Welp, So Much For My Superior Spider-Man Theory

Oh well. Can’t win them all. Amazing Spider-Man writer Dan Slott appeared at an early morning breakfast on today’s unofficial start to New York City Comic-Con. He told the investors and other big shots about some of the details for Superior Spider-Man, the upcoming relaunch of the wall-crawler.

I’m going to save the spoilers until after the jump, just in case you don’t want to find out. But suffice to say, my theory that Doctor Octopus kills Mary Jane Watson has been debunked – that is, if you believed Bleeding Cool…which I tend to do.

According to Slott, based on this article at Bleeding Cool, Peter Parker will not be Spider-Man in the pages of Superior Spider-Man. Whoever this new Spider-Man is, he’ll have retractable claws.

And most importantly to my readers, Slott says that Mary Jane will once again hook up with Spider-Man – just not Peter Parker Spider-Man.

So there goes my theory. If Mary Jane is still around to hook up with this new Spider-Man, then she’s definitely not going to be killed by Doctor Octopus in Amazing Spider-Man #700. And whatever does happen in that landmark issue, it’s going to be big enough to make Peter Parker stop being Spider-Man.

And to that I say: Really?!?

That’s your big story, Slott? A story where somebody else takes over as Spider-Man? And where Peter Parker quits? Or is killed? Seriously!? How many times has that story been told already? How many different God damned times? And how often does it ever work out? When does it ever stick? And when fans look back on all the times it’s happened before, when do any of them actually like it? When have these stories ever been fondly remembered?

Never, that’s when. My interest in Superior Spider-Man just plummeted.

  1. Ok four ways this can go:

    1. New Guy is Miles Morales.
    2. New Guy is someone else we’ve heard of. (Harry Osborn, Carlie Cooper, Toad, etc.)
    3. New Guy is someone we’ve never heard of. (Joe Krimbles, Lance Terbuk, Captain Buzzard, etc.)
    4. They don’t tell us who New Guy is until one day they just tell us pretending that the mystery of it all actually mattered. (“ZOMG! It was Toad all along! I can’t believe we’re married now!” – MJ)

And to be fair, I kinda liked when Ben Reilly was Spider-Man. In hindsight it was probably pretty terrible. But I imagine there are kids out there who will like New Guy. Personally though I’d die laughing if it turned out to be the 616 Miles Morales.

  2. hey Sabretooth as Spiderman is going to be awesome. stop the hate bitches!!

  3. I agree, if Peter in any way, shape or form, stops being spiderman, i’m going to be one unhappy camper, like a lot of other people.
New Spidey has retractable claws? Really? Hmm, didn’t Spidey 2099 have that sorta thing?

Despite these new revelations, i’m still looking forward to issue 700. I’m intensely curious. But after that, who knows. First they did away with Rich Ryder Nova, and then cancelled the Fantastic Four, if Peter goes bye bye too, i don’t know if i can bear it.

  4. If Peter is no longer spiderman that is it for me. I am done with marvel. Younger new readers will like the new spider-man. For us older fans Peter Parker will always be spide-man. Marvel knows they will always need Spider-man just not Peter Parker being him. Well thanks Marvel now I can save money from comical I am.no longer going to.buy.

    • Whatever they do, you know it’s going to be temporary. Peter will be back as Spider-Man before too long. Just as he’s always come back as Spider-Man before too long. That’s how comics works. But I definitely don’t blame you from not picking up Superior Spider-Man. I’m definitely considering not picking it up either.
