Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 5/9/20

Would you like at that, we’ve got a normal comic book today! The news in the world is that comic books are going to come back towards the end of the month. Marvel and DC are making plans, releasing schedules and putting some comics digital-first. So we will have new comics again!

The return starts this week with a new issue of Grant Morrison’s The Green Lantern! Too bad it’s probably the weakest issue yet! Man, if this is what comics are going to be like coming back, we should be worried…

Happens to the best of us, Hal

Meanwhile, life goes on in quarantine. I’ve started walking, finally. I splurged on some LEGO, finally. I watched The Midnight Gospel, which was good. I didn’t realize when HBO’s free streaming would end, so I didn’t get to finish the first season of Succession. And I’ve been playing XCom 2, which is really fun! So at least I’m keeping busy.

The 6 Comics I Will Miss Most in Quarantine

As I write this, we don’t yet fully know what’s going to happen with new comic book releases during the coronavirus crisis. Diamond Distributors will not be distributing physical comics to stores anymore, and I believe both Marvel and DC have announced they will not be releasing their normal print comics digitally, though at least DC will continue to release their regular digital-first comics. Other studies, like BOOM! and IDW, have halted all production.

I’ll never forget you, Melody Guthrie

So if the comic book industry grinds to a halt and we don’t get any new comics for the foreseeable future, I thought now would be a good time to sit back and take stock of which comics I’m really enjoying right now, which comics are my favorite, and which I am really going to miss going forward. I don’t know what’s going to happen to my weekly review column if we don’t get any new comics. At least we’re all in this together.

Join me after the jump for the six ongoing comics I will really miss if the virus kills the comic book industry. And feel free to share your own favorites in the comments!

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/28/20

These might be my last batch of comic book reviews for the foreseeable future! Diamond Distributors announced this past week that they’re going to shop distributing comics to retailers, and we don’t yet know if any of the major publishers are going to go digital-only during this virus apocalypse. If they do, I’ll be fine, because I read all my comics digitally. But if Marvel, DC and the like shut down all releases…welp, that’s the whole ball game!

Perhaps I’ll start doing reviews of all the tpbs I’ve been catching up on…

Comic Book of the Week goes to the second issue of Force Works 2020 for being the most entertaining comic this week! A lot of comics were just moving the story along, whereas Force Works 2020 was really fun to read with some solid character work.

Shoot harder!

Meanwhile, speaking of those tpbs, I read through the entire collected edition of Nick Spencer’s Astonishing Ant-Man and it totally held up! Great series. I started on Dennis Hallum’s Cloak and Dagger, and the first tpb was good, solid. But I cannot recommend the latest tpb of Rat Queens, with a whole new creative team. That was a disappointment.

Let’s Brush Up Our Green Lantern Knowledge In These Trying Times

Noah Sterling has been knocking out awesome comic book summaries in his charming animation style for years now, and he just delivered one detailing the history of all the Earth Green Lanterns. It’s fun! And we could all use a bit of fun right now.

I, too, have been wondering what happened to Simon Baz. We haven’t seen him for years!

But I am enjoying Sojourner Mullein in Far Sector! A new issue came out this week and it’s good. Hopefully she gets a chance to really shine going forward.

Who’s your favorite Green Lantern?

Hench-Sized Comic Book Reviews – 3/14/20

How’s everybody holding up? Coronavirus has yet to hit my little enclave in Upstate New York, but it’s getting closer by the day. I hope all of you are safe, sound and doing your best to get through this!

Thankfully, I read my comics online these days, so no need to go outside! This was a stellar week, with quality issues of The Green Lantern, X-Men, New Mutants and the Comic Book of the Week: Ant-Man #3! This mini-series is just delightful!

Ant Man Avengers 01

Do none of the Avengers cook at home?

Meanwhile, I did get caught up on the first issue of Strange Adventures, so expect that review this week. And I just binged the third season of the Castlevania and it was phenomenal! So dark, so cool, so charming and so action-packed. This series is not one to miss!

Comic Reviews: Ant-Man #3, The Green Lantern #2, New Mutants #9, Strange Adventures #1, Thor #4 and X-Men #8.
