Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/27/17

Happy last comic reviews of the year, everybody! The horrible year of 2017 is almost over, leading into possibly the even worse 2018! There’s only one way to find out! I had a pretty solid 2017, to be honest. I published a graphic novel. I gave online dating a try. And I paid off my car a couple months early. Not too bad.

It’s another weird week of not having any Marvel comics to review. As a Marvel Zombie, I do find that weird. I’m also beginning to realize that the only DC comics I read involve the Bat-Family. I need to work on that. But for now, I’ll enjoy stuff like Detective Comics, which wins Comic Book of the Week!

A solid Batman strategy

Normally I would use this space to talk about the latest Big Event, but then I remembered that I decided to actually review Doomsday Clock like a normal comic. I’m slightly regretting that at the moment. Over at Marvel, I skipped the resurrection of Jean Grey because I largely don’t care.

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #18, Detective Comics #971, Doomsday Clock #2 and Go Go Power Rangers #5.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/23/17

This was not a great week to be a comic book fan! Don’t get me wrong, there were a lot of good comics this week, but there was a flood of cancellations are Marvel. Both Iceman and Hawkeye, two of my favorite Marvel comics, are getting the ax by March! That’s disappointing. But I’m used to good comics getting cancelled these days. It’s the nature of the business.

Fortunately, we’ve got some solid, non-cancelled comics this week! Ms. Marvel is back, and if we ignore the renumbering, we’re apparently at the 44th issue! That’s practically a record for a new comic in this day and age! And it’s still a great series! But Comic Book of the Week goes to an absolutely fabulous issue of Tom King’s Batman, with a focus on his friendship with Superman!

Batman, a short story

This week also saw the release of the latest issue of DC’s big Metal event. I can’t say as how I’m a fan. It’s a big, crazy mess of insanity, with a scope that I don’t think the book is handling well. Batman and Superman literally visit the forge of all creation in this issue. It’s nuts! Maybe this story would feel stronger if continuity mattered anymore, but Metal seems to be rewriting DC continuity on the fly to fit its story.

Comic Reviews: Batman #37, Harley Quinn #33, Marvel Two-in-One #1, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #22, Mighty Thor #702, Ms. Marvel #25 and Nightwing #35.

6 Thoughts on Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Like the coming of the tide and the dawning of the sun, another Star Wars movie is upon us! Unlike last year’s Rogue One spin-off, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is part of the main franchise! It’s Episode VIII! That’s pretty cool, right? That means this movie is super important and cool!

Movie Rating: 7/10 – Good.

I liked The Last Jedi, but I wasn’t blown away. I don’t consider it the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back. I think The Last Jedi was a fun and resounding adventure film, with plenty of cool Star Wars stuff, but nothing really beyond that. It’s the sort of movie you super enjoy while watching, but once you start thinking about it, there was a lot wrong with the movie. I know a lot of these complaints have been making the rounds all over the Internet, but now you can read my take on them!

So join me after the jump for my full review of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as well as plenty of long-winded rants about the stuff that bugged me! And expect FULL SPOILERS for The Last Jedi.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/16/17

Happy Star Wars weekend, everybody! Have you seen The Last Jedi yet? That seems to be the big how-do-you-do around here. I saw it a couple nights ago and enjoyed it, though I have plenty of reservations and nitpicks. I’ll share everything on Wednesday!

For now, how about some enjoyable comics? A lot of my favorites came out this week, from Detective Comics to Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! But, and kind of against my better judgement, I’m going to give Comic Book of the Week to Mister Miracle #5. This comic is such a mind-blower! But damn if it doesn’t get me thinking and enjoying good comics.

Decisions, decisions

I missed reviews last week because I was out-of-state on an awesome vacation. And it’s a real shame, because there were some excellent issues of some of my favorite comics! Both Hawkeye and Iceman were great, as usual, but holy cow, I missed a great issue of Batman! I thought the last few issues starring Catwoman were already amazing, but Tom King’s take on Batman and Superman was mind-blowingly amazing! The issue would have been a perfect 10/10 it was just so much fun to read!

Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #970, Mister Miracle #5, Runaways #4 and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #27.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/2/17

Bad news, everybody! Or, well, good news for me! I’ll be on vacation this upcoming week, making my first trip to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida! Should be a blast! But I’ll be gone all week and won’t have time to pick up or read any comic books. So for only the second time since I started doing these weekly reviews, I’m gonna have to skip a week. Sorry!

And this week is such an odd one, since it’s a Fifth Wednesday and there aren’t many comics out — at least not many comics that I’m reading. A nice Batman Annual from Tom King easily wins Comic Book of the Week, but it’s only competition (at least on my read pile) was a Darkhawk one-shot. I had a lot of hopes for that single issue, but King’s Batman can’t be beat.

True love

Not much else in comic book news on my end. No Big Events this week. But boy howdy, how about that Avengers: Infinity War trailer? More of that, please!

Comic Reviews: Batman Annual #2 and Darkhawk #51.
