Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/8/15

For some odd reason, this was another light week for comics for me. But this time, rather than focusing on DC Comics, it’s Marvel with the two books out that I actually read. Weird. But hey, less work for me to do to review! That’s got to count for something.

Along with the latest issue of Bloodshot Reborn from Valiant Comics, Marvel drops the fun-two punch of Darth Vader and Ms. Marvel, the latter of which easily snags Comic Book of the Week. The fun, touching story of Kamala Khan teaming up with her namesake easily defeats the Dark Lord of the Sith.

Teamwork!

Over at Word of the Nerd, I read and reviewed the third issue of Giant-Size Little Marvel: AvX, and it was a blast! Skottie Young is just having a lot of fun with his tie-in, which is probably the most appropriate way to reference Avengers vs. X-Men from now on.

Comic Reviews: Bloodshot Reborn #5, Darth Vader #8 and Ms. Marvel #17.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 8/1/15

Greetings from nearly the Boston Comic-Con! Since these reviews are being posted on Saturday morning, I’m most likely sitting at my desk at work, plugging away and counting down the minutes until I can slip away. Then I’ll be off to the lovely Boston area to hang out with friends and revel in my comic book geekness! Then on Sunday, I’ll be at the Con, passing out flyers for Gamer Girl & Vixen and hopefully having a blast!

But until then, comics! Unfortunately, since it’s a ‘fifth week’, we’ve got a pretty short stack. Nothing from Marvel, a little dip over at Valiant and then two separate Batgirl books!

Batgirl #42 wins Comic Book of the Week for an awesome team up between father and daughter.

The Bat-Family’s current status quo is awesome!

And over at Word of the Nerd, I took a look at the latest issue of Star Wars, which is a fun little peek into the life of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine. If you’re a Star Wars fan, it’s a darn good read!

Comic Reviews: Batgirl #42, Batgirl Annual #3 and Ninjak #5.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 7/11/15

Someday I’ll go to San Diego for Comic-Con. I don’t necessarily want to go. I imagine the crowds are horrendous and unbearable. But I’d still like to go, in theory, and that’s important too. But at least I have some good comics to read while I’m stuck in New York.

It’s a Marvel-less week this week, with Secret Wars dominating too much of their time and energy. Fortunately, DC is more than happy to pick up the slack, with quality new issues of Gotham Academy, Starfire and Justice League of America.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batman #42, the second consecutive issue of the new series to earn the award! Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are just killing it with their new Robo-Batman.

Commissioner Gordon may never be the same again

I’m chomping at the bit for the crossover with We Are Robin!

Over at Word of the Nerd, my latest dive into Secret Wars tie-ins left me rather disappointed. Civil War #1 is a waste of a comic, spinning its wheels with backstory and exposition as it tries to set up a ‘What If…’ scenario. Skip it.

Comic Reviews: Batman #42, Bloodshot Reborn #4, Gotham Academy #8, Justice League of America #2 and Starfire #2.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/27/15

It’s another solid week for DC Comics! After the mess of Convergence, they have come out smelling like roses with new comics, new directions and a new sense of fun. I only hope Marvel has the same kind of response to Secret Wars, though Marvel was doing fine before they started their summer-long crossover.

This week sees new issues of Aquaman, Batgirl and Grayson, and the debut of We Are Robin, the comic I was most looking forward to with DC’s new rebranding. Does it live up to the hype? Mostly. It’s a relatively sparse first issue, but it starts laying some important groundwork.

Comic Book of the Week goes to Batgirl #41. No big changes here, just more Batgirl goodness.

Go with him if you want to live

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/23/15

Happy Memorial Day weekend, my fellow Americans! And happy weekend to readers from countries that don’t celebrate Memorial Day this weekend! Whatever the case may be, this is definitely the kick off to summer…at least in those countries that are experiencing summer right now! At the very least, we’re all getting new comics.

With DC Comics buried in Convergence, and Marvel Comics starting to dive into Secret Wars, my pull list is getting pretty small. Fortunately, it gives me more time to focus on publishers other than the Big Two! We’ve got new issues of Bloodshot Reborn and Ninjak from Valiant Comics, and Oni Press’ Kaijumax wins Comic Book of the Week for being delightfully weird.

Took a wrong turn at Tokyo

Being the Marvel fan that I am, I’m not ignoring Secret Wars as completely as I’m ignoring Convergence. So you can check out my review of A-Force #1 over at Word of the Nerd. It’s a solid comic, but it reeks of being just a gimmick. If that creative team was allowed to create a real A-Force in the real Marvel Universe, it would be a hell of a comic!

And if you haven’t yet, you can pre-order Gamer Girl & Vixen on our Kickstarter page! And if any of you readers are fellow reviewers and are willing to give Gamer Girl & Vixen a look see, let me know in the comments!

Comic Reviews: Bloodshot Reborn #2, Kaijumax #2, Ninjak #3, Star Wars #5 and Uncanny X-Men #34.
