Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/6/23
I’ve got to get through one more week or work before I’m on vacation for a while ‘nother week. I cannot wait! Just gotta pass the time, do what needs to be done and hopefully come out the other side free and clear. Having comics helps, like the first issue of a new Shazam! relaunch and another enjoyable Scarlet Witch comic.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #900 because I’m not made of stone and can enjoy some crossover hijinks as much as the next fan.
Meanwhile, I’ve been playing the DLC to Horizon: Forbidden West and the biggest problems is trying to remember what everything does. There are so many unique weapons and abilities in this game, and I haven’t played it in a year. But the real big news, of course, is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3! I saw it, I loved it and I’ll have a full review and my thoughts in the usual place on Wednesday.
Comic Reviews: Batman #900, Scarlet Witch #5 and Shazam! #1.

It’s just not working on me. Drenching this Flash movie in so much Batman nostalgia isn’t doing anything for me. I liked those original Batman movies when I was a kid, sure. But having Michael Keaton back as Batman means nothing to me. Especially not when it’s happening in the middle of a Flash movie, and especially especially not when it looks like he’s just going to stand there and spout familiar quotes from those movies.
First it was “I’m Batman.” And now we’ve got “You want to get nuts? Let’s get nuts.” That’s not a Batman catchphrase! Unless, in his continuity, he took it from that one time he said it and turned it into a catch phrase?
Look, I’m gonna go see this movie in theaters. But jeez louise, there’s so much chaos in this trailer. And there’s so much just slavish praise of Keaton and his Batman. It’s just coming off as really cringy to me. But I suppose what do I know? We’ll find out when this thing comes to theaters, and either lives up to all the hype or crashes and burns like the rest of them.
The Flash is coming to theaters on June 16!

The Penguin TV Show At Least Looks Good
This in-production teaser trailer for The Penguin TV show arrived last week, when HBO Max announced the change to their subscription service. I don’t really know what to make of this show yet, but it looks good, at the very least.
Colin Farell obviously disappears into the makeup, as we all know. And the character seems really cool. But what’s this show gonna be? Just the Penguin being a dangerous gangster guy? He doesn’t have a family, and I doubt they’re going to put him in therapy like an obvious Sopranos rip-off. So what’s this show gonna feature? And didn’t we just get a show starring the Penguin? Wasn’t that what Gotham was about? It was half about the Penguin, surely, right?
Anyway, I still think they should have made a Gotham Central TV show. That would have been killer!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 4/8/23
Happy Easter, everyone! I’ll be heading home to get a meal with the parents and whatever extended family show up. That’s always fun. Even if it comes right in the middle of my 3-day weekend. Oh well. It’s always nice to have Monday off. And it’s always nice to get some quality, generally good comics this week, like Batman, Captain America and even more Saga.
Comic Book of the Week goes to Scarlet Witch #4, which remains a really fun, engaging and magical comic.
Meanwhile, I’m still chugging through Gotham Knights. The fights are a real chore, so I’m not all that attached to the game. But I’m gonna make it through, I’m gonna do all the good Robin stuff! And I’m eagerly awaiting the new Chaos Dwarves DLC to Total War: Warhammer 3, my game of the year from last year. And I liked the Super Mario Bros. Movie, even if it was pretty basic. No Sonic the Hedgehog cameo, like I was hoping for.
Comic Reviews: Batman #134, Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11, Saga #63 and Scarlet Witch #4.

I stopped watching Titans at least one season ago. It just wasn’t very good anymore. It was a live action superhero show that was taking us through the life cycle of the Robins, and I just couldn’t watch anymore. But I keep track, and I know they had a live action Tim Drake in the latest season.
And in the upcoming season, he’s going to become Robin! Check out his suit. That’s actor Jay Lycurgo.
I like it! And I’m always pleased to see another fine example that a Robin costume can work in modern, live action designs. It looks cool, it looks detailed, and it looks like Robin. Unfortunately, from what I understand, there’s no Batman anymore in Titans, so this Tim becomes Robin without Batman. That kinda stinks. But again, I’m not watching, so who am I to judge? I can just sit back and admire a cool Robin costume design.
