Review: Teen Titans #7
Holy crap, does this issue suck. I have rolled my eyes at this comic’s various flaws before, but suddenly they’ve come together in a massive, brain-straining menagerie of winded dialogue, cringe-worthy banter, twists that fall pathetically flat, sudden changes in story that come out of nowhere, and the seemingly random and awkward introductions of several new, never-before-seen villains. What had been a relatively tightly paced series has suddenly exploded into a nearly incomprehensible mess.
And it definitely doesn’t help that half the story takes place in an issue of Superboy that hasn’t even come out yet.
Comic rating: 1/5: Terrible!
Everything Teen Titans has been building towards just seems to fall apart with this issue. The only saving grace, perhaps, is the teamwork between the Titans. But their battle against N.O.W.H.E.R.E. just collapses in a big mess as the Titans attack their foes at their evil lair. Whereas before, N.O.W.H.E.R.E. was just a general evil organization, we’re now all of a sudden introduced to various super-villains with names and powers. Their appearances mean nothing because we’ve never seen them before. So the fights with the Titans mean squat. Not to mention the fact that the fights last only a page or two.
But worst of all is the dialogue. Characters not only talk too damn much, but they explain things that are happening in the same panel, as if we didn’t understand. The Titans are also constantly trying to tell jokes, but all of them fall thuddeningly flat.
Join me after the jump as I tear this comic book a new one.
Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman Ain’t the Only Superheroes in Town
Who knew superheroes could be so self-conscious? But even the likes of Aquaman and Plastic Man deserve some time in the spotlight, right? Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman just hog it all. They’re not Super Friends at all, more like Super Jerks! This MAD cartoon parody is simply splendiforous! The superheroes of the DC Universe can really put on a good song and dance when they’re properly motivated.
Nifty Superhero Redesigns
I’ve praised the awesomeness of Project Rooftop before, but I feel like doing it again today. Project Rooftop is this nifty artist site where people submit high-quality redesigns of popular superheros and their costumes. I love this type of art, because it looks cool, is often very creative and it’s about superheroes. What’s not to love?
Hopefully you’ll be an entertained as I am.
First up is this cool Catwoman design by artist Erica Henderson. It’s got a cool Scott Pilgrim vibe to it.
Next we have some personal favorites of mine, the Wonder Twins! I love the hell out of these characters, and not just ironically. The Wonder Twins are just neat, and part of that is their goofy origins with the Super Friends. But did you know that the Wonder Twins eventually appeared in the actual comics? In the mid-90s, they made the jump from the cartoon to the actual, in-canon comics during a series call Extreme Justice. Yep, it was the 90s alright.
This picture, making the pair look rather alien and badass, is drawn by artist Andrew Trabbold.
Finally we have what may be one of the snazziest superhero costume redesigns I have ever seen: Steampunk Scientist Ant-Man! This comes from artist George Kambadais, who drew a whole line up of Avengers. But this Ant-Man is above and beyond the call of phenomenal. I love the labcoat-esque shirt that buttons up to the neck. I love that it’s not tucked in. And I love the knee-high boots with the pants tucked in. This costume is just a brilliant design.
6 Super-Villains That I Want to See On the Big Screen
The best superhero movies are also the ones with the best villains. Would Spider-Man 2 have been so great had Doctor Octopus not been such a sympathetic and tragic character? All four X-Men movies have given Magneto a starring role, and for good reason. And the late Heath Ledger redefined the Joker with his incredible, Oscar-winning performance. The superheroes may be the stars of the flick, but a great super-villain can easily steal the show!
There have been some fantastic super-villains on the big screen. From General Zod’s immortal demand that Superman “KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!” in Superman 2, to the gregarious Loki pulling double-duty as the villain in both Thor and The Avengers. But being the notorious comic book geek that I am, I know of many classic and fantastic super-villains who have yet to see any motion picture love. So here is my list of 6 super-villains who have never appeared in feature films before, but definitely should!
CGI Green Lantern No Longer Looks Like Crap
Instead, it looks like an exciting cartoon series that will feature multiple aspects of the various multi-colored Lantern Corps. This clip came out of Wondercon this weekend, and not only does it feature Hal Jordon doing his Green Lantern thing, but we’ve got Red Lanterns, Star Sapphires and Saint Walker of the Blue Lantern Corps.
Oh man oh man, does Saint Walker look absolutely zen-badass!
