Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 6/26/21
Pretty average week for me, all things considered. Thankfully, we’ve got some good, solid, enjoyable comics! Mostly. The Hellfire Gala has some strong chapters, and that’s mostly about it.
Comic Book of the Week goes to S.W.O.R.D. #6 for the powerful, character-based, emotional Hellfire Gala issue I’ve been waiting for! This one finally shows what all the big moves have been about!
Meanwhile, at long last, several years in the waiting, I am finally playing Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. My favorite types of video games are the big, open world sandbox adventures, and this is supposedly the best of the all. But I didn’t own a Nintendo Switch. Now I do and the game is great. I might be playing this all summer!
Also, Heroes Reborn ended in a fun way. It all led to a big fight, as these things usually do. But this was definitely one of my favorite of the recent Big Events. I don’t read them all, but this one had some real charm and, as I’ve been saying all along, it had that sweet Amalgam Comics vibe that I love so much!
Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #1038, Power Rangers #8, Robin #3, Wolverine #13, S.W.O.R.D. #6 and Way of X #3.

It’s the week of weeks! What week is that? Why…this week, obviously. I’m getting more sleep now so I’m feeling better, so at least there’s that. Plenty of fun comics this week, from the finale to Far Sector to a couple more solid chapters of the Hellfire Gala!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin #8 because, as is usually the case, I love this comic and everything in it. Maybe I just love any iteration of the Green Power Ranger too much.
Meanwhile, the first episode of Loki has arrived and it was really fun! I like the set-up, I like the characters and actors, and I think this is going to be a really neat show. Likewise, Heroes Reborn remains really neat! Probably my favorite Big Event from Marvel in a while.
Comic Reviews: Detective Comics #1037, Far Sector #12, Mighty Morphin #8, Strange Academy #11, Excalibur #21, X-Men #21 and Children of the Atom #4.

It’s the week I’ve been waiting nearly a year for! X-Corp has finally been released and Multiple Man, my favorite comic book character, is back in regular comics! What a joyous day! Too bad it had to go up against a new issue of Mighty Morphin. That comic can’t be beat!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Mighty Morphin #7 for another jam-packed issue full of neat characters, great story twists and the new Green Ranger!
Meanwhile, I’m still reading and skimming through the new Heroes Reborn big event from Marvel and I’m really digging it! The comics feel like a spiritual sequel to Amalgam Comics. They’re based on the lighter, more chipper tone of comics from the Amalgam era, and they’ve even got callbacks and references to “other” comics from the “canon”, like Amalgam used to do! For example, one of the comics features what is supposed to be a preview for a new Starjammers comic “coming soon”. And these comics are full of cute crossover/merged character appearances and cameos, like Johnny Storm of the Nova Corps! So yeah, I’m having fun with Heroes Reborn so far!
Comic Reviews: Children of the Atom #3, Mighty Morphin #7, X-Corp #1 and X-Factor #9.

What a finale to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! I loved it, loved every part of it, from the character twists to the new costume reveals to pretty much everything! Expect a nice big review/thoughts roundup on the series on Wednesday! Until then, comics!
Comic Book of the Week goes to Way of X #1 for taking a deep dive into life on Krakoa, unlike any other X-Men comic since the new era began. I had my hesitations about this series, but the first issue delivered a lot of what I want!
Meanwhile, this week also saw the release of the new Mortal Kombat movie! I found it simultaneously cool and dumb. I’m mildly satisfied as a MK fan. And with my new Nintendo Switch, I splurged and bought Pokemon Shield. When the game was released, I was confident I would never get the chance to play. But here I am, me and my Grookey! It’s fine so far.
Also, I read this week’s issue of Spider-Woman but didn’t review it for timing reasons. But there are some fun character developments that make me want to pick this series back up again!
Comic Reviews: Justice League #60, Nightwing #79, Power Rangers #6, S.W.OR.D. #5 and Way of X #1.
