I Hate to Be ‘That Guy’, But I Don’t Like the New Star Wars Title
It was revealed yesterday that principal filming is over for Star Wars: Episode VII, and with it we learned the title: Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I have no idea who comes up with this stuff.
So look, I hate to be ‘that guy’, that geek who can’t accept change or new ideas with his franchises, but I don’t like title. I’m sure it fits the movie fine, it’s just that I don’t like the word ‘Awakens’. It’s such an awkward word. I write crime stories for my local newspaper for a living, and sometimes I have to write about people being woken up by a crime, and the word ‘awakens’ is all manner of cumbersome and ungainly.
So there, I have a very good reason to dislike the new Star Wars title. Maybe George Lucas will now read my blog and change it!
Beyond that complaint, though, it’s probably fine. I mean, ‘Return of the Jedi’ would seem to imply that the Force was coming back. But I guess it meant ‘Jedi’ singular, as in just Luke.
Movie Posters: One Real, and One We All Wish Was Real
Hey hey folks, let’s start this week off with a couple of movie posters that popped onto the Internet late last week. First up is the first poster for Thor: The Dark World, which conveniently enough shows Thor!
He’s looking mighty Thory. I suppose it’s just an early promotional poster, nothing that really says ‘Dark World’ to me. But I’m sure it’s just the beginning of the Thor promotional campaign. Hard to believe Thor’s sequel comes out later this year. There are so many other superhero movies to worry about first. I wonder why they didn’t want to release Thor 2 during the Summer?
I’m also hoping we get a Thor teaser trailer to go with Iron Man 3, which comes out next week!
Now here is a poster that represents the ultimate culmination of everything awesome about the Internet. It’s a fan-made poster for Patton Oswalt’s Star Wars Episode VII rant from Parks and Recreation!
The actual Parks & Rec episode was nowhere near as cool as the unedited Patton rant. But the idea that someone out there in fan land, I believe working for Entertainment Weekly, went and photoshopped this awesome poster is just another reason why I love the Internet!
Patton Oswalt is Our Nerd King
I love Patton Oswalt, I love Parks and Recreation and I love Star Wars. Somehow, in this wonderful world of ours, those three things will come together tonight in a glorious manifesto of Oswaltian brilliance! And even better, the people at NBC posted online the full, unedited spiel!
Trust me when I say all 9 minutes are completely worth it. Oswalt is playing a citizen of Pawnee, Indiana, where Parks & Rec takes place, and he decides to impose a citizen filibuster during a city council meeting. He has to talk uninterrupted for however long he wants without ceding the floor to keep the council from some kind of vote. So he launches into this great proposal for his vision of Star Wars Episode VII.
It’s greatness personified.
It’s good to be a geek.
I Am Totally Cool with J.J. Abrams Directing the New Star Wars
It was announced earlier this week that J.J. Abrams would be directing Star Wars Episode VII some day in the near future. If you’re not familiar with the name, Abrams is also the guy behind the recent Star Trek reboot. So one guy is going to be in charge of both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises.
Who thought that would be a good idea? And how did Abrams get to be so lucky?
That being said, I am totally cool with Abrams directing the next Star Wars. I loved his first Star Trek, I’m bound to like the second one, and I’ve enjoyed the rest of his work, like Cloverfield. So for the geek record, which I know exists, I am totally in favor of seeing what Abrams can do with Star Wars.
Especially if it’s anything like this fan trailer posted online by GcPrOductions.
Now that was impressive.
