6 Thoughts on the First Season of Iron Fist

As I do every weekend a new Marvel Netflix show comes out, I binge-watched the whole darn thing over the course of a couple days. I was born for binge-watching. Iron Fist is the last of the four main characters to get a solo show, building up to the united Defenders show airing in September. Marvel and Netflix have been hitting them out of the park this whole time, so how did Iron Fist hold up?

I liked it well enough, despite the harsh, negative reviews it’s been getting. It was an entertaining show. But Iron Fist suffers from a distinct lack of style or personality, which the other shows had in spades.

Iron Fist Review List 01

Season Rating: 5/10 – Alright

As for the race controversy, I agree that it would have been nice had Marvel cast an Asian actor to play Danny Rand. It would have been a nice step and could have added a lot to the show, while taking away nothing. But I’m not going to hold it against the show that Marvel decided to stick to the character’s source material. I’m going to judge the show on its own merits.

And with that in mind, join me after the jump for my review of Marvel’s Iron Fist TV show! Expect full SPOILERS, in case you haven’t finished the show yet.

New Iron Fist Trailer Is Something!

Maybe it’s the sore throat, sniffles and runny nose talking, but this new Iron Fist trailer doesn’t get me too pumped for the upcoming show. Which is a shame, because the Marvel Netflix shows have been on point!

The problem with this trailer is that it doesn’t show us anything new or interesting to get us excited about Iron Fist. This should have been a story trailer, letting us know what the show is actually going to be about. But this trailer is almost completely about Danny Rand as a person, without getting into his powers, his mystical training or, honestly, anything at all about him. They tease his powers briefly at the end, and it’s the most exciting part of the trailer.

They name-drop K’un-Lun, but they don’t explain at all why it’s a place we’ll want to visit. It comes off like a generic martial arts monastery. They show Danny fighting, but what modern action hero isn’t a highly trained martial artist these days? They show Colleen Wing, but don’t do anything with her. They tease Madame Gao, but only by simply showing us that she’s on the show.

And most importantly, where is the villain? The Netflix shows have all had hugely impressive villains, for the most part. But we don’t get a hint of anything like that in Iron Fist, unless you count that one generic white guy businessman who showed up in the beginning. But who cares about him?

This is inexcusable! Iron Fist has some great villains! And even if he doesn’t, they can’t even show us an evil martial arts master? Where is Steel Serpent? Or even Fat Cobra?

Iron Fist might be the hardest sell of all the Marvel Netflix shows, and if this is the last trailer we get before the show launches next month, then Marvel better hope they’ve got a hidden gem here.

I mean, I’m totally gonna watch it. I just think they should have upped their trailer game this close to the premiere.

6 Thoughts on the First Season of Luke Cage

I look forward to the Marvel Netflix shows about as much as I look forward to their new movies each year! The quality is through the roof, and I can always count on a solid weekend of binge-watching, as if we were dealing with a 13-hour movie. I’m totally OK with that! The production values are great, the stories and characters are phenomenal, and Marvel continues to be outstanding entertainment. Their new show, Luke Cage, proved to be no exception last weekend.

Season Rating: 8/10 – Very Good

Sometimes I think it would be great to get a full movie/TV crossover, and sometimes, when I’m in the middle of a great show, it just doesn’t matter. Luke Cage deserves to stand on its own as a solid, enjoyable entertainment. It’s a full season of television that delivers powerful drama, amazing characters and some great special effects. This is the sort of superhero storytelling that I could only have dreamed about as a kid.

So join me after the jump for my season review of Luke Cage on Netflix! Expect FULL SPOILERS for the show!

As If You Needed One More Reason to Watch Luke Cage This Weekend

While it feels like forever until election day, the arrival of the next Marvel Netflix show will be upon us quickly! Luke Cage arrives on Friday, and early reviews have been as spectacular as we could have hoped. This one final trailer looks pretty stellar, too.

Not much else to say. It looks great, with a lot of style and a real focus on Luke as a man split by indecision. Will he become a hero? Will Jessica Jones guest star? How awesome will it be? I have loved each and every Marvel Netflix show, and all signs point to Luke Cage being just as good. So I’m on board for a big binge marathon this weekend!

New Luke Cage Trailer Brings the Goods!

Are you ready for a full-sized Luke Cage trailer? You better be, because the Internet delivers!

Looks awesome! This is gonna be another great show from Marvel and Netflix. Cage looks just as badass and cool as he did in Jessica Jones. But we gotta wait until the end of September before we can actually watch the darn thing.
