Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/22/12

What the hell, Marvel!? Some of us still have Christmas shopping to do, yet you hit us the week before Christmas with a massive pile of new comics to buy? Jeez louise! Bad enough this is also my heavy DC Comics week too! So let’s just say I bought a ton of comics this week, all so Marvel can be all fancy and only release Amazing Spider-Man #700 next week. Their big marketing scheme is hell on my wallet. At least most of the comics that came out this week were pretty good.

Everything under the sun seemed to come out this week, giving us a wide range of different titles. We’ve got major releases for the Avengers, X-Men and the Fantastic Four, not to mention both X-Force titles. If you’re more into Batman and the Death of the Family story, there are both the Nightwing and Red Hood tie-ins, one of which was good and the other quite bad. So very busy week. And though there were a lot of great titles, I think FF #2 pulls away with Comic Book of the Week. I really think that title is going to live up to its awesome potential.

Comic Reviews: All-New X-Men #4, Avengers #2, Batwoman #15, Cable and X-Force #2, Captain Marvel #8, FF #2, Green Lantern #15, Green Lantern: New Guardians #15, Hawkeye #6, Indestructible Hulk #2, Nightwing #15, Red Hood and the Outlaws #15, Thor: God of Thunder #3, Thunderbolts #2, Uncanny X-Force #35, Wolverine and the X-Men #22, Wonder Woman #15.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 12/8/12

Not much out of DC Comics this week, but not to worry, Marvel has us more than covered with another seemingly weekly chapter of All-New X-Men and the brand new adjectiveless Avengers #1! Considering how popular Jonathan Hickman’s Fantastic Four run has become, I was actually kind of excited to see what he could do with the Avengers. Sadly, that excitement turned into a whole lot of apathy once I actually read the title. Similar to my reaction to his very popular S.H.I.E.L.D. series. Maybe I just don’t get Hickman. He’s got some wild ideas, but I’ve never been overly impressed. We also get the debut of the new Thunderbolts series and the final issue of Amazing Spider-Man before the big #700. And I still don’t know what’s going to happen?

All-New X-Men rises to the occasion to become Comic Book of the Week, but there are some nice moments in the new Avengers. Including one great one with Bruce Banner.

Indeed, now comes the punch and pie

Comic Reviews: All-New X-Men #3, Amazing Spider-Man #699, Avengers #1, Hawkeye #5 and Thunderbolts #1.

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 11/24/12

Holy mackerel, it’s a big week in comic books for me! I know I buy a lot of comics each week, but for some reason, a veritable ton of books were waiting for me in the comic shop. I’m lucky I managed to get through them all! I may have to start bleeding over some titles into the week after if I get anymore weeks like this. I’m only one man, after all. So what do we have in store for us this week? A nice smattering of DC and Marvel, with a few new Marvel NOW! starts, including The Indestructible Hulk, the title I was most looking forward to. Did it live up to the hype? Maybe. How about the big Amazing Spider-Man surprise? That definitely lived up to the hype.

But surprise, surprise, the Comic Book of the Week turned out to be Captain Marvel #7! I’m glad to see that title finally carrying its weight.

Captain Marvel fights the Iron Giant’s redneck cousin

Review: The Avengers

The Avengers was phenomenal. It was amazing. It was deliriously wicked. It was the perfect blend of mind-blowing action and heart-tugging giddiness. I could wear out the Thesaurus with the ways in which The Avengers movie lived up to everything I had hoped, and shined in ways I could not have imagined. We comic book geeks have been waiting for this movie our entire lives (and more specifically, since 2008), and Marvel Comics and director Joss Whedon have delivered a superhero extravaganza!

The new kings and queen of Hollywood

The Avengers is not only now the definitive superhero movie, it has raised the bar for all Hollywood blockbusters that will ever be made from this day forth.

Rating: 5/5: Great!

With The Avengers, this grand, long-gestating experiment by the Marvel movie people has come to glorious fruition. I always had faith that they could pull it off. Iron Man in 2008 was a brilliant film, and when Samuel L. Jackson appeared at the very end and teased ‘The Avengers Initiative’, I knew there was hope.  Then The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, all came along over the past few years, each one exciting and highly entertaining. I’m a fan of all of these films. But could Marvel really pull off The Avengers? Could they not only bring all of these major characters together into one film, but have it make sense and live up to the overwhelming hype?

I should be ashamed for even including those questions in my review. The answer is so incredibly ‘HELLS YES!!’ that I’m almost afraid of having my Internet License revoked.

Every Avenger gets a moment (or more) to shine. The humor is legitimately funny and delightful. The fights and action scenes are clear and exciting, with no blurring or over-editing. The Avengers are people first, action stars second; with a lot of character-based drama. Loki as the villain is far better here than he was in Thor, and easily carries the antagonist role. The climax was sufficiently chilling and climactic.

And the Hulk absolutely steals the show, smashing his way into our hearts. I could not be more pleased with this movie.

Some **SPOILERS** to follow.

A New Hawkeye Series for People Who Really Like Hawkeye

Personally, I’ve never cared for Hawkeye, so I doubt I’ll have any interest in this comic. But holy hot damn does it have some amazing covers!

I just love a stylish comic book cover

The new series was announced Saturday at C2E2, the comic book convention going on this weekend in Chicago. That cover, and it’s partner that I’ll post in a minute, are drawn by superstar artist David Aja. The comic is going to be a reteaming of Aja and writer Matt Fraction, who last collaborated on the incredible Iron Fist series from a few years ago. That comic was so good that it even got me interested in Iron Fist! And the Iron Fist covers were equally as awesome.

So this series is already building a lot of hype. It’s due out in August.

Wow those are awesome covers.

Anyway, a new Hawkeye series is a great idea from Marvel. Hawkeye is never going to be more exposed than when he appears in next month’s The Avengers movie. This will be the most high profile he has ever been. So capitalizing on that success with a new comic is a good idea.

On a personal note, I’m getting a good giggle from the very swift evolution of Hawkeye’s costume in the past year to coincide with the movie. Marvel has found themselves in a bit of a pickle, because the movie costume is based on the Ultimate Universe costume, but they can’t exactly have one of their normal universe characters just switch to an identical Ultimate costume.

This is Hawkeye’s classic costume:

All purples and blues, with a full face mask, loin cloth and other superhero tropes. He’s worn a variation of this costume since he debuted. It’s one of those classic costumes. But in anything other than comic books, it could look a little silly. So when Marvel put Hawkeye in The Ultimates, they gave him a much more realistic looking leather costume. As was the style in that book.

I’m a huge fan of The Ultimates, and of Ultimate Hawkeye’s costume. It’s a great look for the character, and is not adorned with all the silly purple decorations of the classic costume.

So it’s no surprise that when Marvel decided to add Hawkeye to The Avengers movie, they picked his sensible Ultimate costume over his flamboyant classic costume.

But then getting back to the topic of Hawkeye’s new high profile, Marvel has to capitalize. There has been no great proof that the movies actually get people to buy more comics, but there is always the chance that somebody is going to see the movie and then want to read more about Hawkeye. But when they go to the comic shop, as recent as last year they would see Hawkeye in his purple costume. Visual continuity is important. If the fan is looking on the shelves for movie Hawkeye, give them something similar. So in recent months, Marvel has given Hawkeye a new costume.

Though based on those new comic book covers, he might be reducing his costume to just a T-shirt soon enough. Still, it’s an awesome design that draws heavily from the Ultimate and movie versions, while retaining some of its classic roots. I’m definitely a fan of the new look. Real men wear purple.

So hopefully Hawkeye fans are excited at this news.
