Next Generation Pokemon Games Announced!

The next generation of Pokemon games were unveiled today for the 3DS. That means I have until they’re released in October to buy a 3DS if I want to play. They’re going to be called Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, and it looks like the gameplay is getting a complete overhaul. Check it out!

That looks really cool. The battles look more like the 3D Pokemon Stadium. And the gameplay appears to be doing away with the traditional bird’s eye view role-playing style, replacing it with a closer, possibly more involved look. I have to say that I definitely approve of this new look. The animation looks rather blocky, akin to early Playstation graphics, but it might actually work for a Pokemon game. Just think of what it could do for environments. Rather than just walking around on a green background to denote grass or a white background to denote snow, this new game may actually look like we’re hunting pokemon in a deep forest or on an Arctic glacier. That would be pretty awesome.

Sadly, I don’t have a 3DS. I’d steal my brother’s, but apparently he’s big into pokemon as well. So if I want to play Pokmeon X and Y, I’m gonna have to shell out the big bucks for one of those things. I haven’t missed a new pokemon game yet. Heck, I even bought my DS just so that I could play Pokemon Pearl and Diamond. So I better start saving my pennies.

Check out those new starter pokemon.

Grass chipmunk, fire fox and water frog

We’ve got odd-looking grass chipmunk named Chespin, Vulpix-wannabe fire fox named Fennekin and old man-looking water frog named Froakie. None of them look particularly interesting to me so far, and I’ll probably wait until I see their evolutions before deciding which one I’d pick. But based on just their first stages…I’d pick Froakie. Having a frog starter would make me the Neville Longbottom of the pokemon world. And it’d be my first water starter since Totodile in Pokemon Silver. Should be fun!

What do you guys think? Which starter would you choose?

What’s Jay Up to Nowadays?

Jason Mewes – of Jay and Silent Bob fame – will be starring later this month in a movie about competitive video gaming called Noobz…which I’m pretty sure is supposed to sound like ‘boobs’. And if that’s what they were going for, they definitely succeeded.

The movie will be released in theaters on Jan. 25, with January being the typical dumping grounds for bad movies. I don’t expect it to be any good, it’s just nice to know that Jason Mewes is still getting work, plus the game appears to be about a Gears of War tournament. My friends and I used to play Gears of War online all the time. We were semi-good, and it was a blast. So maybe this will be some kind of guilty pleasure movie.

And judging by the poster, they were definitely going for ‘boobs’.

And why shouldn’t they?

A Year in Video Games: 2012

I don’t do any yearly wrap-ups because my memory is as bad as an elephant with a learning disability. I can’t even remember all the new games I tried in the past year. Fortunately, people like Gamestain are around to help me remember.

What were your favorite games in 2012? I think Assassin’s Creed 3 was my favorite overall game. I didn’t particularly care for Resident Evil 6, and I barely played Mass Effect 3 for reasons I still don’t understand. I mean, seriously, I played and loved the first two games, but I barely even started 3. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.

I’m loving Mists of Pandaria for World of Warcraft, though it’s recently been overshadowed by some great games. The Walking Dead by Telltale Games was amazing…until it crashed when I tried to launch the fifth chapter and corrupted my save file. Now I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to finish. Scribblenauts Unlimited is a blast. And I’m currently playing Pokemon Black 2 and WWE 13 with my girlfriend. Remind me to tell you guys someday about Super Clown!

So what were your favorite video games in 2012? And what are you looking forward to most in 2013?

6 Most Badass Elves in Pop Culture

Christmas is right around the corner (and Hannukah just ended), so what better time to talk about elves? I mean, what time of the year do you most talk about elves? That’s what I thought. There are many kinds of elves in pop culture. You have your Christmas elves, your high elves, your house elves, your night elves, your dark elves, your cookie elves, your wood elves, your cereal elves; all manner of elf in every shape, size and dainty color. But don’t let their delicate features or diminutive size fool you. Elves can be quite badass.

He did win Salesman of the Year that one time

So for Christmas this year, let’s take a look at the 6 most badass elves in pop culture! And I hope everybody has a Merry Christmas!

The Stick of Truth Will Warp Our Fragile Little Minds

Oh my God, you guys. I missed this during Assassin’s Creed Week, but this trailer is too damn good! It’s an actual gameplay trailer for the upcoming South Park RPG Stick of Truth!

The game looks incredible! It looks exactly like the show. To hell with all those old South Park games that tried to turn them into 3D computer animated characters. That was garbage, this is awesome. Just look at all those awesome South Park Easter Eggs and references to the show. This game is making me drool. A fantasy-based South Park RPG. Oh man, oh man.
