I Need to Stop Getting My Hopes Up With X-Men Rosters

If you haven’t heard yet, the original Jean Grey is going to come back from the dead next month. I have no real opinions on this turn of events. For one, characters coming back from the dead in comics is second nature, especially with the X-Men. For two, I’ve never cared about Jean Grey. Was she ever her own person? Can anybody tell me any personality traits or character trivia that is specific to the original Jean Grey that warrants her coming back?

Anyway, once Jean is back, she’s going to star in a new X-Men team book called X-Men: Red, to go along with the Blue and Gold books already seeing print. Why does the X-Men line need another team book? I dunno.

The important thing is, the reason I’m writing this post, is because Marvel once again did a big, day-long tease about what random X-characters would be on the X-Men: Red roster. As if the lineup matters.

And me, being a fool, got my hopes up that one of my favorite characters would be on the team. But none of them are.

XMenRed 01

Let’s see. We’ve got Jean Grey, obviously. She’s joined by Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Gabby, Namor, Gentle and new character Trinary, which is a really dumb name. The book will be written by Tom Taylor, with art by Mahmud Asrar. I like both of those creators, so I’ll probably pick up the first few issues, especially since Tom Taylor bringing both Laura and Gabby to an X-Men team sounds like fun!

But suffice to say, I don’t care about any of the other team members, especially after getting my hopes up. In fact, I kind of hate the fact that Marvel is putting Prince Namor back on an X-Men team. That is a personal comic book pet peeve of mine. He does not belong there.

In the end, this is just another example of what I’ve come to dub the X-Men Assembly Line. Slap together a new title made of adjectives and cobble together a roster of seemingly randomly selected X-characters. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum. Hopefully, someday, characters like Multiple Man, Mimic or Strong Guy will get to be randomly chosen! I’ll even take Maggott.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/11/17

We’re less than a week away from the Justice League movie! Will it be terrible? Can a third weekend of Thor: Ragnarok defeat it at the box office? I kind of hope so! To celebrate, lets read some Batman, Mister Miracle, Ms. Marvel and Runaways comics!

Comic Book of the Week goes to the latest issue of Harley Quinn! The creative team really delivers a stunning cliffhanger to take us into the final issues. It’s exactly what this comic needed!

Harley Army 01

So are they all stacked up on top of each other?

I also highly recommend checking out this week’s issue of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl! I didn’t review the issue because it’s a smattering of short vignettes, possibly done to raise money for a charity? It’s hard to tell, but the stories are delightful!

Comic Review: Detective Comics #968, Harley Quinn #31, Mister Miracle #4, Ms. Marvel #24 and Runaways #3.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/4/17

I’m surprised they don’t have an issue of Mighty Thor on the stands this week. The big #700 issue dropped two weeks ago, but the big Thor: Ragnarok movie event is this weekend! And it’s a great movie! A ton of fun! I’ll be sharing my thoughts on Wednesday.

For now, how about a couple of comics? It was a very light week for me this week, with new issues of Iceman and Iron Fist, alongside the newly returned Captain America. Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman for another stellar issue in Tom King’s ongoing Catwoman romance storyline.

Bat Cat 01

Trouble in paradise already

I gave Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man one more chance this week, with the highly publicized issue of Spidey sitting down for an interview with longtime nemesis J. Jonah Jameson — but it didn’t work for me. The concept is interesting, but it doesn’t belong in this series at this moment.

Brian Michael Bendis will always have the definitive confrontation between the two characters in Ultimate Spider-Man. But too much weird stuff has gone on between the two characters in the 616 universe, a lot of which is referenced in the new issue, to make the confrontation as meaningful as it should be.

Comic Reviews: Batman #34, Captain American #695, Iceman #7 and Iron First #74.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 10/28/17

Happy Halloween! The most spooktacular holiday of the year is right around the corner, and if you’re reading this on Saturday, I’m right in the middle of some solid celebrations! I have two costumes this year: Walmart is selling giant animal mascot heads for only $20, so I snagged me a rabbit head! And then I’m going to a zombie party tonight! Should be fun!

But I also had comics to read! And they were pretty much spectacular across the board this week, I was amazed! I wanted to give everything a super high score! From Amazing Spider-Man to Detective Comics to Power Rangers! But I would be remiss if the final issue of the Slott/Allred Silver Surfer didn’t blow me away. Comic Book of the Week for sure!

Surfer Eve 01

I hope the Silver Surfer is too!

Perhaps even Comic Book of the Year! I was worried they wouldn’t stick the landing, but oh man, Slott and Co. were saving something really, really special for this final issue. Something that pretty much tied the entire damn story together. My hat is off to the creative team of Silver Surfer. This was a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Comic Reviews: Amazing Spider-Man #790, Batgirl #16, Detective Comics #967, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 and Silver Surfer #14.
