My 6 Favorite Authors

The creative process

I want to be a novelist. That’s my dream job, right there. To be able to kick back and create wonderfully imaginative stories, then share those stories with the world. I have several ideas, but I’ve yet to really get working on any novel. I mean, isn’t everybody trying to ‘finish their novel’? It’s one of those extreme jobs, like a rock star, where you have to work really hard, and even then there’s only a slim chance that you’ll get your big break and be discovered.

The work will be worth it though. I love to write. This blog and my day job are proof of that. I just need to find somebody who will pay me to write what I want to write.

I’ve wanted to write books for a long time now, books or comic books. But ideally, I want to write a novel. An adventure story. Something exciting and character-driven. I have no interest in writing a screenplay and trying to get discovered in Hollywood. Working on a TV show is probably a blast, but that’s still lower on my list than writing a popular novel. So I thought I’d share with everyone My 6 Favorite Authors. These are writers whom I’ve read extensively and have loved almost everything they’ve done. I’m not as well-read as I’d like to be, so maybe I’m missing out on some great stuff, but I’m happy with what I’ve read. Maybe I’ll even get some of you interested in checking out their work.

And much thanks to Alyssa for introducing me to several of these authors.

I Must Have the Evil Touch – Goodbye X-23

No more team-ups with vampire Jubilee

No sooner do I announce on my blog that I’m going to be buying my first ever issue of the comic book X-23, than Marvel announces that they’re cancelling the title! ComicBookResources has the scoop. It seems that January’s issue #20 is going to be the last one. How is that fair at all? What if I really like the book? What if X-23 becomes a new favorite character of mine? Why announce the cancellation today of all days?

What the hell, Marvel!? Don’t punish the world for my hubris!

This is like that time I panned the new Green Arrow, only for the writer to almost immediately announce he was leaving the title.

So I’m sorry, X-23 writer Marjorie Liu. I must have done something somewhere to someone to warrant such violent reaction to my blog posts from both Marvel and DC. This doesn’t bode well for my eventually working for one of them someday. I’m still going to buy the super adorable X-23 issue tomorrow, even if the book is on its way to cancel-ville. It’ll be my way to stick it to the man.

Fans of Liu should know that Marvel said she’ll be moving on to other projects. And X-23 will become a reoccurring character in the Avengers Academy series, which I think is a neat place for her. Much cooler teen school setting for her to join over Wolverine and the X-Men’s teen school setting.

I Am a Sucker for Adorableness

I have zero interest in the character X-23. She’s a young, female clone of Wolverine that skirts around the edges of the X-Men franchise. I just don’t care about her at all. She’s a silly idea that has somehow gained enough traction to warrant her own series. I guess she’s got fans somewhere…(says the guy who loves Multiple Man and the Mimic).

But despite my disinterest in X-23, I’ll definitely be buying her new issue Wednesday because she’s going to be baby-sitting Franklin and Valeria Richards, the children of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman from the Fantastic Four!

The preview pages for this issue, written by Marjorie Liu and drawn by Sana Takeda, are too adorable for me to pass up.

Continuing with my Fairy Tale Theme

So I’m still rather new at this whole blogging thing. I mean, I still haven’t been issued my official membership card. I had to draw one one construction paper, and they didn’t accept it at the cool blogging clubs! Anyway, I got an e-mail the other day from www.babysittingjobs.com asking for me to plug their site. I’m torn between whether it’s spam or legit…and I’m going to err on the side of ‘why the hell not’  and go with the latter. Maybe they really do like my blog. It could happen.

And I’m a firm believer in peace in the blogosphere.

Anyway, so they wrote up a list of ‘The 10 Reasons I Miss Mother Goose Stories’. Check it out if you’ve got some time to spare.

They’re probably also really good for babysitting jobs.

Songs of Skyrim

There’s an awesome new role-playing video game out this week, called Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim! It’s a sword and sorcery epic, where you create your own legendary character and take them on amazing adventures through the land of Skyrim. The Internet is awash with praise for this game. I can’t wait to play it, but I’m going to have to wait until I’m less broke. Until there, the Internet has been kind enough to give us some hilariously awesome, fan-made songs about Skyrim to tide me over!

They were made by some group called Harry Patridge. The songs are brilliant and the animation is fantastic!
