Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/18/15

Ant-Man was awesome! I loved it! After all these years, I got to sit down in a theater and watch Ant-Man, and it lived up to all the glorious hype! Go see it! I’ll try to have my full review up later today.

As for comic books, we’ve got a great smattering of books this week. Comics like Kaijumax and Black Canary continue to impress, while Secret Six finally starts to feel like the old, beloved comic of yore. That’s a damn good thing. Lumberjanes and Harley Quinn continue their hot streaks, but there can be only one Comic Book of the Week.

Hawkeye #22 finally finishes off Matt Fraction’s now-legendary run!

That comic is all style, substance and so much more. I need to start buying those trades ASAP so I can sit down and re-read the whole thing over again.

Over at Word of the Nerd, I continue my Secret Wars coverage with a review of Captain Britain and the Mighty Defenders #1. I was attracted to the comic because I’m a huge Faiza Hussain fan, but other than a spotlight for her awesomeness, the comic is middling at best — though if you’re a fan of Judge Dredd, it’s not to be missed.

Comic Reviews: Black Canary #2, Harley Quinn #18, Hawkeye #22, Kaijumax #4, Lumberjanes #16, Robin: Son of Batman #2, Secret Six #4 and Silver Surfer #13.

Learn Everything There is to Learn About Ant-Man!

I’m gonna see Ant-Man soon! I’m so excited! I’ve been waiting for this movie for forever, and I hope it lives up to all of my hopes and dreams. But until then, let’s check out this fun superhero infographic, created by Halloweencostumes.com. Though it might be a little too confusing for people who don’t already know everything there is to know about Ant-Man, like me!

First Official Look at Apocalypse is Underwhelming and Blue

That great bastion of superhero reveals, Entertainment Weekly, has launched their cover piece on X-Men: Apocalypse, revealing the first official look at the titular villain. He’s big, he’s blue, but he’s also…underwhelming. Apocalypse has always been largely defined by his looks, especially that blue-lipped mug of his. But they’ve apparently decided to forgo those iconic lips for a normal, ordinary face.

I curse the god of Photoshop!

Magneto and Psylocke look pretty awesome, but Apoclaypse looks like a dude who doesn’t want to be in that picture.

Where’s the epic chin? Where’s the power and demeanor? What makes this guy so special? Ah, whatever, it’ll probably still be a good movie.

And if you want to see and learn more, you can check out this article in Entertainment Weekly for some plot info, and click here for some other hi-def pics. I’m only slightly disappointed that Multiple Man isn’t going to be in this one. He’ll get his due one of these days.

Oh, and I’ve posted the full magazine cover after the jump!

From One Red Ninja to Another, Elodie Yung Cast as Elektra in Daredevil Season 2

Looks like at least one of the things on my list for Daredevil season 2 is coming true: Elektra is going to show up! Actor Elodie Yung has been cast as the femme fatale ninja, which is actually kind of ironic, considering she played Jinx in the last G.I. Joe movie.

So basically, Yung is going from one red-clad ninja to another red-clad ninja. I think she’s being typecast.

There has been worse typecasting

I don’t remember her from the last G.I. Joe movie, but I think Jinx was cool in that flick. So hey, by all means, bring her aboard! I’m still hoping to see Bullseye, though. Daredevil, Punisher and Elektra teaming up to take on Bullseye, who’s probably working for the Kingpin? Sounds like an awesome season to me!

The 6 Characters on My X-Men Team

Welcome to Comic-Con Week! The party is rocking down in San Diego, but here I am still shuffling around Central New York. Such is my lot and life, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have some comic book fun! In what’s becoming an annual tradition for Henchman-4-Hire, I’ve decided to spend Comic-Con Week playing one of my favorite games: superhero dream team!

If I was hired to write the X-Men, which characters would I choose for my team? Last year, I did the Justice League, and the year before that it was the Avengers. I’ve also done X-Force, the Fearless Defenders, the Teen Titans and the Sinister Six. But this year, it’s the X-Men!

Maybe you’ve heard of them (and if so, remind Marvel that they exist)

This is a very open-ended proposition, considering how many X-Men teams and squads there have been over the years. Once upon a time, team membership was sacred, but now every single change in writer brings on a new lineup, not to mention all the different X-titles available. There are already dozens of lineups in continuity, so what difference would mine make? Good question! Just trust me when I say it would be an awesome, super fun comic!

Join me after the jump to check out my roster. And please join me in the comments to pick your own! I’d love to hear your ideas.
