franchise too hard and is hoping desperately they can somehow make a successful prequel spin-off show by throwing money at it. But neither trailer has provided much of a look at the actual story or what we’re supposed to care about. Why are they prequels? How is that going to be a good idea?
Can money make a show? Look. I am one of the few people in the world who liked and is content with the Game of Thrones finale. Come at me. But as much as we all enjoyed that show, do any of us really care about this prequel series? About the ancient history of the Targaryen family and their dragons?
I think both House of the Dragon and The Rings of Power are both going to equally and simultaneously crash and burn.

6 Thoughts on Ms. Marvel (Review)
Kamala Khan has arrived on our television screens and the Ms. Marvel show was everything I could have wanted and more! I’ve been a champion of the character since she was first announced in comics, and I couldn’t be happier at how well this character was actually received and how popular she’s become. And I’m so glad her TV show was amazing.
TV Show Rating: 10/10 – Fantastic
This might be my new favorite Marvel Cinematic Universe TV show. Pretty much every aspect of this show was perfect — and a perfect translation from the comics. The showrunners captured that wonderful Kamala Khan dynamic directly from the page, and infused the series with joy, energy and wonderful character development. They got the family right. They got the religion right. They may have crammed a bit too much into just six episodes, but that’s not a dealbreaker.
Join me after the jump for my thoughts and full review of the Ms. Marvel TV show! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the show. And feel free to share your own thoughts in the comments!
