And Just Like That, I’m Totally in Favor of Marvel’s New Inhuman Policy

There has been a lot of talk about the Inhumans recently, and for good reason. For one thing, they’re going to get their own big budget movie in 2018 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For another thing, there has long been a rumor that Marvel wants to reposition the Inhumans in their comic book universe to take over for the X-Men, because FOX Studios owns the rights to the X-Men movies, and Marvel wants to find a way around that.

For the longest time, I thought this was a ridiculous idea. I’ve never been an Inhumans fan, and I thought it was just silly for Marvel to force them down our throats just to get their way and spite FOX.

But after watching the mid-season finale for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and reading Axis #7, my normally curmudgeony mind has been altered! It’s as if I’ve personally undergone comic book Terrigenesis!

Even Blackbolt cheered when Skye shot that guy!

Consider me completely on board with Marvel’s new Inhumans policies and plans. I’m a huge fan of the X-Men, but right now, they are old news. The Inhumans are the way to go, and I can’t wait to see all of Marvel’s plans come to fruition!

What the heck am I talking about? Join me after the jump to see what I mean! Oh, and SPOILERS for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Axis and Avengers: Age of Ultron!

For those who don’t know, the Inhumans are a race of ancient humans with special powers, living in their own secluded kingdom of Attilan. For decades, the Inhumans were always this minor part of Marvel Comics, usually keeping to themselves and rarely bothering anyone. But very recently, Marvel wrote a story where new Inhumans starting popping up all over the world.

This was done because Marvel doesn’t own the movie rights to mutants or the X-Men, their more popular group of disenfranchised people with super-powers. So since Marvel can’t have mutants in their Avengers movies, they’ve started pushing the Inhumans into a bigger role. It makes sense from a technical and financial standpoint, but not from a fan standpoint.

Fans are a fickle lot

Personally, I’ve never liked the Inhumans or their Royal Family. I didn’t particularly dislike them or anything, they just weren’t characters I cared about. Whereas I’m a huge X-Men fan. So when rumors started swirling that Marvel was going to turn the Inhumans into a new version of mutants just so that they could control the movie rights, I rolled my eyes and scoffed, as if I were better than anyone involved in those decisions. I mean, come on, how do you simply replace the X-Men?

Turns out, Marvel knows exactly how! Consider me a convert!

It starts with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a mediocre TV show I stuck with through thick and thin. Even as my friends stopped watching, I kept going, enjoying it well enough. It helps that I’m a die-hard fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and would watch anything connected to it.

How awesome is Fitz this season?

Since the beginning, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been toying with certain mysteries – like how was Coulson brought back to life, and what are Skye’s mysterious origins – and I wasn’t particularly invested in any of them. Like I said, the show could be a bit of a dud. But I kept watching, and with this second season, the show started finally answering those mysteries in a big way.

In last week’s mid-season finale, we found out that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was leading to the Inhumans this entire time! The mysteries of Coulson’s resurrection and Skye’s family were all part of this huge tapestry that the creators were building, one that led up to the reveal of Terrigen Crystals and Skye going through Terrigenesis right there on national television!

This was a real thing!

Also it turns out that she’s Daisy Johnson, a character from the comics, so that’s pretty awesome.

But still! The Inhumans! On Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! I was actually kind of thrilled, because the show has gotten much better in its second season. And rather than wait until 2018, when Marvel will probably do a movie about the uptight Inhuman Royal Family (like I said, not a fan), they’ve instead decided to focus on a more low key, personal introduction to the Inhumans. I think that’s a spectacular approach, and it’s definitely worked on me. Inhumans on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is thrilling!

But it doesn’t stop there. Marvel apparently also has a big retcon planned for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

In last week’s Axis #7, it’s revealed that the twins are not the children of Magneto, as has been established continuity for a few decades now.

Continuity be damned!

Why the hell would Marvel pull that kind of insane retcon? Maybe because Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are about to star in the big Avengers sequel, and Marvel can’t call them mutants or have them connected to Magneto in any way. Magneto, of course, is the star of the various X-Men movies. So, by Marvel’s way of thinking, why not make it easy on themselves and just change the movie twins into Inhumans?

And why not just go one step further and retcon the comic twins into Inhumans as well?

They’re not exactly being subtle about it

At any other time, I would probably be really annoyed at that kind of retcon. It erases a major part of their characters and feeds into that stupid inner squabble to stick it to FOX.

But you know what? I’m totally on board! If Marvel really wants to change the comic book Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch into Inhumans to better line up with their movie counterparts, then I’m in! Go for it! I think it’s a fantastic idea!

I don’t know why this sudden change in opinion has come over me, but I couldn’t be more in favor of what Marvel is doing with the Inhumans. I’m excited about the crossover potential between Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the twins, and I think it’s a neat new direction to take Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in the comics. I’ve always considered them, especially Scarlet Witch, on the fringes of the X-Universe. And they wear that ‘Magneto is my father’ thing on the sleeves like a weepy badge. Free them from that hinderance and let them stand on their own at long last!

Who needs the X-Men anymore? Let the light of the Marvel Cinematic Universe shine upon all things and make them good!

  1. As they say, there is no zealot like a convert!

Welcome to the dark side, brother! I have been a longtime fan of the Inhumans, and I very much enjoyed their revival (especially the new characters like Dante and Jason), so I am also on board with the Inhuman revolution.

As much as I love the X-men, they have so much baggage and drama going on, it’s hard to do anything with them without it turning into this huge, complicated deal. Sometimes intricate plots with a large cast are great, but sometimes you wanna have a more focused cast figuring things out without all that history dragging them down.

It’s gonna be interesting to see what Marvel is planning for the twins. Their parenthood has always been a huge part of their characters, with Quicksilver having a boatload of daddy issues and Scarlet Witch being, er, influenced, by Magneto.

How do you think this will affect them? Will this change their relation with Lorna?

    • I don’t know if my new love of Marvel’s Inhumans will get me to go back and start reading Inhuman again. But we’ll see…

As for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, it’s hard to say how this will effect them. On the one hand, I would like to think they actually try to work out their daddy issues. And the relationship between Pietro and Lorna was a big deal in All-New X-Factor, but that’s being cancelled, so who’s to say they ever really meet up again for a long time?

On the other hand, I think Marvel would probably just like to get it over with quickly, like ripping off a band-aid. Just free the two of them from their daddy issues and have them move on quickly to enjoy new success as newly revitalized characters.

  2. Personally, I hope this turns Magneto evil again. The idea that Magneto was a father and then a grandfather had humanized him a lot. But I’m kinda done with that. So let’s hope that without Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch proving that he has done some good, he can go back to being evil.

Mainly I want him to do something evil, then have Cyclops turn on him. That would help Cyclops be better. He’ll be like “I know you think I’m evil, but I’m not Magneto evil.”

Then Beast and Iceman can be like “Well that’s true. Let’s be best friends again.”

Also, I would love to see Magneto fully turn Polaris evil. Like without his other children, he now clings to Polaris even more. All New X-Factor has proven that nobody wants to read about a heroic Polaris, so how about an evil Polaris (but not crazy Chuck Austen Polaris. This requires balance).

Y’know I’m just spit-balling here, but I think we need Magneto to start a new Brotherhood. Get Polaris on board. Blob is still floating around. So is Mystique probably. Then resurrect Pyro and let’s get this thing going.

That way we can have the Good: Jean Grey School. The Bad: Brotherhood. And a little bit of both: Cyclops. I think it would work and now is a good time to get that ball rolling.

Also, I too like the Inhumans and everything that’s been going on. But I’ve always been a fan of Blackbolt since that one Exiles comic.

    • I don’t want Cyclops’ journey to be as simple as Beast and Iceman forgiving him! They must be made to see the truth! Pax Utopia!

Also, that would be a cool journey for Magneto. He has been a good guy for too long. While I do love it, I’m sure he could be awesome again if he really pushed himself. Bendis did recently bring back classic Blob, though he was relying on Mutant Growth Hormone…which itself could be a solid story.

  3. what a stupid article. lacking of any real depth like most marvel studio films.

As a comic reader I have to laugh at all this fans…wait marvel comic fans claiming to be real marvel fans but only became a fan for marvel by watching the childish and brainless Disney comics films like Avengers and iron man 3 and guardians of the galaxy that are just embarrassing to watch after one time.

Inhumans will never replace the xmen. xmen has had too much impact on the comic world and above all they had substance which is something non of the MCU characters have.

xmen was a result of hard work, great concept with loads of social themes and political commentary and characters people just feel in love with. the top 5 marvel heroines come from XMEN.

inhumans will be the product of the Disney cash. another stupid marvel film pumped up by Disney that will have lots of explosions with barely any story plot but will cater to the dumb masses.

as a comic reader for decades it is just laughable to see all this marvel studio fans open their mouths. they show too much ignorance when it comes to comic book.
