Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/26/23
Some weeks you just don’t want to read comics. Sometimes a bunch of new comics come out, but you can’t work up the energy to read any of them, especially not when immersed in some Baldur’s Gate 3. But I for sure checked out the Captain America Finale, for one.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #111 because the new storyline kicks off in dramatic, exciting fashion.
Meanwhile, I am definitely still playing Baldur’s Gate 3, though the bugs are starting to get to me. Some are directly impacting one of my playthroughs, and the internet tells me it gets a bit buggier towards the end. I’m starting to wonder if I should just stop playing and wait another year for the Definitive Edition that’s likely to come out. At least I can watch and enjoy the new Ahsoka show! Which reminds me, I have yet to play that new Jedi game that came out in the spring…
Comic Reviews: Captain America: Finale and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #111.

As could have been predicted, the Blue Beetle movie is not doing well at the box office. The general public has turned against DC superhero movies, and even when they’re good — like Blue Beetle — they still flop. It’s a damn shame, because I really enjoyed this new superhero movie. It’s not perfect, but I had a fun time at the theater.
Movie Rating: 8/10 – Very Good
Blue Beetle has had an odd journey to the big screen. There have been rumors and test footage for a show for years, all with this modern costume, but they never materialized beyond an episode appearance on Smallville, I think? Then they greenlit this movie for HBO Max, then decided it was so good that it would go to the big screen, then decided to ditch the old DC movie universe and start fresh, then decided that Blue Beetle would be the first movie in the new DCU without actually being made by the DCU people. It’s been wild! And here we are!

Welp, back to the daily grind. No more New York City. No more bruises from the trip. Just a week of nice, normal comics, like Hawkgirl and Uncanny Avengers.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Void Rivals #3 for another enjoyable little chapter in this space saga.
Meanwhile, still enjoying Baldur’s Gate 3. I’ve got a couple of games running and am very much enjoying myself with the game. I also really enjoyed the Blue Beetle movie and I’ll be disappointed if/when it bombs. We’ll see.
Comic Reviews: Hawkgirl #2, Uncanny Avengers #1 and Void Rivals #3.

If you’re reading this when it posts on Saturday, I should be in New York City visiting Flame Con, the world’s premiere LGBTQ+ comic book convention! I’m going to meet the artist on my next Gamer Girl & Vixen graphic novel. I’ll have more to share about that soon, but it’s her first time on the East Coast, and it makes for a nice day trip for me!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Superman Annual #1 for a whole and hearty issue that does a lot with the ongoing story, while setting up even more! I don’t know if I’ve ever been this excited about Lobo.
Meanwhile, Baldur’s Gate 3 proceeds in spectacular fashion. I’ve currently got three games going, a co-op game with a friend where I’m a wild magic sorcerer, a solo game where I’m a heroic half-orc bard and a third game where I’m going to try to be evil. I normally hate being evil in games, but the evil route seems to have a lot of interesting differences.
Comic Reviews: Avengers #4, Immortal X-Men #14 and Superman Annual #1.

I’m a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I was born in 1983 and the classic Ninja Turtles cartoon came out in 1987, so I was the perfect age to get hooked for life to those super fun adventures and all those collectible toys. I’ve caught most or some of every Turtles adaptation since, though even I haven’t been able to keep up completely. Still, I am fully on board with TMNT: Mutant Mayhem and everything it has to offer.
Movie Rating: 9/10 – Great
I have been very excited for this film since it was first announced. Seth Rogen is using his power in Hollywood for awesome adaptations, from Preacher to Invincible to now a really great take on the Turtles. And then we got some trailers, met the characters and now we’ve seen the flick. It was marvelous, and a great new take on this beloved franchise. Mutant Mayhem is one of the best movies of the year, hands down, and I hope it drives Turtles content for years to come.
Maybe it’ll get me to finally start reading all those IDW hardcover Turtles comics I keep buying…
